Todays gelato flavours - GMB - Ice something?(can't remember the name but it was pink and sweet) GLB - Mandarino OK,the location of the Best Western Hotel we booked, is a little outside of Siracusa city, but it is certainly quiet and we both had another greats nights sleep in the biggest King size bed we have ever had the pleasure to sleep in. The hotel is modern with excellent furnishings and a shower that actually works well. ! The breakfast was also great with all the usual cereals, croissants, juices, fruit yogurt and also scrambled eggs and bacon, which was a bonus. We topped up and found we didn't need a formal lunch stop during the day so good was the breakfast. Without the benefit of a newspaper to read over breakfast we played guess the nation of the varied ... read more

Gelato of the day - GMB - Zuppa Inglese(Italian for English Soup)the ice cream had slivers of crystalised fruit. Our hosts were ready with our breakfast after we had had a good nights sleep although the shower had again proved to be a challenge with the same set up as the previous night and the hot water appeared to run out. Despite what we thought were the usual thick walls between rooms Gretchen reckoned she heard all the action from our neighbouring room although I slept through it all.Perhaps her next door was just a noisy sleeper. Mt Etna revealed more of herself this morning and we got more photos before the cloud came acrossAt 3323m above sea level it dictates the weather in the area. Todays gelato flavour - GMB and GLB :Amarano(Cherry)Delicious with real pieces of cherries in it What an absolute cracker of a day dawned this morning and although our room faces east the sun took a while to rise enough to shine brightly into the room. There was still a haze out to sea so the islands off the coast which include Vulcano,an active volcanoe on which people live and you can also stay at various hotels. However overhead was a beautifully fine sky,and it looks like today will be the best one weather wise that we have had since arriving last week in Italy. Showering looked like it was going to be a challenge this morning so Gretchen went first to suss how best to handle it.She emerged suggesting I would have fun in there but not ... read more

Todays Gelato flavours - GMB - Limone and GLB - Chocolate(she reckons she will be into the fruit Gelatos once it warms up a bit more) Dawn arrived a bit later as we are now well and truly on the west coast and when it did, we were back to the overcast start to the day that most of the days we have had in Italy have been. On opening up the laptop we were pleased to see Ruth in Tauranga there on Skype and we had a good catch up with her although Owen was still out working so we will have to catch up with him next time. Breakfast was the best and most varied we have experienced so far with so many options from cereals to croissants to cake and a fried egg ... read more

Gelato flavour of the day : No time for one after escaping the trials of the streets of Napoli ! Victoria GPS doesn't know just how close she came to being ripped out from the dashboard and thrown onto the streets of Naples with all the other rubbish. Of course she will have the defence that a message comes up on the screen before the guidance starts that the system should not be used solely as a system to get you from point A to B. We should have gone with the Google map we looked at last night as it took us back north for a short distance and then onto a ring road around the north of Naples and onto a toll road and south. However the BBA V2 has a condition of avoiding ... read more

Todays Gelato flavour – GMB – Stracciatella(very fine chocolate bits) GLB – Tiramasu With yesterday behind us we woke well rested having used out new pillows. We are sure these are going to come in very handy as we continue our travels in providing a good night’s sleep. Another filling breakfast while we planned our day for sightseeing in Naples. We decided to give Capri a miss as the weather today still looks a bit changeable although the forecast was for improvement as the day went on. Gretchen checked out the best way to the city by public transport, there is no way we or anyone foreign should drive in Naples,if the guide books are anything to go by. It seemed the bus was the best option with the bus stop just up the road and one could buy ... read more

Gelato flavour of the day: Again N/A, didn’t pass a Gelateria, damn, tomorrow will be different! We had a mission planned for the day and that was to become self sufficient for breakfast and evening meals. To do this we needed to buy our microwave and toaster and that was going to take locating a shopping mall and one of the big supermercados, like a Warehouse but with groceries etc. After a very good hotel breakfast (man the warm croissants are getting a hiding in the mornings!)we set off downtown to check out what was there in the way of shopping not really expecting to find what we needed. In our one hour walk we did find billboards advertising a mall. So we jotted down the email address and came back to the hotel to suss ... read more

Gelato flavour of the day: N/A - no time for a gelato today Today, we expected, was always going to throw up some challenges what with, getting to the airport by the arranged time, picking up the car, finding our way south and hoping that the GPS would find our hotel in Pozzuoli near Naples. One isn’t supposed to get stressed on holiday but this isn’t a normal holiday for us more an adventure and with adventures comes the unknown and so the stress levels can rise and so it was to be today, not to a high level, just moderate, letting us know, we had to be on our toes to control the situation. To start with was the extra surprise of city tax to pay when we thought we had paid an all up ... read more

Gelato Flavour of the day: Tiramasu (GMB) and Chocolate (GLB) The day dawned with a little blue sky and there was going to be a good chance that our time in St Peters Square and we hear the Pope’s Easter message, to be delivered at noon, would be under sunny conditions. The croissants were late arriving and some of the other guests at the B&B couldn’t wait as they wanted to ensure a good position in the crowd for the big event. We thought breakfast, as it was,was just as important and so we hung on for the croissants to arrive and with full tummies we set off o the nearby Metro and onto the station near the Vatican. The subway platform at Termini station, which is the main railway station for the aboveground rail system ... read more

Todays Gelato flavour was : Mint and Chocolate I have had an ambition since my college days and geography lessons to see what the Appian Way in Rome was all about. The road was built initially for military purposes in 312 BC and ran all the way from Rome to Brindisi in the south, many hundreds of kilometres away.We were sure it wasn't going to look anything like that today. The day,at around 16C, was still a bit overcast and rain was in the forecast but not expected until later in the day. However we set off prepared with rain jackets which would also provide insulation from the breeze which was a cool westerly. Girogio, the B&B owner, suggested a 218 bus from in front of the nearby San Giovanni church. He wasn't sure how you actually paid to ride the ... read more
