The weather in Barcelona has been spotty, at best. One minute it looks like it is going to rain (or it is raining slightly) and then the next it is bright sunshine. So I was happy to wake up to sunshine which in the end lasted for the better part of the day. I started the day with a walk to reach Park Guell. This is a park that was designed by Antoni Gaudi, the same architect of la Sagrada Familia and Casa Battlo which I visited yesterday. The fact that it was designed by him is unmistakable. The surrounding gate is curvy and wavy. There are two small houses (one which houses the gift shop) that look like two big gingerbread houses. You make your way up this grand staircase where you can find a ... read more

I actually arrived in Barcelona yesterday. By the time I got here, it was already mid-afternoon. I am staying in a serviced apartment so the room has a small kitchenette. The thought of actually cooking for myself was quite appealing. So I headed out to find a grocery store and just relaxed in for the rest of the day. It also gave me time to read up on Barcelona and figure out what I was going to do in the next couple of days. The first thing on the list was of course the Sagrada Familia. This spectacular church was designed by Antoni Gaudi. He died in 1926 after being run over by a tram at the age of 74. The construction was not complete then nor is it now. They estimate that there is still ... read more

I woke up this morning a little bit in disbelief. I only had one day left out of my four weeks in Italy. I still had a few things that I absolutely wanted to see so after a good breakfast I headed out. The first stop would be the Terme de Caracalla. I had passed by this sight last time I was here but had not gone in. We didn't really know what it was and so we just pretty much ignored it. Truth be told I had not done a lot of reading about Rome the first time I was here. In preparing for this trip, the idea of the Terme definitely piqued my interest. In essence, it was the sight of a leisure centre and it was a HUGE leisure centre. It took 9,000 ... read more

I started the day with taking the metro to the Spagna station to go see those famous Spanish Steps. I have said it before but there are some things that just leave me wondering why they are so popular. This is literally a set of stairs that lead to a church and at the bottom there is a fountain that is shaped like a small boat. I guess the attraction is the same as any piazza ... it is just a great meeting place to generally hang out and do some great people watching. It was relatively early so the crowds had not gathered yet but there were still some tourists looking at maps and guidebooks, locals reading books and newspapers and people climbing up the stairs to make their way to wherever they were going. ... read more

It is only now that I think back about what I did today that I realize that I must seem like I am totally obsessed over that book. Today I definitely hit a lot of the places that are mentioned in the book. To spare my poor feet, I took the subway to the Piazza del Popolo. I've mentioned my achy feet a few times now. It's not like I am limping around or anything. But it kind of feels like when you have worked out too much and are stiff the next day. My feet are outright stiff. In the morning, I can't even point them. Isn't getting older fun? In my defense, I have done ALOT of walking and ALOT of stair climbing. I have only used public transportation when I have had to ... read more

Today the focus was on those Roman ruins! I walked down Via Cavour and made my way towards the Colloseum. The tour groups were definitely out in full force early in the morning! So I continued on down to the Palatine ticket office. The entrance ticket gives you access to the Palatine, the Roman Forum and the Colloseum. You definitely cut down on the waiting time if you buy your ticket at the Palatine ticket office and then do the Colloseum later. I also invested in an audioguide which comes with a handy dandy map. So ticket and audioguide in hand, I set off to see some ruins. My visit started at the Roman Forum. It is really hard to fathom when looking at these ruins what the buildings must have actually looked like. You get ... read more

They say that throwing a penny in the Trevi Fountain will guarantee your return to Rome. It worked … I am back in Rome! It is bittersweet to be here though. I am so excited to be seeing it again (I was here just three years ago). Rome definitely holds a special place in my heart because it was the very first city I ever visited in Europe (mmmm … the travelling thing really took off after that little trip!). Bittersweet also because it is my last stop in Italy. After these five days, I am crossing over to Spain. It also means that I am about halfway through the journey but that I don’t even want to think about right now … So as I have been doing on days when I have travelled from ... read more

I had an amazing night of sleep (something like 10 hours) so I was more than ready to attack visiting Pompeii. This is something that I have wanted to do for a few years now … actually since visiting Rome three years ago and getting my first taste of these types of archeological sites. I took the subway to the train station and bought my ticket for the Circumvesuviana train (that name doesn’t really roll off my tongue if you must know …which is not practical when having to ask about it!). It was about a 40 minute ride but it essentially drops you off just a stone’s throw from the entrance of the archeological site. There were quite a number of people in line when I arrived but the line was moving swiftly. I also ... read more

Europe » Italy » Campania » Naples May 26th 2011

Like I mentioned yesterday, today was going to be just one of those days where I would wander around somewhat aimlessly. There were some things that I specifically wanted to see so there was some order to it but relatively little. But first breakfast … a hot pain au chocolat and homemade yoghurt … say it with me … yum!! So I walked out of the hotel … yep still chaotic even first thing in the morning on Via Pasquale Scura!! The fish vendor was out in full force … such a lovely smell first thing in the morning. I still have a little something though for my Marseille fish vendors!! My aimlessness took me down Via Toledo which is a large artery in the city and which eventually becomes a pedestrian street. That’s when the ... read more

Europe » Italy » Campania » Naples May 25th 2011

Getting to Naples was a train journey that took about 5 hours in all so needless to say that once I got here, I only managed to walk around a little. I had had a couple of people tell me that Naples wasn’t that pretty or that great of a city to visit. I had that in the back of my head when I came in but I didn’t want it to taint my perception of the city. I wanted to make my own opinion. Before I go on with the story of my arrival into Naples, let me say that one of the things when I travel (and especially because photography is a such a big part of my travelling) is that for me, I always try to find the city’s personality. There is always ... read more
