Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Eden March 4th 2012

Today we crossed the border into New South Wales – although we’re not sure when as there was no sign to tell us! Having arrived in Eden, we took a cruise around the town and to the wharf where Dean went fishing. There is no doubt in my mind that he is addicted to fishing as, the following morning, I woke up early to the sound of the engine starting. Dean had decided to drive down to the beach at the crack of dawn to do more fishing! We had spent the night parked in a pub car park and luckily nobody came knocking on the van. Though we have already prepared our excuse for that event: Dean has drunk too much to drive and I don’t have a driving license!:-) Its name well justified, Eden ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Mallacoota March 2nd 2012

We didn’t leave Lakes Entrance until late morning… mainly because it was so hard to leave behind the cosy armchairs and TV!! Once on our way, we stopped at Cape Conran, a coastal park with beach, rocks and walking tracks. We walked around the coastline to a lovely secluded spot with rock pools and what looked like fossilised trees. Other people had built pretty stone stacks, so I added one too. On the way to Mallacoota, a car overtook us and caused a pebble to hit our windscreen. There’s a slight chip but thankfully it hasn’t moved yet. It’s a bit of a déjà-vu from our Christmas trip to New Zealand. This has never happened before, and now it’s happened twice in a row! It was late afternoon by the time we reached Mallacoota. As the ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Falls Creek February 29th 2012

Wow, it’s a leap year! Happy birthday to all those born on 29 February:-) After a leisurely morning of yoga and fishing (Dean caught a trout which we had for lunch) we started our drive back towards the coast. We stopped in at Falls Creek which, like the drive itself, is really picturesque. What was a ghost town while we were there (we only saw a handful of people who worked there) becomes a hip and thriving ski resort during the winter. You can just imagine how magical it would be with the snow, sipping hot drinks in one of the many bars and chilling out in the spa (one luxury resort had one spa on each balcony – nice!). We made it back to Lakes Entrance in the evening and, totally knackered, set up camp ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Mount Beauty February 28th 2012

Mount Beauty certainly lives up to its name. The scenery is beautiful, and so are the people (that’s you, Di & Jo – you guys rock – thanks so much for having us!). We learnt that there isn’t actually a mountain called Mount Beauty, rather it is just the township that carries the name. It’s a gorgeous little place with real community spirit. In the pilates studio, I asked if there were any local yoga classes. I was told to ask the lady in the greengrocer’s, who sent me to the hardware shop, where the sales assistant called his mum to get the yoga teacher’s phone number. Lovely! The locals also share their home grown fruit and veggies around and greengrocer offered to give me some fresh figs from the tree in her garden. Unfortunately we weren’t ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Bright February 27th 2012

Lake Catani is the highest body of water in Victoria. Even from a distance of 25 meters, we sadly didn’t get to see it because of the severe fog and rain! The weather has been shocking (with heavy rain and flash floods forecast for the next few days too) and we both had to use ear plugs during the night because the rain was so loud on the roof of our van. By the morning, everything on the outside of the van was covered in mud.My poor bike – it hasn’t even been ridden yet and it already looks a bit worse for wear. We decided not to let the weather cramp our style and went hiked up to The Horn, Mount Buffalo’s highest point at 1723 meters. The Minjambuta Aboriginals, who lived below the snowline ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Mount Buffalo February 26th 2012

Another blissful night in a proper bed :-)Thanks so much for your lovely hospitality, Blaithin and Rory! After saying our goodbyes, we put on a great jazz soundtrack (thanks for the tunes Nici!) and hit the Great Alpine Road up to Mount Buffalo. We stopped at the sleepy village of Omeo for lunch and a walk-around. The twisty, windy and hilly Great Alpine Road boasts views of cloud-topped rolling hills and pretty countryside. Rather worryingly, we came across some crazy cyclists. I would’ve thought this route way too dangerous for riding… Around Hotham (where the road markings change from white to yellow because the area is covered in snow during winter) we encountered rain, sleet and near white-out conditions. In parts, we could only see about 10 meters ahead of us! ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Lakes Entrance February 25th 2012

Four weeks after leaving Melbourne, we spent our first night in a proper bed. And we slept like logs! In the morning, we had the opportunity to check out Blaithin and Rory’s absolutely stunning house, before having breakfast on the balcony overlooking the lake… and the neighbour’s house, which is a castle. We experienced total house envy and are happy to house-sit anytime at all, you guys! After a leisurely morning (it was the morning of the night before), we took a drive and visited the Buchan Caves. These caves were actually discovered with tourism in mind. They were created by an underground stream which still fills the nearby, rather murky looking, “swimming pool”. The stalactites and stalagmites were very impressive and, as it was a sweltering 42 degree day, the 17 degree underground temperature was ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Bairnsdale February 23rd 2012

We were delighted to hear that, after a stint in Perth, our friend/Dean’s cousin Andrew was back in Bairnsdale around the time we were going to be there.Even better, it was going to be Andrew’s birthday! After passing back through Sale to pick up some solar panels for our van, we made it to Bairnsdale, “the commercial capital of Gippsland”. We found a lovely holiday park with a swimming pool and resident emus, alpacas, sheep, chickens, ducks and all sorts of birds. We spent the afternoon in the lovely cool pool (a welcome relief in the 40 degree heat) and taking care of our mounds of washing and dishes! In the evening, Andrew showed us around the area and the lovely waterside village of Paynesville. The next morning, after doing a much-needed oil change on our ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Gippsland February 21st 2012

We are now experts at setting up our little mobile home whenever we move to a new spot. On arriving at Paradise Beach, a lovely little free-camping area near Seaspray, we were all set up with our new tent poles and guy-ropes within 10 minutes. We can now walk underneath the sunshade without having to duck. Genius! We do, however, need to pay more attention to the direction in which we set up (ie van opens to the non-sunny side) and we need to reduce our personal space (ie it’s okay to be close to other campers to secure a great spot). We spent the evening going for a walk on beautiful Paradise Beach (its name is well justified), enjoying our $4 wine (surprisingly very yum!) and watching our latest installment of Alcatraz (we’re both hooked ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Sale February 19th 2012

It’s been three weeks today since we left our Melbourne pad.How time flies! On the way to Sale in Gippsland, we stopped at quaint Port Albert for lunch and a walk. This surprisingly popular little place comprises a pub/hotel, a fish & chip shop, a small harbour and handful of houses. A number of people were fishing off the jetties and we were lucky enough to see a very large stingray. Our camping spot in Sale was actually the town’s showground. When it’s not in use, it becomes a cheap caravan park – and we had use of the awesome showground café kitchen. Sale itself is a rural little town and we will remember it for its extremely unpredictable weather. Within 36 hours of our arrival, we had experienced a heatwave, thunder, pouring rain and clear ... read more
