I woke up quite late this morning, so I couldn’t make the trip to Tomar. Plus, I didn’t want to get stuck there since buses don’t run very often on the weekends. Instead, I decided to take a relaxing day and just explore Fatima. So I took my time getting ready. Once I was done, I headed towards the cathedral. Fatima is very well known for people seeing an apparition of Mary. On May 13, 1917, three children saw it. No one believed them; in fact, they told them that they needed to be punished for it. A little while later, 60,000 people saw the apparition. It appeared every month on the 13th and ended in October. Every month on the 13th between the months of May to October, people come from all over to see ... read more

Today I woke up with the uncertainty of where I would go. I really didn’t want to go to Coimbra, so I chose to make the complicated trip to Obidos. Obidos is a small medieval town surrounding by a wall/fort. After I ate a quick breakfast of crackers, I made my way to the bus station. I found out that Fatima does not have a bus go directly to Obidos, so I would have to go to Lisbon and then Obidos. I bought a ticket for the 10:30 bus to Lisbon. It was 10:25 when I bought my ticket, so I hurried and tried to find the bus. Since the bus station is so small, I was able to find it easily. I spent the 90 minute drive relaxing and writing, making the time go by ... read more

I woke up early this morning so I could get to the bus station by ten. I packed all of my things and walked to the nearest bus stop. I lugged my suitcase about a mile, and quickly jumped on the bus that was already leaving. Once I got to the main bus station, I waited for my 7 hour ride to Portugal. A bus came up that was going to Lisbon, so I grabbed my stuff and tried to get on it. The guy informed me that it wasn’t the right bus. So I nervously waited. Finally, the right bus came up; I put my luggage in the bottom, and got on board. At our first stop, I really had to go to the bathroom. I didn’t want to get off and then have the ... read more

I woke up this morning, ready to seize the day. I was getting hungry so I decided to go and find a little bakery and get a pastry for breakfast. As soon as I stepped outside, I realized it was raining. Little did I know that it would rain all day. So I roamed around until I found a little bakery to get breakfast. I grabbed my elephant ear pastry and started to walk around the city. I walked around for a while until I decided to go inside the big main cathedral. I made my way inside to see high ceilings, altars made of gold, and rooms dedicated to saints. It was very beautiful, but it made me think. They had a little room set aside to Jesus, but the rest of the rooms and ... read more

I got up a little bit earlier today so I could make my way to Santiago. I packed the rest of my things up, and walked around for ten minutes trying to find the elevator. Finally, I found it and took my luggage down to check out. I wasn’t quite sure on how to check out so I just went to the front desk and gave the guy there my key. He smiled and said thank you, so I said thank you back and walked out into the pouring rain. Of course, it chose the day that I have to walk a mile uphill carrying my suitcase to rain. Yet when I stepped outside, it stopped raining. Just a little reminder that God has my back. I made my way to the train station to find ... read more

I woke up around the same today little bit earlier this morning so I could head to the supermarket. I bought some bread, meat, fruits, water, doughnuts, and Ziploc bags to last me until tomorrow. I carried my groceries back to the hostel and ate my delicious doughnuts for breakfast. I decided to go see what was happening around town, so I climbed back up the hill and made my way to the wall. I explored the parts of the city that I did not get to see yesterday. I went inside all the tourist places yesterday, so today I decided to check out some shops. After I was done walking around, I went back to the hostel and ate a sandwich for my late lunch. After lunch I decided to go buy my bus ticket ... read more

I slept in today, waking up around 10. After I got ready, I went to go find somewhere to eat breakfast. I walked through the wall into the city until I found a bakery named Don Leon. I found a delicious pastry that look like an elephant ear covered in chocolate, called a palmera. I took it on the go, deciding to try to find out how to walk on top of the wall. I found a map, deciphered were the stairs were, and went up them. I got to walk around the entire wall seeing the city. It was pretty awesome and reminded me of another walled city in Italy named Lucca. Inside the city there are some beautiful old roman buildings, but a lot of the buildings look old and run down. The city ... read more

After getting to sleep last night around 1:30, I woke up at 6 this morning to catch the bus at 6:30. Of course this was not enough time to get everything ready and walk down to the bus stop; I was just too tired to get up any earlier. I basically ran the whole way to the bus stop, about a mile, dragging my now way heavier luggage, worried that I would miss my bus. When I got there, I pleasingly saw no bus but all of the people in my group waiting. The bus came as soon as I arrived, and we packed our bags ready to go. Twenty minutes passed by and we were still waiting. I was really anxious and ready to go because I had to take three different metro lines to ... read more

Europe » Spain » Castile & León » Salamanca May 24th 2013

After breakfast this morning, I made my way to my last Spanish classed at Mester. I have had so much fun in my classes, that I am really sad about ending them. Although I did find out that I passed my exam today with a 90. After class, we went home to eat lunch with our host families for the last time. I took some time to pack up all of my things, pick up some last minute things, and look over how to get to the next city. We had a farewell dinner tonight with the headmaster at a nice place called Vida & Comida. It is a nice restaurant located outside of the plaza major. They fed us 6 courses, starting with ensalada primavera. It was full of fruits like strawberries, apples, and pineapple, ... read more

After our classes today we had our exam. It was very easy, except for the part where I had to write a birthday invitation in Spanish. Apparently, at my birthday party we will be having Paella and water to drink. No birthday cake or soda. After our exam we went home for lunch. I got to eat with the French boys. I asked them what their names were in Spanish and they just answered no. Apparently, they don’t have names. My siesta time was cut short today because we ended up going to a museum. It was a very beautiful exam that I unfortunately could not understand anything about it. Our tour guide spoke Spanish, so we all just nodded and acted like we knew what she was talking about. I did pick up that a ... read more
