Got up on time to do the 11am free walking tour of Berlin. Not exactly free since you are expected to tip your guide at the end but it is still well worth the money. These things are amazingly popular. At the meeting point for the tour by the Brandenburg Gate there were probably about 150 people or so waiting to go. They broke us down into groups of 25 and off we went. The tour lasted about 4 hours with a short break for lunch. It was well well worth it and quite informative. Only problem was it was about 98 degrees today so everyone was pretty baked out in the sun all day. Usually I hate listening to people drone on about history but pretty much everything we talked about happend in the last ... read more

Really not anything too exciting to write about today. I spent about 7 hours on a train going from Copenhagen to Berlin. That's the only problem with going to Denmark, especially Copenhagen, it is just sooo far out of the way. Still worth it though. Oh, I did enjoy how on my train from Copenhagen to Hamburg they loaded our entire train onto a ferry which took us across the Baltic Sea to a port in northern Germany. Just kind of came out of nowhere. I was reading my book when the conductor instructs everyone on board to exit the train for the next half hour. Caught me and some others off guard. Got to Berlin just in time for the World Cup final. Had my Sneijder jersey on and was ready to cheer on my ... read more

As usual, I went over to the train station a day before my departure date just to make sure I could get the train I wanted down to Berlin. It's also a good idea to do this since it can take about 30 minutes waiting in line to get the ticket so now I don't need to rush tomorrow. I should mention that my means of travel todays is Anders' second bike. It is rusty, rickety and has a seat much too high for me. If it was a car it would not pass inspection. But it's what I have and I am starting to come around on it. Even though I have to get off my bike at each traffic stop and hop back on as I cannot reach the ground with my feet. Oh ... read more

Started off the day by biking into town with Anders. I was fortunate enough to be able to use his spare bike. Even though his neighborhood appears so suburban it is only about a 10 minute ride into the city centre. We stopped at a little place in Christianshavn (fairly trendy neighborhood with a bunch of canals running through it) to rent a boat to go exploring. All they had available was this little rowboat which was designed to be operated by one person. We each tried taking turns getting it going but it was pretty pathetic. We were barely moving, much to the enjoyment of the people eating lunch on the waterfront cafes. We ended up each just grabbing an oar and then we began picking up speed. Took a nice tour around the neighborhood ... read more

The 15 hours on the train really only felt like a couple and after almost 12 hours of sleep I was ready to go. Made my way by metro out to my host's house and already things started to feel like Scandinavia. Everything was so clean, bike lanes everywhere, and sooo many blonde people ha. My favorite part is that people will wait for the green light to cross the street even if there is not a car in sight. Cute. Met my host Anders at his place and could tell my stay here would be good. Just a real friendly, kinda quirky guy with a good sense of humor. My favorite quote. "For years I have been working on becoming the perfect mix of badass and puppy dog for girls... Europe » Netherlands » North Holland » Amsterdam July 10th 2010

Set my new record of three runs in a row after completing another lap around Vondellpark, one of my new favorite places. Ended up walking around town with another American I have hung out with a bit in Amsterdam. The streets still needed a little work after the mess that was made last night celebrating, especially the field where everyone was. That looked like a war zone. Also, it seemed like everyone was a bit hungover as many stores did not open till around 11 or 12 which is pretty weird on a Tuesday. Besides the walk around town and an awesome meal at an Italian restaurant (gorgonzola lasagna for 5 euro, steal!) I did not do too much today. I finally decided it was time to start researching volunteer opportunities in South America so I ... read more

Started my day off with my second run in as many days (went last night as well). Not bad Matt. Figured I have one full day in Amsterdam so I'll see it the way the people do....on bike. Rented one for the afternoon and did a big lazy lap around the centre area. As popular as biking is here I think it may be just as confusing as driving a car here. Sure they have tons of bike lanes but some are one way, you got road lights just for bikes. It's pretty crazy. Plus there are so many of you it feels like an interstate at places. As I said before the downtown area really is beautiful and just so peaceful no matter how many people are walking around. You never really get the feeling ... read more

Made it into Amsterdam in the early afternoon today and without any hassle found my hostel. I thought this place would be out of the way and kind of lame since it was one of the few ones left with availability. However, it's right on the edge of the downtown area near the big park and the popular square with the famous Iamsterdam sculpture. This place is actually what I needed. Went out for a little walk just to grab some dinner and was just shocked by how many people are on bikes. It's insanity. And there is no discrimination. Every single type of person in the city uses them. Should just get rid of cars once and for all. Went to a Dutch food shop for dinner. I had to when I saw that they ... read more

Europe » Belgium » Brussels-Capital Region » Brussels July 7th 2010

HAPPY 4th of JULY! Big day for me over here. May be in Europe but that won't stop us from celebrating Independence Day. Today also happens to be what I would call the last part of the first part of my trip day-wise I am pretty much exactly halfway through. Hopefully it will be as enjoyable as the first part has been. Also a big day here since the Tour de France is coming through Belgium (who knew it left France?). So we all went out to a suburb in Belgium where the finish line was set up. It was a much larger event than we had realized. Thousands and thousands of people were there plus all the corportate reps and bike teams and all. The action consisted of us watching guys from the back row ... read more

Europe » Belgium » West Flanders » Bruges July 7th 2010

Bruges is a well preserved town up in Flanders that used to be much more prosperous than it is today and the place gives off that feel quite a good deal. Now it's really just a big tourist destination but as some might put it, the city absorbs it quite well which I agreed with. It kind of reminds of me of Amsterdam Lite (yeh, I am writing this four days late). There are a bunch of small canals that weave through the town with cafes, chocolate and waffle shops and fry stands all over the place. Spent my afternoon there just wandering around with nothing to see in particular yet enjoying everything I saw. I also wanted to make a point of eating all the stuff they say you should eat in Belgium even if ... read more
