It is the weekend. I'm at the Cafe Maria near the CCS house to use the internet, because the WIFI in the house cuts off uncermoniously at 7 AM sharp. The CCS house has internet connections from 5 PM all night until 7 AM. This is so the volunteers have some time free if internet connections to make person-to-person connections. I will meet my friend for lunch. He as promised wonderful sea food. Yummmmy. A new volunteer arrived from Japan this morning. Most of the volunteers are away for the weekend. I showed the new volunteer the Cafe Maria so he could contact his family in Japan and let them know that he arrived safely. The Ely Lilly company sends its staff to volunteer for two weeks in Peru. It seems to be a great morale ... read more

I came to the Cross Cultural Solutions “Home Base” about 11 AM where I met my fellow volunteers and was shown to my private room with a private bath with are unusual since most times volunteers stay in group rooms. I will spend two weeks living here and working in Villa El Salvador which in a neighborhood of Lima. I’m the old guy since most of the volunteers are in their late teens or twenties. There was no WIFI on Sunday evening so instead the volunteers gathered in the living room area to play get acquainted games which was a great way to learn to know each other.... read more

The big day—the trip to Machu Picchu has been my dream. The guide came at 5:40 AM right on schedule to take me to a van which drive me to the train station to catch the “Vistadome” train at Poroy near Cusco. The three hour train ride allowed me to catch up on sleep and enjoy the breakfast spread on fabric Inca print table cloths. At Aguas Calientes the guide asked me to wait, but was frustrated because my time was so short. We finally went to the bus and took the ride to the top around many hairpin curves. The walk up to the “Facebook” vista, as the guide called it, ended where we could see the famous sight of Machu Picchu spread below us. I broke away from the group, even though the guide ... read more

The Del Prado Inn in Cusco has pretentions to be a four star hotel with the great breakfast they had for the guest; but, unfortunately the thumping music from the disco next door that begins at 11 PM every night will keep the best guests from coming back. The first clue was the earplugs on the nightstand next to the bed. The guide showed up right on time to take me to the bus to tour the Sacred Valley. The stop at the Indian market at Pisaq gave us time to shop. The huge buffet spread for lunch was at the Tunupa Restaurant gave us time to refuel for the upcoming climb at Ollantaytambo Fortress. In that climb I couldn’t keep up with the group, but the climb was worth it. The side facing the Ollanta ... read more

I’m taking medication to help with altitude sickness. I arrived in Cusco and felt breathless at times but not sick. The guide was at the airport waiting with a sign for me and that was the way it was for the whole trip. A guide showed up at every point to show me what to do and explain the sights or tell about where to go. It was impressive. It is a good system with different people at each place, but they were dependable and always there. From the airport the driver took me to the hotel while the guide explained every step in the itinerary and made sure that I understood everything. I had some time to rest before the city tour of Cusco. The first stop on the tour was the Cathedral of Cusco. ... read more

I arrived in Lima at 4:15 AM. The taxi driver with the sign for the Hostel El Patio was no where to be seen. When Luis, the driver, arrived he explained to me about time in Latin countries. I have to keep this in mind to relax and enjoy the time whatever I’m doing. My room was not ready, of course, at 5:30 AM. I got to hang out and enjoy the charming hotel. When I come into the room I found it even more charming with my private patio open to the sky. I went to buy the SIM card (‘Chip’ it’s called here.) for my phone. They are not expensive--$ 6 buys the ‘chip’ and the quite a few minutes on the phone. I’m fortunate to have Humberto, a friend I know from when ... read more
