Suzanne here... The minibus to Hua Hin was a success. Half the price and journey time of the train and comfortable enough. All the other passengers were Thai, which makes you feel you are doing the right thing, if it's good enough for the locals. It was a bit of a crazy trip with birds in a box behind us and the driver with his foot glued to the accelerator. It seemed to us that there were a couple of near misses! Some of the roads were really flooded too. I'd done a quick search of guesthouses at the hostel as I knew Hua Hin could be expensive. We made our way straight to one of them - Tientong. There was nobody there when we arrived which confused us a bit. We waited around and after ... read more

Suzanne here... Yesterday was another mental day, which seems to be the norm in Bangkok. We didn't wake up until nearly lunchtime, obviously we needed to catch up on our sleep. After a wander around the shopping centre, where I bought a t-shirt (which I fully expect to disintegrate the first time I wash it) we headed to Lumphini Park. We managed to decline the many taxi and tuk-tuk drivers who seem incredulous that anyone would want to walk anywhere. We stopped for lunch at a place called Polo Fried Chicken, where we had fried chicken (of course) with sticky rice and papaya salad. Very nice. We then headed into the park, which was a nice break from the hustle and bustle of Bangkok. Naturally it was still a bit mad. The 'muscle beach' stylee area ... read more

David here......... Well, we've made it to Bangkok! Managed to get through customs and to our hostel with very little problem. The new high speed train from the airport was quick and easy to figure out and we found the hostel OK. We've been upgraded to a Double Deluxe room, so we have our own bathroom. The hostel is lovely, I have described it as Industrial chic as the walls and floor are bare, however it is all spotlessly clean. Once settled into the room, we made our way out to find some food and drink. Ended up in the shopping centre food court across from the hostel and sampled Fried chicken with rice, a soup of salty water and coriander and stewed pork with rice. All of it was very tasty and cost us 2 ... read more

Suzanne here... So, it's time to go. Said our goodbyes to family and friends. I found it really hard to say goodbye to our niece, Natalie. Of course I'll miss everyone, but everyone else will be pretty much the same when we get back. Nat is only six, and changes all the time. We had one last cuddle and she gleefully waved us off without a care in the world, I sat in the car, bottom lip trembling and unable to speak for the journey home. Our last evening at home, once we'd done a bit more cleaning and packing, was nice. We watched a film, had a bottle of wine and just enjoyed our home. The final morning was a bit hectic though. Packing our remaining stuff in the loft took long enough, but the ... read more

David here....... Just a quick update for you all. The last few days have been a mad scramble to get everything done in the house and to get round and see family and friends before we set off for Thailand tomorrow. The packing for the trip is now pretty much done and we have managed to squeeze in just about everything we need. The house is now in the process of being cleaned from top to bottom and we are readying ourselves for one final night in our home. Special mention must go to Marie and James who invited us round to their house last night, and provided us with a Christmas meal, complete with Crackers. The food was divine and was very much appreciated. It will be long remembered on our trip and was a ... read more

Suzanne here… So here we are, after nearly two years of planning and dreaming about our trip, it’s now less than a week away. We’d discussed a round the world trip many times, but about two years ago the idea really started to grow, and it wouldn’t go away. We decided to start saving for it - if it didn’t happen we could always use the money for something else. In January 2009 we started a strict saving plan. Bills / mortgage had to be paid, but other than that we had a budget: £60 pw for food, £30 pm for petrol, £20 pw each spending money and £60 pm for a monthly treat. With a couple of exceptions, we really did stick to this. The food budget was generous, so there was a little ‘creative ... read more
