08-10-08 Today we awoke to a fine morning, as is normally the case in the desert, and to a spectacular view of the rugged mountains around Petra. We went and took some photos before breakfast, then headed down for a feed. After breakfast we packed once more, as after todays excursions we would head on to Amman. Or should say back to Amman as that is where we came from the night before. We were to spend the day in the lost city of Pertra. We thought it would be a long hot day, but the weather was quite pleasant. The high altitude made it considerably cooler than Cairo. We were very much looking forward to exploring another wonder of the world. The village of Petra is situated relatively high in the mountain formations, where as ... read more

06-10-08 We were picked up at 7am for 9am transfer by boat to Sharm El Sheikh, when on arrival at the boat harbour we discovered that the ferry had left at 4am, as our guide had not confirmed our departure time we missed the boat. No other boats were going today, so an alternative had to be found. If we couldn't get to Sham today, we would miss climbing Mt. Sinai to watch the sun rise, and miss visiting the Monastery of St. Catherine. Climbing Mt. Sinai was one of the highlights we really wanted to do. We also had to catch the ferry to take us to Jordan. A 14 hour car trip with a convoy, which left at 12.00 noon, was one option. This was not realistic as Sandra was sick with" Mummy belly". ... read more

05-10-08 With a rare free day, we decided to take a tour in a glass bottom catamaran to the coral reefs, just off shore. Brianna wasn't keen to go as she gets sea sick. We assured her it would be fine as the water was dead flat. We had to wait for the 2nd boat as we just missed the first one (not our fault the driver was late picking us up). While waiting we took a few photographs and Sandra almost got cast into the sea by a local fisherman who was fishing on the wharf. His hook almost catching her by the ear as he cast his line. Our boat finally arrived and we boarded for our tour. The water here is a beautiful aqua colour and as clear as crystal. We spent ... read more

04-10-08 Leaving the Nile this morning we joined the security convoy to travel 4 hours across the desert to the Red Sea city of Hurghada. The convoy is made up of cars, buses and vans which travel together with Police vehicles manned by police and security people with semi-automatic weapons. The convoy gathers at the starting point, each vehicle being security checked. Once underway the convoy moves very quickly past numerous intersections manned by more police and military personal. There is a short rest stop half way, then it's back on the road till you reach Hurghada. At this end security checks are done again to ensure all vehicles are accounted for. All the places we have been we have felt safe, as there is is large number of police, Tourist Police as they are called. ... read more

3/10/08 This morning we went to the West Bank to explore the buriel grounds in the Valley of the Kings and Queens. The remote, barren valley of the Kings was the the necropolis of the New Kingdom pharaohs. By digging their tombs deep into the Theban Hills, pharaohs had hoped that it would stop robbers stealing their priceless possessions buried with them. It was an unsuccessful strategy. Despite their hidden locations, every burial chamber was raided except for those of Yuya and Tuya and Tutankhamun. The terrain is mountainous desert. With our entry ticket we visited the tombs of Ramesses IV, Ramesses 1 and the most well known and famous tomb of Tutankhamun. The tomb of Ramesses IV was the first one we entered. It was unbelievable, not what we expected at all. It was ... read more

2/10/08 Today we're going to visit the temple of Horus. Being buried under sand and silt for nearly 2000 years, it is the largest and best preserved Egyptian temple. Construction of the temple began in 237BC and the main temple complex took 25 years to complete. It still amazes me to think that we are walking the same steps and touching the same walls that the early Egyptions have. After our temple visit we continued to sail up the Nile and passed through the Esna lock. ... read more

01/10/08 Still in Aswan, our tour today took us to the High Dam, Temple of Philae and Kom Ombo. The High Dam was constructed from 1960 -1971 across the Nile River at Aswan. It was built to control unpredictable flood waters, and supply a constant flow of water for irrigation and human use. Power is also produced through the hydroelectric station at the dam. Behind the wall is the largest man made lake in the world, Lake Nasser. The dam wall is 3.6km long, 980m wide at its base and stands 111m high. To get to the Temple of Philae we took short boat ride, as the temple is situated on an island a couple of kilometres down stream from The High Dam. The Temple was relocated between 1972 an 1980. Due to it being inundated ... read more

30/09/08 We woke on the train, nice and fresh, ready for breakfast at 7.00am. Breakfast still hadn't come by 8.00am so the girls rang the bell for the steward to find out where breakfast was, he arrived in his pj's and slippers and said breakfast will be here soon, as we were supposed to be arriving in Aswan at about 8.10 am, 9am came and still no breakfast. By this time the girls were starving and we were hungry too, once again the stewards bell was rung. This time he told us brekfast was on its way and that we still had 7 hours to go till we reached Aswan. The train had broken down 50km out of Cairo, so we still had a long way to go. Luckily the train was quite comfortable and ... read more

26/09/08 - 29/09/08 We arrived at our hotel near by the Great Pyramids of Giza. We first saw them while still on the main road through Ciaro. It would be very hard to get lost with a land mark like the Pyramids to guide you. It seemed very strange to see their shape jutting up into the sky as you walk out into the street outside the hotel. It is surprising how close they are to suburbia. We imagined them to be out in the middle of the desert. They are boardered on one side by the desert, and houses on the other. Our driver who drove us from one hotel to the other said that 20 years ago there was not a house within cooee of the Pyramids. It is amazing to see these huge ... read more

24/09/08-29/09/08 We arrived safely early in the morning and transferred to our 7 star ritzy hotel. It was a flash one. Luckily we got a good deal by booking early, which included breakfast and dinner, otherwise we wouldn't have been able to afford the food. We felt a little out of place with our backpacks and shorts and T shirts. But we were made very welcome and the girls were a hit with everyone. We used these couple of days to rest and relax after a fast paced wildlife safari. The hotel served the best variety of food, which is just as well because on our backpacker budget we pinched the breakfast food to have for lunch. They had 4 pools including a wave pool and kids water park, Cable TV with 3 kids channels, ... read more
