The body clock is still not adjusted and although the alarm is set for 5.15am to give enough time to shower and prepare for a taxi to the airport and out 9am flight to Rome, we still woke at 3.15am,again !Perhaps tonight we will sleep all the way through to a more normal hour. We had been pretty efficient last night and the suitcases were packed and today’s clothes laid out. Still haven’t worked out the shower water from flooding back but what the heck it’s our last shower and we will leave them to mop up any surplus that doesn’t drain back down the grate. Friday is holy day in Dubai and so the streets were relatively quiet and our ex-Pakistani taxi driver, who had a remarkable side profile to Daniel Craig the current James ... read more

We thought we had the overflow from the shower worked out by slowing down the supply of water by just having the taps half turned on.But to no avail although it did take a little longer before the flowback started and then there was nothing stopping it. As our body clocks still had not adjusted we were awake very early again so headed down to a supermarket a few doors down the road to but supplies for breakfast. For around NZ$6 total we fed ourselves with juice, yogurt, cornflakes, orange and banana plus a pastry.Even MacDonalds couldn't rival that ! We headed out to find the souks or marketplaces and took a ride across 'the creek' on a ferry. The Creek is not a river but just a stretch of water that appears about 5 km inland and is treated a ... read more

We counted at least 16 nationalities amongst the cabin crew that joined the flight out of Sydney and they got down to business quickly once the plane had levelled out.By the time Broken Hill was below us they were serving another dinner. We thought about whether we should be eating two dinners in one night and then decided, yes,as it looked like it would be a while to breakfast with the 14 and a bit hour flight ahead of us. The offering was different from the first dinner and again tasty. This new crew though were no different to the first and the offer of drinks came well after we had eaten. To be fair though we didn't need to participate in wine after midnight and settled for a juice instead. Our surrounding passengers had changed in nationality too with ... read more

Unfinished Business, Family Time and the A380 When the travel bug bites it is hard to resist and since the BBA V1 4 years ago there has been a yearning that we had to complete unfinished business. Even with over 8 months of travel and over 90,000km last time we still didn’t see all and do all we wanted to in Europe. So the flame flickered n when we returned to NZ in late 2009 and we got ourselves back into work and saving hard. Mind you we also had a wedding to save for with daughter # 2 engaged to marry Brent in January of this year. With the planning for that occasion done we were ready to concentrate on the BBA V2 and in November 2012 it became a reality when we made the ... read more

We have come to the final day of what will have been 223 days on the road by the time we get back to New Zealand on Saturday. And we are getting to spend it in Paris!! The day has dawned with high cloud and even a hint of watery sunshine although that doesn’t last long. The air temperature is cold and in single figures and the prospects for the day is for light rain to eventually arrive late morning. So our plan today is to do a couple of the outdoor things still on our list first before the weather turns on us and then head indoors to the Louvre. After yesterdays success in getting around on the Metro and saving our legs,Gretchen has planned a similar exercise for today with a short train ride to the ... read more

Things are all back to normal in the hotel at least from a hot water in our room to be able to shower and get ready for another day of sightseeing. Tour director,Gretchen, has day two planned with more top attractions to see all to be connected by rides on the Metro.Paris is proving to be a little bigger to get around over the three days that we have and the best option for today and tomorrow is to use the Metro. It may mean we miss some places we would have passed had we been walking a bit more but we just have to accept that and pick up on those when we come back to Paris again. We are out of the hotel door 45 minutes earlier than yesterday and across the road to the Gare ... read more

Today has not started out well. We have no hot water in our room to shower!!!This is only the second occasion on our adventure that we haven’t been able to have a hot shower in the morning because of a lack of hot water. The other time was in Mykonos in the Greek Islands. As each of the guests came down to breakfast they went and told the guy on the reception desk about their inability to have a hot shower and he must have been ready to yell at someone as his ability to deal with the situation was not good. With all the different nationalities staying here using English to tell him we thought he might have suddenly forgotten how to understand and speak English. Breakfast was basic but adequate and we hope it has set ... read more

Europe » France » Île-de-France » Paris November 22nd 2009

It’s a strange life!! For the past few weeks after daylight saving finished in Europe we had been waking in the morning quite late, sometimes not until 8am even.Yet this morning, without a car for the first time in months to get to our next destination,we are awake at 5.30am!!!And all this because we had programmed out minds to think that we must be awake so we can get prepared and over to the station so we don’t miss our train to Paris at 9.30am, four hours away!! We did manage to get some further shuteye before we got serious about rising at 7am. With all but the barest supplies of a couple of pieces of fruit, yogurt, toast and butter our breakfast will be of the ‘express’type this morning. Getting down the 4 flights of winding, narrow steps with ... read more

Europe » France » Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur » Marseille November 21st 2009

It has been a warm night in our Première Classe room and Gretchen heard the neighbours talking for a good part of the night. This morning has dawned a bit overcast but we are still avoiding the rain and the forecast for the day is good in Marseille which is our destination by the end of the day.In fact we will be less than 3 hours on the road if all goes according to plan. The cleaners started early this morning at the hotel and they look to be waiting for us to depart so they can give the room the 5 minute clean that they spent on the rooms vacant already. It may have been the best thing that the hotel in Marseille wanted to take the microwave and toaster off our hands as we ... read more
