Europe » Italy » Tuscany » Lucca May 24th 2011

I hemmed and hawed quite a bit last night trying to make the decision as to whether I would go to Lucca or whether I would go back to the Cinque Terre area. It feels like there is some unfinished business there. There is also a part of me that needs to see it with a more positive eye. But in looking at the trains and such, it makes for a very long day (strike or no strike!) and I am leaving early in the morning and spending a good part of the day on the train tomorrow making my way to Naples. So Cinque Terre was unfortunately going to have to be for another time (if I am ever that lucky!!) If I had more time in Pisa, I would have done it in a ... read more

Europe » Italy » Liguria » Cinque Terre May 22nd 2011

I have been wanting to do the trek through the Cinque Terre for years ... ever since I saw Valerie Pringle Has Left the Building and she effortlessly goes from little village to little village without a hair out of place. Ahem ... great editing! I had originally wanted to do this excursion on the 23rd. When I was looking at the train situation, I was getting better options for today so I changed my plans. I wasn't super in the mood to be doing it a day earlier but better trains, better day. I rarely change my plans ... it's almost like a superstition and I should have listened to that little voice inside my head. Even why I got up this morning, it took me a while to get excited about heading out there. ... read more

Europe » Italy » Tuscany » Pisa May 21st 2011

This morning I said goodbye to Florence. The owner gave me a big hug and kiss on the cheek and said "when you come back to Florence, baby?" She has taken to calling me baby since about the first five minutes after meeting her. Come back ... I certainly hope so one day but I think that I will try to get through the rest of this trip first. Then I'll start thinking about the next one!! I of course took the train to Pisa and it is an easy one-hour ride. My hotel is just a short walk from there and I found it with no problems. My room was not ready when I arrived so the girl very innocently asked "can you go for walk and come back?" and then she whips out this ... read more

Europe » Italy » Tuscany » Florence May 20th 2011

You are wondering about that last one, aren't you? You'll see ... there's a logical explanation ... somewhat. The first stop of the day was the Basilica San Lorenzo. This was not originally on my list of things to visit specifically ... walking by it ... yes ... but not necessarily going in. The reason that it was added as a must-do was because of the Michelangelo - Architecto exhibit that I saw in Milan. He designed the adjoining Biblioteca, the facade and the new sacristy. I had actually walked by this church when I had popped into the Mercato Centrale and it had not jumped out at me. Turns out that the facade that Michelangelo designed was never built. What? I saw drawings upon drawings and multiple scale models and they never got around to ... read more

Yesterday I got to chat with my dad. With the time change, it is a little harder to actually get in touch with one another so I have been having daily chats with my mother mostly (who is retired and therefore at home in the middle of the day). I have actually spoken with my mother more during this trip than I think I do on a normal basis. It is definitely fun to be able to spin the computer around and have them see my room and the view first hand. Of course, I would prefer that they be here with me!! I have not really been feeling home sick but I am guessing that is because of Skype. I have always said though that I take everyone I know with me on these trips. ... read more

Europe » Italy » Tuscany » Florence May 18th 2011

The day started with my half-hearted attempt at seeing Michelangelo's David at the Gallery dell'Accademia. There is a part of me that wants to see the real thing but there is another part of me that doesn't care enough to want to go through the hassle of dealing with the tourists. Have I mentioned how crazy they are? Insane ... they are insane. So I went by the museum, I saw the lines and just kept on walking. I did not realize that Florence was a stop for many cruise ships so the numbers of groups seems to be just out of this world. And you can pick them out easily ... they all have numbered stickers on their chest and are following a lady holding up an umbrella (or a flower, a flag, a paddle ... read more

Europe » Italy » Tuscany » Florence May 17th 2011

This morning I said arrivederci to Bologna and buon giorno to Florence. I was a little concerned at the fact that my pace had definitely slowed down for the three days in Bologna. I was hoping that it was not the pace of travel that was catching up with me. I am only one-third through after all. I definitely have a few aches and pains ... my poor knee is bad after a couple of days of hard walking in Montreal ... so a month means that it is a little tender at best. My concerns were swept away the second that I reached Florence. Just like Venice, it is what I pictured it to be and I was so warmly welcomed at the Hotel Berna on top of it. This hotel is literally a few ... read more

Europe » Italy » Emilia-Romagna » Bologna May 16th 2011

I thought that I would just do one post for the three days that I just spent in Bologna. There is actually not all that much to do so three days was probably a bit of overkill. In the end, I still managed to fill my day and I certainly did not get bored. It also gave me time to just hang out in the park, read and give myself a much need pedicure/facial!! I also re-read the blog postings that I have done so far. I am starting to realize that I will clearly remember something but I can never seem to remember in what city I was in. It was to be expected I guess!! I arrived on Saturday the 14th and after checking in and unpacking made my way out the door. I ... read more

Europe » Italy » Veneto » Venice May 13th 2011

There was only one thing on my list of things to do today and that was to visit the neighbourhood around my hotel. My hotel room is practically on the water and the small streets around it are filled with fruit and fish vendors, botteguas, cafes and tons of people just milling about. There is such a great atmosphere! It is also in the Jewish quarter. I've visited a few Jewish quarters in different cities and I have always found it interesting so why would this be any different. So that led me to the Jewish Museum. I don't proclaim to know much about the Jewish faith so I do have to say that this museum definitely provided a great education. There were explanations of the major observances and included antique items that are used in ... read more

Europe » Italy » Veneto » Venice May 12th 2011

I am so glad that I decided on spending four days here in Venice. There is just so much to see! My first stop would be the Peggy Gugenheim Museum. Peggy Gugenheim came from a wealthy family (her father perished during the sinking of the Titanic) and she was a vervent art collector. An American, she eventually bought a home in Venice. This home was donated (as well as her vast collection of art pieces) so that a museum could be created. Her ashes are actually buried in the garden of the home as her dogs. There is a sign that says "here lies my beloved babies" which include Cappucino, Emily and Baby. There are photos of Peggy Gugenheim in her home surrounded by the artworks that are now displayed in the museum. There are original ... read more
