Suzanne here... Landing at Lima was an experiance. It was the middle of the night, and the city was lit up as far as they eye could see. At this point it dawned on me just how absolutely vast Lima is. We arrived at 1.30am. I'd wanted to save some money by hanging around the airport until morning. But David was keen to book a hotel. Given that we only had four nights / three days in Lima I did see the sense in not spending the first day grubby and exhausted. So we booked a hotel, and also their airport transfer service to avoid searching for a taxi in the middle of the night. Once we'd got through security there was Luis waiting for us with my name on a sign. It was nice to ... read more

South America » Colombia » Villa de Leyva March 7th 2017

David here... The journey from Bogota was a little more stressful than it should've been due to the bus terminal being moved and the conductor constantly trying to tell us something in Spanish. Damn Google Translate not working offline at just the time we needed it. Anyway, as Suzanne mentioned in the previous post, the scenery was stunning, especially the bit between Tunja (pronounced Tunka, as someone helpfully told us in passing on the street). It reminded me of Switzerland without the snow or the peak district, just bigger. We arrived at the Terminal del Transporte and stepped out into Villa de Leyva, which can only be described as one of the most beautiful towns we have ever been. No wonder the guidebooks say it is a must see. All of the buildings are low rise ... read more

Suzanne here... We landed back in Bogota during the day, so this time we could get the bus. We'd had the foresight to save two journey's on our tu llave card so it was all very easy. Although if you don't have one apparently it's possible to ask another passenger if you can use theirs and pay them the money. We caught the M86 bus - Google doesn't seem to recognise it, but in fact it departs from right outside arrivals and is clearly signposted. We did have to get off the bus at El Dorado for some reason, just to get right back on the same bus minutes later. Arriving back to Chaperino all felt very familar and we found our hotel easily. I say hotel, it was actually a hostel, albeit in a private ... read more

South America » Colombia » Cartagena March 2nd 2017

David here... An uneventful hour flight later and we were on the Caribbean coast in the city of Cartegena. The first thing that struck us was the heat. It was hot... much hotter than Bogota or Medellin where the altitude makes a massive difference to the climate. We walked out of the airport and were immediately accosted by taxi drivers, but we'd read that you should go to the taxi counter first to get a price otherwise you'll end up paying over the odds as the taxis have no meters and the driver will quote you a larger fare if you'd not got a fare up front. The counter was a left turn out of the airport and it cost COP 12,500 to get to our hotel. The Hotel de Magdalena was a small, basic room ... read more

Suzanne here... Although we weren't ready to leave Guatape, sadly we had to. The Medellin bus filled up very quickly, so I was glad we'd bought our tickets the previous day. It was another lovely journey with stunning scenery. We reached Terminal del Norte at 2.30pm. Given the bargainous cost, a taxi was the sensible option. But after the faff with the last guy we couldn't be bothered. We much prefer public transport and there was a metro line from the bus station to a stop ten minutes walk from our hotel. It worked really well and at 3pm we arrived at the Orange Travellers Suites. We were staying in Medellin for six nights so we'd booked an aparthotel, i.e. a room with a little kitchenette. As soon as we walked in we were happy. Clean, ... read more

David here... We jumped off the bus in Medellin just as it was beginning to get dark. We ignored the people 'organising' taxis for everyone and approached a taxi driver and showed him the address to our £16 hotel room. He said 'Si' and we were on our way. He dropped us off one road too early, but apart from that we arrived safely. The Hotel Casa Jardin was up some stairs and through a metal gate, controlled by reception. Our room was small, hot and cheap. It was only for one night and we weren't expecting to stay in much. We dumped our bags, chose a restaurant and headed out. We hit Restaurante el DF, a Mexican cantina, and enjoyed a Burro and Chimichanga, before moving onto the Custom Rock Bar a short walk away. ... read more

South America » Colombia » Bogota February 16th 2017

Suzanne here... We landed in Bogota 12 hours later than expected, at about 11.15pm. Our only choice was to get a taxi. We'd been warned about just flagging one down, but the general consensus seemed to be the airport taxi rank was safe enough. In the end I think he overcharged us a bit, but nothing too outrageous and he did take a direct route. We were just glad to be at our hotel. Hotel Casona del Patio was basic but quite charming, and cheap. It was also in the area we wanted to be in, Chaperino. However for once we were not tempted to explore. It was quick showers and bedtime. Of course we felt lots better after some sleep. We were in South America! Despite the travelling we've done, including most of Central America, ... read more

David here... We arrived at LAX at around 1700 and were walking out of the airport by 1800. We managed to be the first ones off the buses into immigration and with our ESTA visa waivers in place we breezed through. The first stage was the electronic passport, customs and finger print/photo taking which was different from the last time as it was fully automated. The next step was a full immigration check, where Suzanne went first and had fingerprints and photos again. I went to another desk and the guard asked me about our travels and why I was in LA. I explained, quite enthusiastically that we love LA and were here for sightseeing and a gig. He then asked about the gig and I explained about seeing Lordi at the Whisky in 2 days ... read more

Asia » South Korea » Seoul » Hongdae February 6th 2017

Suzanne here... I was really excited about Seoul. We arrived at the huge bus terminal, some way from our hotel, not unexpected given the size of Seoul. We found wi-fi and worked out which bus we needed. First of all we picked up T-cards, the easiest way to travel in Seoul. There was one blip when the first card we'd paid for failed to dispense. We pressed the call button and an engineer came out, and promptly found the ticket which was just stuck at the side. Oops! The bus took about 45 minutes. First impressions of the area were good with lots of cute bars and resturants (we'd picked it for nightlife). We were staying at the Haemil Guesthouse. The room was small but fine, apart from the stupid shower attached the sink arrangement as ... read more

David here... The first bus journey from Gyeongju to Daegu took 50 minutes and was very comfortable. Arrivals was on the 2nd floor. Ticket sales and departures were on the 3rd floor. We made our way up and found the ticket counters. While looking at the boards, which did have English on, we were approached by a gentleman in uniform who asked us if we required any assistance. We asked about onward tickets to Daejeon and he promptly led us over to the ticket counter, ordered the tickets for us, translated the sellers information and then led us to the platform gate we required. We were astounded and very appreciative of the assistance. We would've been able to figure it all out given time I'm sure, but to have some official assistance made it really easy. ... read more
