We thought the destination we had chosen for last night’s stay was remote enough but we think we are outdoing that for tonight’s!! And the hotel we are staying in is a converted convent!!! The BBA is certainly trying to vary things up. Our hotel room here in Lleida has been so quiet and peaceful we have again slept in,this time we didn’t wake until 8am!!Perhaps it was the spa we had last night that put us in the relaxed mode as it does at home. However,no problem with rising late as breakfast is on at the hotel until midday, not that we want to be that late on the road. And what a bountiful breakfast it is too with not only the usual continental type items but also hot dishes such as bacon(well, proscuito actually) and some ... read more

Now without looking at your atlas or opening up Google can you say exactly how many kilometres it is from Barcelona to Lleida and in which direction from Barcelona is this city nobody has ever heard of except those that live there??? We have been watching the weather forecast for the past couple of days and rain has been predicted for the next several days on Spain’s Atlantic coastline. So we have started to have second thoughts about travelling in that direction as we have avoided any sustained periods of rain for the past 7 months and we would like to try and keep the record intact. We have left these thoughts a bit late as this morning we are supposed to be heading in a general northwesterly direction to the city of Lleida. And to add to ... read more

Our surroundings here are so comfortable that we have slept in again this morning although it won’t matter as we planned to be a bit later catching the train as we have clothes washing to do. So before we sit down to our breakfast it is down to the laundry, just a short walk away,to load up the 15kg washing machine. It has been a few days since we last did a big wash so there is quite a bit to load into the machine although we still couldn’t fill it. We have timed breakfast to be over when the wash cycle is finished and then we will just have to wait while the dryer does its job. With our two day metro pass we headed off to the railway station after folding and packing away the washing. But ... read more

As we mentioned yesterday this hotel on the University campus is stylish. And we have a bidet!! We are now starting to rank our hotel stays in Europe by whether our bathroom has a bidet or not and we are seriously thinking of getting one installed when we get home!!Without getting into too much detail for those who haven’t experienced a bidet in their bathroom, they are a delight and so hygienic!!They are one thing that Europeans have over us Kiwis!! Anyway onto things more serious and our day in Barcelona. The weather forecast is for rain later in the day but we are hoping that if it does arrive it will be after dark so we can do the sightseeing we have planned without us having to put our ANZAC ponchos on to keep dry. Our hotel ... read more

It was to be one of those incidents that for years we have joked about butwe never expect that they will ever actually happen to us!!However, this morning was to be different. After a rather spartan breakfast we packed ourselves up and headed down to checkout. There was a different man on reception to the one who checked us in and we had the feeling that after the little problem over the dinner last night that the account for our one night’s stay might not be correct. And so it was to be!! The man was a short fellow with a round face and he wore his spectacles on the end of his nose. We handed over the key and he went about printing off our account and passed it over the counter to us. As we ... read more

The Fasthotel might be cheap and the room small(the shower/toilet)is like a cubicle they added after the room was built,a bit like what you would buy at Mitre 10 and have installed except a bit bigger because it has a toilet and washbasin as well. The cubicle obviously wasn’t completely and firmly attached as it rocks a bit when you walk or should I say step in there because there isn’t much room to do anything else. However we must say the water pressure in the shower head is very good and we have tried out a few showers over the past 7 months!! It is time to bring out the long sleeve shirts and put them on top of the shirt pile in the Kathmandu shirt bag and relegate the short sleeve shirts to the bottom probably ... read more

La Cite,Carcassonne The plan today is to visit the area known as La Cite, the first site used as a town in Carcassonne. When we were driving into Carcassonne yesterday afternoon we caught a view of La Cite from the motorway and it looks a very interesting place with its rampart walls and witches hat roofs. Today though has not dawned so good and in fact there is steady rain as get to prepare for the day. But by the time we have finished breakfast the rain has stopped and the sky is clearing away to be at least partly cloudy. It is quite cool though and we are coming to appreciate that autumn is marching on.We haven’t yet seen a frost though and perhaps we have moved on fast enough when the places we have been in ... read more

Tuesday 3rd November Avignon to Carcassonne This hotel in Avignon might be a cheap one but it has been comfortable and quiet which was a pleasant to change to our stay in Trets with a couple of nights of boom boom music. The weather looks like it’s going to be a changeable and we may get showers on our drive. At least for the present it looks OK and we plan to spend an hour or so in the old part of Avignon before heading for Carcassonne. With a good distance ahead of us we hit the road early into the city and found a car park within the walls of the old city.We were quite surprised to see just how quiet the old city was and devoid of tourists although we guess that Avignon is more ... read more

Monday 2nd November We say goodbye to Renee Renault and onto Avignon There was no loud music overnight thankfully and we got a good night’s sleep. The good weather has deserted us today and there is steady rain as we load up RR for the drive to Marseille airport where we have to give her back after ‘owning’her for the past 152 days. She has been a very reliable car with only one small incident when we were in Switzerland where she wasn’t keen to start like she had done on every occasion before. We put that down to some rough Ukraine diesel we must have purchased and after the next fill she started again without fail everytime. We are picking up a Hertz rental car at the airport to transport us for the next 19 days before ... read more

Sunday 1st November Canyons at the Gorges du Verdun,Provence The loud music returned in the early hours of the morning and this time we were both woken by it.After lying in bed for a while hoping that those who were playing it might soon give up and go to bed. However,a half hour went by and there was no let up so I got dressed, grabbed our Kathmandu torch and headed outside to track down from exactly where the boom boom was coming from.I wasn’t sure what I was actually going to do if and when I found from where the music was coming. I walked around our apartment block which has about 20 units on two levels but there was only one unit that had a light on and there was no noise coming from it. Perhaps ... read more
