Its time to move on from Pula and today we had just a short run around the bottom of the peninsula and up the east coast to near Rijeka. Iva called around to collect the keys and we thanked her for the great stay and time we had had in her apartment. We have a good half hour chat about everything from the Croatian economy and its prospects under the EU umbrella to how come we were able to be away from work, family and home for so long. She gave us a selection of cakes to take with us as a present for coming to stay. We are heading for accommodation in a mobile home in what we understand will be a camping ground at Medjeva,a small settlement just short of Lovran. So as we were unsure of what ... read more

It was our third and last day in Pula and it really has been an excellent stopover for us. The apartment has been great with plenty of room to spread ourselves out and has everything that we could have wanted in facilities including a washing machine. So for the first time on the adventure we were able to wash clothes in a washing machine rather than by hand. It was a bit like being Bear Grylls on the Discovery channel finding his way out at the end of the programme and the excitement of being rescued except for us it was the luxury of a washing machine which at home we take for granted. Nearly 3 hours after putting the clothes in the machine they were ready to hang out (these front loaders are so s ... read more

Today’s gelato flavour of the day – GMB- Coconut and GLB-Tiramasu The weather prospects for the day looked OK so we have decided to take the road north to two other ancient Roam towns on the west coast of the Istrian Peninsula. Rather than take the motorway and pay tolls again we opted for the SS3 which was the old main road to get to Pula from the Slovenian border and virtually ran parallel with the toll road. As expected the road width was much narrower and it was just the one lane in each direction. We had recalled from our last time in Croatia our near miss with a bus on the road around the coast to Rijeka and how the locals seemed to drive rather crazily. However things might have changed as we found ... read more

Gelato flours of the day - GMB - Nutella GLB - ......wait for it....chocolate! We feel very comfortable in our apartment and we can feel that it is going to be a relaxing 4 days here. Being Sunday we weren't too quick in getting up and as we plan a day around the town of Pula it didn't matter too much. Iva had told us where the local 'green market' and the supermarket was so we thought we would top up with some local fruit and veges and see if the supermarket had anything we fancied for dinner. Supposedly the markets were about 300 metres away and they were, except we somehow managed to walk past them and it was only when we were doubling back after going about a kilometre that we found them next ... read more

Gelato flavour of the day - GMB - Kiwi (a taste of home) The hotel for the night was situated in a small town about 11km from Pardeone and when we arrived we were the only names the woman on the front desk had on her list so we weren't surprised when we were the only ones at breakfast. There had been a short but loud thunderstorm last night as we went to bed and it had done the trick by clearing the air with the morning dawning fine and clear, well as clear as we have seen in the European smog which is more evident in the northern parts of Italy. The small town was more like a place you might come across in England than in Italy with tidy wide streets and properties lined with ... read more

The rain of last night has cleared the skies for today and we woke to bright sunshine giving a different look to the mountain tops except for a little bit of cloud that looked like it would clear soon. We have really enjoyed our 3 nights in this very well presented apartment and it would have been good to spend another day or two here but Croatia beckons tomorrow and we need to get ourselves part way there by driving back to a location on the plains. We said goodbye to our hostess who owned the building the 4 apartments were sited in.We said we would recommend her apartments to anyone from NZ who think of coming this way.She struggled with our English when we had arrived getting her daughter to translate and leaving was no ... read more

The sun takes a while to pierce the valley as the mountain sides are so steep but when it arrived it had a pleasant warmth to it and you could almost see the spring flowers and leaves growing. While we were walking up to the church yesterday we spied what we thought looked like a road through the forest of pines on the other side of the valley. It appeared to head up towards the end of the valley from where we hope to get an even better view of the big mountain that dominates that end of the valley. If there is a track or road that leads us home by a different route then that would complete a good circuit. We haven't skimped on breakfast recently and it has set us up well for the day ... read more

Missing our daily gelatos but there is nothing we can do as there are no stores selling them here! We both woke this morning short of breath and we can only put it down to the altitude of about 1400 mtrs above sea level we are at.Hopefully that won't put us off some walks we have got planned for the next couple of days. When we arrived yesterday the temperature was cold and it is easy to see why spring is only just coming to the area with the flowering trees yet to break their buds and green leaves only just starting to show. However in contrast the grass on the mountainside around the houses is green, very green almost as if the grass has said 'right, now the snow cover has gone I am really going to do ... read more

We just love boiled eggs for breakfast and we indulged again this morning before packing up and heading off for the mountains close to the Austrian border. Not that we should be without a facility to cook eggs anyway we want as our next stop is in an apartment with cooking facilities for 3 nights. We had the feeling that the holiday season is starting to show signs of being near as the guest numbers in the Hotel Germania along with the school party was higher than we have had in other places we have stayed. But it is time to leave the thousands of umbrella stands and deck chairs to the incoming throngs and head off for more remote places at least for a few days. Vicky had worked out a route that was certainly shorter in ... read more

Todays gelato flavours - GMB -Melon and GLB - good old chocolate The day dawned a bit drizzly and we were hoping it was going to clear as we have activity planned for the outdoors and wearing raincoats is not in the equation. Breakfast at the Hotel Germania was excellent with the chance to have a boiled egg.....oh how we have missed our morning egg.And we could make toast to go with it with nice soft bread. The ferry service out of Venice terminates at a town 18km from where we are at Lido di Jesolo down the peninsula that sticks out and protects Venice from the open sea and essentially creates a lagoon in which there are several islands which you can travel to by a ferry. It was clear,as we travelled down the road ... read more
