Suzanne here... Getting into Foz do Iguacu from the airport was easy. Local bus 120 stops outside departures (make sure to get one going to Downtown not the national park). It's not the first stop so can be busy. David had to stand but I was lucky enough to grab a seat. It was R$3.45 each and the journey into town takes about 40 minutes. Less than ten minutes from town a huge storm hit us. The rain and wind was incredible, with trees and branches crashing into the road. The bus had to take a detour to avoid a huge branch. We waited it out at the bus station for a few minutes before making a dash for the hotel, luckily only a few minutes away. Hotel Bogari was pretty nice. It's actually a bit ... read more

David here... The taxi arrived promptly at 05:00, an obscene time to have to get up, but it was the cheapest flight from Salvador to Rio. The airport and flight were both fine. Once at Rio airport we found the BRT ticket booth at the far end of the hall and bought tickets for the bus, which was waiting outside at the platform. The Rio BRT service is exactly like the Bogota Transmilenio service, where you purchase a card and amount of journeys you want and you scan your card to get onto the platform. One card for as many people as you like. The 30 semi-directo bus was the one in so we just jumped on. We were soon on our way and following our route on the map on the bus. This bus didn't ... read more

Suzanne here... It took much longer to get to Salvador than anticipated. Brazil is vast, so even a domestic flight took two and a half hours. Then once at Salvador airport we chose our usual money-saving bus instead of taxi option. It was easy enough to get the bus (straight through the multistory carpark in front of arrivals then turn right - no signs but easy to find). The bus was cheap, but it did go the long way round so took over an hour to reach the Centro Historico. But on a budget it is probably the right choice. Originally we were going to head north of Salavador for a couple of days. But then we read about Morro de Sao Paulo, on the island of Tinhare. It sounded lovely, so we revised our plans. ... read more

David here... The flight from Santa Cruz to Sao Paulo was over 2 hours, our longest flight for a while (and number 28 of this trip - so far, so many more than we envisaged). The checks at Santa Cruz airport took a long time, including a narco check, where every bag was checked and then random person searches took place as well. Suzanne spotted what was going to happen next but I didn't so was shocked when one of the attendants made a beeline for me and dragged me into a room to be searched. It was only an over the clothes search but being directed to a small room in a foreign land is never a good thing and the nerves do start jangling a little. The flight itself was fine, we had the ... read more

Suzanne here... Back in Santa Cruz, it was a relatively short walk to our hotel, the Backpacker Apart and Suites. It was fine. Clean and bright with very friendly staff. The only drawback was a pitiful shower. We went staight out to grab some lunch, keen to try Alexander's where we'd had coffee and cake at other branches before. This one proved to be miles out of town, and the food wasn't even that great tbh. Still, it was ok and did the job of giving us the energy to explore the town. I'll admit this didn't take long, but it is quite nice. After a wander, and freshening up at the hotel, came the most important decision of our day, where to have dinner. We were not bowled over by our choices so decided to ... read more

David here... The flight from Sucre to Santa Cruz was easy and quick. The flight attendants didn't even have time to make coffee, much to my disappointment. As we had an early flight, we changed our original plan to stay in Santa Cruz and decided to go straight to Samaipata. Made more sense and would give us two days in Santa Cruz at the end. We landed at Santa Cruz and located the mini-bus into town, which left from Departures. The bus cost 6Bs each and was packed but 45 minutes later we were dropped off at the old bus terminal in the south of the city as we expected. On the bus Suzanne got talking with a Bolivian lad about his city, travelling and, unfortunately, Chelsea, who he supported, though we did suggest he should ... read more

Suzanne here... I was not looking forward to the flight to Sucre as I was still feeling really ill. I suspect food poisoning, but am not sure enough to point the finger of blame. In any case, before the flight I made sure I was dosed up with loperamide (Imodium) and in possession of sick bags, and luckily managed the short flight without shaming myself. As per usual, we tried to avoid getting a taxi at the airport. Luckily there were minibuses (some were Amazonas branded, but available to everyone) outside arrivals for 8Bs each. After a short journey, and a little bit of a walk, we arrived at Hostal CasaArte Takubamba. Quite backpackerish, but our room was quite nice, the bed was comfortable, and there was hot water. Much as I could have just gone ... read more

South America » Bolivia » La Paz Department » La Paz April 21st 2017

David here... The journey from Coroico to La Paz took a couple of hours, but unlike the journey there it was misty and rainy so we couldn't see much of the view. We arrived back at Terminal Provisional Minas in Villa Fatima and decided not to jump into the first taxi, but to see what mini-vans passed by. Sure enough, after a couple of minutes a van pulled up with San Francisco listed on the front. We hopped in and after 30 minutes or so we were outside of Iglesia de San Francisco. The journey cost us 4Bs in total (50p), a good saving over a taxi. We were staying up the hill behind the Iglesia at Hotel Saganarga, right in the heart of the centre of the city. The hotel lobby was modern but the ... read more

Suzanne here... The flight from Rurrenbaque to La Paz was great. We were in a tiny little propeller plane, with single seats each side of the aisle. Our obsession with arriving at airports early paid off too, as we were on the front seats, just inches away from the cockpit, which was fun. Landing in La Paz, we decided to ignore the taxi drivers and try the colectivo service. Minibus no. 212 left from just outside arrivals and took us all the way to Plaza Isabel la Católica, a two minute walk from our hotel. At 2bs each (about 23p) it was a great saving compared to the 70bs going-rate for a taxi. We felt quite pleased with ourselves. Our hotel was Casa Hermanos Manchego. This was a last minute change from Casa Skyways B&B, who ... read more

David here... We got to airport with plenty of time to spare for our flight north from La Paz to Rurrenabaque. The traffic in La Paz was really bad but we had given ourselves enough time. We breezed through check-in, thanks to our printed boarding passes, so decided to grab a snack of chicken tenders to share from a Tropical Chicken place (surprisingly good) before going through to the gates. The flight was delayed by 30 minutes but it wasn't too long until we were seated on the plane and in the air. We were only flying for about 40 minutes, time enough for a lovely coffee with condensed milk. We came to land among the most stunning and green scenery we've ever seen. The airport at Rurrenabaque was tiny, so much so that we were ... read more
