Arrived in the port around 8am and made my way over to my hostel just around the port. Met this Dutch guy who it turns out was on the same ferry as me last night and after talking for a bit decided to walk over to the Old Town together. Bout a 45 minute walk but was well worth it since most of it is along the shoreline which is spectacular. From above I could see all these little tucked away coves with people swimming and others laying out on the nearby rocks. Made a mental note to come back later. The old town is really as spectacular as I expected. I've wanted to come here a while and it did not disappoint. It's actually pretty small in scale and we were able to walk all ... read more

Europe » Italy » Campania » Naples August 4th 2010

Spent the late morning and early afternoon having a walk around town with a couple of the English guys in my room. Went and checked out some of the street art that is pretty common here and wandered around the side streets full of people selling fresh produce. Naples was definitely worth checking out but after a couple days I was ready to head out. Made it over to the main train station to book my tickets over to Bari where I would then catch a ferry over to Dubrovnik. Unfortunately the train I wanted from Caserta to Bari was full so I had to take the next one meaning I would not get into Bari until 1044 and with a ferry leaving at midnight I was a bit worried. For good reason too since it ... read more

Europe » Italy » Campania » Naples July 31st 2010

Today was my day dedicated to discovering the not so wonderful but certainly interesting city of Naples. Figured I would enjoy this more than a day trip out to Vesuvius or Pompeii. The receptionist at the hostel here hooked me up with a map and after drawing all over it I had a pretty good idea of what to check out and where to grab pizza. Something you have to do here as it supposedly was invented and perfected in Napoli. Really did enjoy walking around the historic centre here. The place is a bit run down but it's cool to see these tiny alleys with people selling all their goods and then right around the corner is a nice quaint church or an old decaying statue. It's crazy to walk around here since they have ... read more

Europe » Italy » Lazio » Rome July 29th 2010

Woke up just as Matteo was getting home from work again. This time he was dead tired so it was just Philip and I for the day. Both of us wanted to see the Vatican before he left Rome so we headed over there for the day. Your introduction to the place is St. Peters Square which is pretty mesmerizing. The scale of it alone makes you stop and stare. We had to give up on our plan to start with St. Peters Basilica as the line for it was massive. It even left the square. By the way, does that mean that it left the country back into Italy. Never seen a two country line before. We looked for other options but the Swiss guards had the place locked up pretty well. Matteo woke up both me and Philip (another CSer from Frankfurt) after returning from work around 8:30am today. Quickly got up and organized and hopped on the metro out to the beach. Bout an hours journey and still only a euro. Not bad. Have no idea how Matteo had the energy to do this after work but he seemed full of life ha. The beach was pretty nice. I of course did not go in the water. Just layed out, read, listened to music and enjoyed a few beers brought by the guys who wander the beach selling all types of junk. I love how they continue trying to pester you into buying cheap sun glasses when you have a pair on already. Was a nice relaxing day. Perfect for me and my sore feet after ... read more

Rome was not built in a day and you sure as hell cannot see it in one. I should know. I tried. Got up a little after 5:30 as the sun was rising so I would not be found in the park ha. Dropped my bag off in a locker in Roma Termini station and after grabbing a map set out to see as much of Rome as I could. Headed back up by Villa Borghese to the Piazza del Popolo and from there over to the Spanish Steps. I did not know this last night but the steps I watched the concert from were actually the Spanish Steps. To be honest they are kind of a disappointment. Would not really look twice if they did not have such a hype about them. They are nice ... read more

Europe » Italy » Tuscany » Pisa July 27th 2010

Took the train out to Pisa for the day as I really had nothing else to do here in Florence. I figured it would be worth it to see the tower even though I was set up for disappointment. I did not realize just how big Pisa was and it did appear that the town actually did have more to offer than the tower. The area along the river looked quite nice but I was in a bit of the hurry so I just sought out the tower. I turned the corner and saw it and could not help but say that damn thing does really lean. How has that not fallen over? I know the one side is weighed down now but still. It's pretty damn cool to see in person ha and I took ... read more

Europe » Italy » Tuscany » Siena July 27th 2010

Got up fairly early along with Pegah and Laura to make our day trip out to Siena, supposedly a smaller but equally as appealing city as Florence. We had planned to hop off the train on the way there in some tiny town to grab a traditional lunch. We decided to just pick a random number (2) and then get off the train after two more stops. Stop number 2 at that point ended up being Siena. FAIL. Probably worked out for the best though as Pegah had to head out fairly early to catch her train down to Sorrento. Wandered through the medieval streets for a little and ended up in the main square which I heard many considered the most beautiful in the world. Don't think I would go that far but it is ... read more

Europe » Italy » Tuscany » Florence July 27th 2010

Decided to spend my day revisiting some of the sites that we hit on the tour yesterday, just at my own pace. Returned first to the incredible Duomo. I really do admire the artwork put into the outer facade. One of the more beautiful churches I have seen this trip. The style of the nearby Baptistry and belltower are quite similar and are also quite a spectacle. Particularly the golden doors to the Baptistry which Michaelengelo said could be the doors to heaven themselves. Unfortunately, there were massive lines for these three things (like everything else in Florence this time of year) so I did not make it inside. Pretty high praise. Walked back over to the Uffizi which has a pretty cool setup. I did not go in as that would violate the rule I ... read more

Europe » Italy » Tuscany » Florence July 24th 2010

Got off my train at 6:18 this morning and within 10 minutes I was at the hostel putting my bag down for the day. Headed out the door to accomplish one of my goals for the trip. Walking around as the city is still waking up. Made my way south across the river to explore the less visited side of town. Just on time to see people opening up the gates on their stores and others setting up their market stalls. Was nice to be out and about before beating everyone else and the heat. Florence is just what you would expect. A beautiful mid-sized city where everything seems to have some historical importance and usually during the Renaissance times. Makes me want to explore more of the Tuscany region. Came back to the hostel in ... read more
