Europe » Belgium » Brussels-Capital Region » Brussels July 6th 2010

Got off to a pretty slow start today after a late night out. Took care of some CS stuff and took a little stroll around their neighborhood and around a nearby park. I saw this pretty cool castle looking building nestled into this neighborhood that looked kind of out of place there. So I asked my hosts what purpose that building serves and it's a prison! Only in a country like this would you see a beautiful hundred year old building being used to hold felons. Probably pretty nice digs. One of the things that's cool about Brussels is that it is a completely international city since as I mentioned before it is the home of the EU. I am not sure if this is true but someone told me that 60% of the people who ... read more

Europe » Belgium » Brussels-Capital Region » Brussels July 5th 2010

It's off to Brussels today. Caught the noon train and half an hour later I was in another country ready for the last stop on Part 1 of the vacation. Almost half way through it amazingly. Found my host's place with ease and soon we were getting acquainted. I am couch surfing here with a couple of American girls who are getting their masters degree here in Brussels. Both are students in International Relations and Brussels is kind of the perfect place for this as it is the home of the EU and subsequently a bunch of NGOs, think tanks and the like. There are really only two things in Brussels I wanted to see (Grand Place and Mannekin Pis) so I headed over to the centre city to do my touristy things for my trip ... read more

Europe » France » Lower Normandy » Bayeux July 5th 2010

So today was a day I had been pretty excited about for a while. Going on a tour of the D-Day beaches out in Normandy. For whatever reason I have kind of turned into a bit of a history buff/nerd on this subject and wanted to go out to the area to check it out and pay my respects at the American cemetary to all the soldiers we lost that day. Unfortunately it's a two hour train ride out to the town of Bayeux where the tour starts but it's a pretty nice ride. The countryside out in Normandy is beautiful and the architectural style reminds you of rural Britain for the obvious geographical reasons. I wish I could spend more than just an afternoon out here exploring some of the small towns. The tour consisted ... read more

Europe » France » Île-de-France » Paris July 1st 2010

So today was my day to do all the touristy stuff in Paris. Took the metro from the hotel down to Notre Dame and had a quick walk around there. I remember this place being much more impressive as a kid but I guess that is pretty normal. From the outside today though it really didn't look like anything special. I didn't get the chance to go in as the lines were massive. Unfortunately this would be a trend that would continue throughout the day. Took a nice leisurely stroll along the Seine over to the Eiffel Tower and grabbed a quick lunch at a Chinese place nearby. I know I should probably try something a little more French like crepes or whatever but I don't care. Chinese is never a bad option for me. After ... read more

Europe » France » Île-de-France » Paris June 30th 2010

I will try and make this one quick and painless since there is little to write about today. I did absolutely nothing of interest. I sent out a bunch of couch surfing messages for the next couple of weeks, looked at train schedules and most importantly to all my fans out there (no) I tried to catch up on the blog. I banged out about 5 today with more to come soon. So yeh all those blogs about Lyon and Interlaken where I write like it just happened that's not true at all. They were all written from a computer down in the lobby of our hotel here in Paris. Besides writing I worked out at the gym for likely the first and last time of this trip and cut my hair. God damn that felt ... read more

Europe » France » Paris June 30th 2010

Checked out of the place with the amazingly small beds today and made our way over to Gare Nord so we could throw our bags in the locker until we met my Dad at his hotel tonight. From there it was just a quick walk for Pat and I over to the Montmartre area. The area used to be a bohemian neighborhood but from what I can see it is just overrun by tourists now. It is most well known for the church that is perched up on a hill called Sacre Couer. The outer façade is quite nice but the interior is the same as everything else I have seen, blah. It’s worth the trip for the views of the city which are pretty amazing. Especially since there are no high rises in the downtown ... read more

Europe » France » Île-de-France » Paris June 29th 2010

Today I would have to reluctantly leave Switzerland. If I had known how much I would have enjoyed it I would have spent more than 3 nights here but it is time to move on. It also helps that I am pretty excited to meet up with Pat tonight in Paris. I got a little scare when I went to the train station in Interlaken this morning and asked to book tickets on to Paris. The woman working the counter then sternly informed me that this was the high season and often you have to book a week in advance but she would check for me just in case something was open. Yeh, something was open. The exact train I wanted departed right away. Not really sure what she was trying to do to me but ... read more

Europe » Switzerland » South-West » Lauterbrunnen June 29th 2010

Today's activity was going to be a little more traditional but a lot more strenuous. A group of us that included myself, Cody (San Fran) and Jake and Joe (the OC) were going to rent bikes and trek up to some of the mountains down in this nearby valley. Got up pretty early to get a head start on the day and rented bikes from this nearby pizzeria. Everybody in this town has some connections to the action/adventure sports. It took us about an hour and a half of mostly uphill biking to reach the town of Lauterbrunner which sits at the end of one valley and from there we took another half an hour to bike down through the valley to another small town on the end. I know this is getting redundant but the ... read more

Europe » Switzerland » South-West » Interlaken June 28th 2010

Got up today as early as I have had to in a while on account of the canyoning trip I was taking part of. The group of the 18 adventure-seekers met outside the hostel at 8:30 with one of the guides for the day before heading two doors down to where their company was located. They breezed through the rules for the day which mostly came back to “Don’t be an idiot since we cannot be responsible for all of you”. Sound advice. They hooked us up with a wetsuit, boots and a helmet for the trip and we piled into vans for the ride out to the canyon which took about 45 minutes. As expected, another beautiful ride. I should mention that we did the 8 hour trip as they offer 6 and 3 hour ... read more

Europe » Switzerland » South-West » Interlaken June 28th 2010

Started off my day with a nice run through Lyon with my host Michael. Got to see a little more of the city and the main park. I was pretty shocked to turn the corner on a path in the park and see a small free zoo right in the center there. Did a little run through there before heading back the way we came along the Rhone river. As I said in the blog before I wish I had more time to check out the city since I only saw a small part but I guess I cannot see everything this trip. Made it over to the station just in time to grab a quick lunch to eat on the train. The plan for the day is take the train to Geneva and find a ... read more
