Hilary and Jane

To celebrate 10 years together, Hilary and Jane are off on their great OE. We leave glorious autumn weather in Auckland on May 13, heading via Sydney and Jo'burg to Cape Town, where we spend our first week before jetting to Nairobi to join a tour of the Serengeti and Ngorogoro Crater ...

Hopefully this at least restores the photos.... read more

Yes, we made it to Quito after three glorious weeks in Peru (Lima, Pisco, Nazca, Arequipa, Colca Canyon, Cuzco, Inca Trail (phew!) and Machu Picchu, where we were the first to enter the city after it being declared the 4th wonder of the world). With over two thousand more photos to sort through, it being 10pm, and leaving for the Galapagos Islands at 6am tomorrow, guess what .... we're not putting any more on the blog just now. Life's a gas, the world is a great place ... talk to you soon .... Lots of love to you all.... read more

Our transition from the US back to the 3rd world has been interrupted by two events ... a 6-hour stopover in Miami (nice and spacious) and, in my desire to lighten my load, my tossing my laptop from great height onto a concrete floor. I now have to keep my hand firmly pressed on the space just above the keyboard in order to use it. Jane also tells me that our flight into Quito gets in about an hour after our connecting flight to Lima. And our hotel in Lima has no record of our accommodation booking or our airport-to-hotel transfer. Well, wherever we go, there we are! We are, of course, having a fabulous time, and have been blessed to spend time with family in London, family in Boston, family in Kennebunkport, Maine, and ... read more

Catch-up photos from our East Africa Safari North America » United States » New York By WillzJune 15th 2007Kenya SafariHilary and JaneThis is a catch-up entry. We are at Jane's brother's house in Ossining, New York, having spent time in London, and in Kennebunkport, Maine, with Jane's father. We leave for Lima, Peru, next Wednesday. This entry is simply to add a few more images from our safari in Kenya and Tanzania -- mainly because I'm missing the raw beauty of the Masai, the Masai Mara, and the Serengeti. How do I distill over 2,000 photos into just a few that might b... read more

The sound of angels singing drew me closer, the high notes and harmonies expanding around me until my whole body was filled with this exquisite song of praise. I have always felt tearful in churches. Today, we by chance (is there such a thing?) wandered away from the busy South Bank of London (where we rode the London Eye and were dwarfed by the Tate Modern), across the Millenium Bridge, and into St. Paul’s - a glorious Anglican cathedral with stained glass, candelabras, ornate ceilings, and the welcome peace that comes when all present agree to take a moment to worship, celebrate, or honour their god. My heart fills with gratitude. I feel blessed. I am soothed and enjoy giving thanks to the many faces of God - and all that is. Hilary and I ... read more

Knysna We had made our way through this town of holidaymakers, industry, new subdivisions, and luxury estates, sea- and lake-view estates, multimillion-dollar waterfront apartments, huge mansions side by side, crammed in for a piece of the view of the sea and mountains. I couldn’t breathe. We were headed for the indigenous forest with a longing to walk and be nourished by nature. To be in the calm and peace. We turned up toward the mountain, at once noticing the absence of signs and fences. No barbed wire o high gates with cameras and imposing entranceways. None of that, but instead, wooden and tin shacks leaning at impossible angles, patched together with varying bits of wood, sticks, and an occasional old door or salvaged window. Pigs and cows grazing amongst the children, playing and laughing, and ... read more

Zane and the Penguins He sidled up to us as we peered through the wire netting at a couple of sleepy-eyed “Jackass” penguins, more properly known as African Penguins. Their nickname is evidenced by the wild honking and braying that erupts from time to time as the next team arrives home from a day’s fishing and each male attempts to shack up with the wrong missus. Just as he opened his mouth to tell us about the penguins, a canon fired from a naval vessel docked a short ways north at Simonstown, its boom echoing around the mountains. Zane and a couple of fluffy penguins, swished under their mum, winced and took a moment to recover. When Zane did recover, though, the torrent of information that poured from him, punctuated only by the repeated boom ... read more

It’s 2am, and Hilary keeps turning the air conditioning up (or is it down?)… so he can try on his new lightweight thermalater chillfactor coat. We did a city tour in the rain on the open deck of a double decker bus. Very cold here. Winter has just hit. Cape Town is a glorious city, nestled between mountain ranges and stormy seas, where more than four hundred ship wrecks lie waiting for some brave souls to discover them. Great swimming apparently, as an Antarctic current, 9 degrees Celsius, runs through these waters. We were very touched by the story of District 6 and will be visiting the Distric 6 museum tomorrow. The people here are very friendly and relaxed, similar to N.Z. Still feeling disoriented and spaced out by all the travel and sooo happy ... read more
