The day in Pendleton dawned bright and sunny andthe Super 8 motel had a hearty breakfast waiting for us.We met a woman who had cruised into Tauranga last October and then talked with a woman from Denver about wonderful NZ was.Makes you feel very proud to be a Kiwi so far from home in Eastern Oregon!!! First stop for the day was an Indian reservation down the road on I 84.The Indians have got it right running the casionos and making their money work for them. There was an interesting museum and for an hour learnt about their history from before the white man came until today. Then it was on up I 84 to a spectacular vantage point that overlooked the massive valley Pendleton sat in.The car climbs the grades so well and manitaining 65mph was no ... read more

Another beautifully fine morning and a hearty breakfast that included waffles and we were on the road again.I seemed to have picked up a mild sore throat and runny nose so hope it doesnt develop. We found the old highway easily and started off climbing high above the mighty Columbia River to the first lookout point. From there the size of the river was apparent. It dwarfs anything in NZ. Another viewpoint a couple of miles on at Vista Point gave great views both up and down the river. We stopped at three waterfalls that had short walks to get to them including the appropriately named Bridal Veil Falls. The light thru the trees was beautiful and as the road was quiet with traffic it made the drive very restful.Down below near the river I-84 buzzed with traffic speeding by ... read more

A great nights value at the Old Town Inn Florence and a good nights sleep to go with it. There were plenty of stops on the way up 101 today with the first being at the Oregon Sand Dunes just out of town.Gretchen started the route march up the dunes then at the top decided that she needed to dip her toes in the North Pacific ocean. It was only a dip as the water temp is so cold. There was absolutely no one else on the beach in either direction which I guess shows just how few people live in this part of USA. Then it was onto the BIGGEST sea cave in the world. The sea lions that usually frequent the cave were sunning themselves on roks adjacent to the cave and only viewable from a platform ... read more

The third day of our roadtrip dawned fine and sunny again and the wind of Sunday was not present. The motel in Crescent City as just passable, not flash but el cheapo!! We headed north on 101 but had only travelled a couple of blocks and a warning bell sounded in the car and a light came on the dashboard. We didnt know where the next Dollar Renta Car would be and as it is a public holiday we didnt expect the Dodge dealer,if there was one in Crescent City,to be open to tell us it all meant. So Gretchen phoned the 0800 number on the rebtal agreement and hey presto the answer was low tire pressure. So into a gas station and air in all four tires even though we had no idea how much each tire should have as ... read more

Well wonders will never cease...Crescent City is in the directory!! The day started out well after a good nights sleep at the Quality Inn,Ukiah.Breakfast was good and chatted to a couple from Pacifica near San Francisco who had immigated (some timeago by their accent)from the Phillipines. Its always good to pass the time with locals as you get so many different views of this huge country.Must be the circles we mix in or places we stay but we always seem to meet Democrats and in fact can't remember the last Republican we spoke to. We headed north on 101 with very light traffic.I tried the overdrive again which I have found is great while the drive is flat but it gets a bit unerving when you travel uphill and the car never loses speed. There is always the ... read more

After a great nights sleep even though we only had 1 pillow each(shows how tired we were) we woke fit and fresh ready for a great Hojo breakfast.Well it wasnt too bad and we bulked up ready for the first day on the road.Trip to the car rental building was easy with the shuttle back to the airport and then a driverless train to the building where all the car companies were. Here we met Joyce who had a badge that said "çustömers make me smile".She was obviously on commission cos even though our prepaid had everything she still tried to upsell. She said the car we had rented would be too small for the freewys and didnt really have an answer when Gretchen said but we are taking backroads. She was stumped. She couldnt even sell us a ... read more

This could have been us yelling out from down the back of the Air NZ 777 flight 008 bound for SanFrancisco as we bumped our way up the South Pacific to the equator. Things looked promising for an upgrade in the departure lounge when Gretchen was asked to step to one side after her boarding pass threw up a red light.A couple before us were upgraded to something flasher than cattle class and we thought öh boy this will be good".However it was not to be.Just the video in the back of the allocated seat was not working and we would be moved to a couple of spare seats.Only they were about as far down the back of the 777 that you can get.Hence when the plane experienced turbulence for what seemed like a couple of ... read more
