The white cathedral.I woke up quite late this morning, so I couldn’t make the trip to Tomar. Plus, I didn’t want to get stuck there since buses don’t run very often on the weekends. Instead, I decided to take a relaxing day and just explore Fatima. So I took my time getting ready. Once I was done, I headed towards the cathedral. Fatima is very well known for people seeing an apparition of Mary. On May 13, 1917, three children saw it. No one believed them; in fact, they told them that they needed to be punished for it. A little while later, 60,000 people saw the apparition. It appeared every month on the 13
th and ended in October. Every month on the 13
th between the months of May to October, people come from all over to see the apparition of Mary. It is said that Mary told the children three prophecies. The first was about hell, the second about the second World War, and the third about the attempted assignation of the Pope. So Fatima has become a huge tourist spot on the 13
th of the summer months. A cathedral was built because of these things, and sits near the spot where
Cool religious artwork.the apparition can be seen. It is completely white, tall, and beautiful. The inside was dedicated mainly to Jesus and Mary, with murals on the outside of the crucifixion. I actually was very delighted to see more of God in the church. I took some time roaming around and looking at all of the religious souvenirs. I had never thought about buying a rosary until I came to a shop and asked about the small bracelets they sold. They eagerly helped me, saying everything was 20 percent off. If the bracelet has 10 beads, or maybe 9, you can pray with it. If it has less, you cannot. I just thought they were pretty bracelets. I looked at the rosaries, and they started showing me all of them. I looked at them, contemplating whether they would be good gifts or not, when they brought out a very special one. It was beautiful and smelled like roses. The lady told me that three sisters who live in a nunnery, made the rosary. The beads were made out of roses, and the smell would never go away. They told me that Fatima’s symbol was a rose as well as Mary. I don’t
My delicious food.really remember how the rose and Mary correlate, but I guess it is Mary’s thing. I’ll have to look it up again, but it had so much significance, that I bought two. One for me, and one for my friend. As I continued shopping, I found out, that cork is a huge typical product from Portugal. I found a ton of earrings, bracelets, and purses made out of it. They all seem pretty cool. After I was done with the church, I made my way around the city, looking at all the stores. When I was done, I made my way back to the hotel and relaxed. Tomorrow I shall be heading to Lisbon! I’m stoked!
