There were kids everywhere at breakfast this morning and a couple sitting behind Gretchen hadn't been taught to eat with their mouths close.....enough said! It is another sunny morning and the prospects for a fine day for driving looks good.We continue to pinch ourselves for the weather we have enjoyed so far making it possible to be out and about every day without the need to wear a raincoat. It was always going to be difficult getting away from the hotel owner without him trying his English out on us and wanting to tell us about his wish to fish in NZ sometime as every time we have gone out he has been somewhere near the entrance to the hotel and it has taken 5 or 10 minutes of chatting to get past him.So this morning ... read more

Todays gelato flavour - Biscotti We had needed to get back to the east coast again, after visiting Lucca,so that we could make our run up the coast towards Venice and then on around to Croatia over the next 7 to 10 days.Rivabella,a beach resort town near Rimini was gearing itself up for the coming summer season and we got a good deal at the Marylise Hotel and as it turned out a room with a sea view. The only thing that didn't quite work out for us was the size of the room and we found we were tripping over each other and our suitcases as we tried to get by in the 3mt x 4mt space. We did joke though that this could be our lot when its time to leave our home for a rest ... read more

A third sombre breakfast at Bagni di Lucca couldn't be avoided and we think we shall make a comment on Trip Advisor suggesting that the hotel owner installs a system that allows music at least to be played at breakfast time to give some atmosphere for their guests.Had we been able to converse in Italian or German we could of course have small talk with the others that were at breakfast when we were but with our limited knowledge of those languages it would have been hard going. We are heading back to the East coast of Italy today to stay a couple of nights at Rimini so that we can visit the Republic of San Marino,an oddity amongst the countries of the world.More about that tomorrow when we take a couple of hours to visit ... read more

Todays gelato flavour(s) ,yes I indulged in two today - Fragola(rich in strawberries, yum) and Malaga(rum and raisin) The surprises keep coming for us as we travel around Italy and today there was another that we certainly didn't expect but more about that later. Breakfast was another rather 'sombre' occasion with no background music to soften the room sound a bit.Every time one got up to check the toast etc the chair legs made an awful noise on the tiled floor and you had the sense the others in the room all stared. It got to a point that we picked the chair up with hands under the seat so the legs didn't scrape the tiles. The German couple were back again from yesterday morning. They look so serious that you want to suggest they lighten up on life.We ... read more

The 24thApril is a day I always look forward to because once it comes around Gretchen becomes the same age in years as me, well at least for just over 2 months. I think she would have rather been celebrating it in ‘almost heaven,Umbria’but we were too late to change the booking in Bagni di Lucca without incurring a cost. Never mind with the shutters open the day is revealed as fine and sunny and the whole place, even the small room we have, looked quite different. It’s amazing what some sunshine can do for the spirit. We have to pay for the internet here at €2 per hour so we needed to time our usage with care and with that in mind we connected and tried to make contact with family on Skype, just in ... read more

Now I mentioned yesterday that Gretchen said she wasn’t going to leave the place we arrived at last night in the Umbrian countryside and this morning when I opened the shutters to let the sun and the sounds of the birds in the garden into our room and admired the countryside, even I was convinced along with her. This really was like the places you see in the tour brochures that encourage you to take a visit to Umbria and soak up the ambience and relax. What a life the owners of these places must have! Our overnight stay had been in an apartment that was one of 5 in the main building of an old farm house that had been converted for accommodation. The apartment had a large bedroom, separate toilet and shower as well ... read more

As the title may suggest to you we were to be reminded that even at our venerable age (Gretchen is almost there) we can still learn valuable lessons on the road. More of that later. We woke in Teramo to a partly cloudy morning which looked substantially better than the thunderstorm and rain from last night. The road sweeper was out keeping the streets cleaned which we are finding is more obvious now we are further north in Italy. Shame that the towns in the southern part of the country haven’t invested into these machines. Breakfast was good and the coffee strong (one morning coffee Ruth and Owen and you would have your equivalent for a whole year!) We knew that the journey from Teramo to Spoleto was going to take over some lesser, country roads ... read more

Todays gelato flavour = No gelato today but substituted with two delicious Italian sweet treats and cappuccinos in a stylish setting Back to the 1m x 1m shower cubicle with the wobbly sliding half doors this morning and to add to our showering experience was a semi rigid shower hose that came out of the wall opposite to where the shower head was resulting in a tussle with the hose as you turned in the cubicle. At least there was plenty of hot water. Although our room at the B&B was clean and tidy it was very basic and no comparison for value to the B&B Nacore of last night and it was another €4.50 for the night. We decided that pilgrims will pay to get accommodation to be part of the Saint Pio experience. Being Sunday there ... read more

Todays gelato flavours - GMB -Kinder Pingui(chocolate based) GLB - Scottobosco (Fruit of the Forest) Ah,the pleasure of a refreshing shower in a large shower cubicle with a shower head with lots of pressure and constant hot water and the shower spray covering your whole body, heaven!Sorry if this sounds a bit over the top but this was truly a delight to have after battling with the 1m x 1m shower cubicles with dodgy water supply and shower heads falling off the wall etc etc etc. B&B Nacore is such great value at €27.50 for the night including breakfast that we want to tell the world about it.Walter really should be charging more! He was there to serve us a great breakfast with all that we wanted including toast, which we hadn't had for a while as it ... read more

Gelato flavour of the day - missed out again but that might be good for the waistline We keep pinching ourselves as the day has started out fine and sunny again and we just hope that it keeps up for us as it is making travel that much more pleasureable. We had a good nights sleep and although the apartment was close to the SS106 the traffic volumes in the night must have been light as it didn't disturb us. With the sun on the terrace we moved our table outside and enjoyed breakfast including a boiled egg each, something we have managed to date having done with scrambled egg usually made in the microwave. We didn't have any egg cups so fashioned 'cups'from toilet paper and it worked a treat and we didn't burn our hands while ... read more
