Suzanne here... We didn't plan to come to Guayaquil. I'd heard damning reports about the place, merely a necessary stop before the Galapagos. But after much soul-searching, we're not going to the Galapagos. I know, I know. It's practically obligitory when you visit Ecuador, right? Well, not for us. One reason is that we know the place is over-visited. This is a concern partly as we don't really want to be crammed together with hundreds of other people. But also because we are very aware that this level of mass tourism is damaging all that makes the place special. Plus it's incredibly expensive, and our budget has been hit hard as it is. The main reason for going is the wildlife. But none of the wildlife excited us as much as the animals and birds we ... read more

David here... We left Latacunga in high spirits. However about 10 minutes into the journey Suzanne spotted a family standing by a horse lying in a pool of blood by the side of the road, obviously hit and killed by a vehicle. The woman was still holding the reins and they were all looking down in shock and disbelief. This was really upsetting and it took us a while to shake off the feeling of sadness for the family and the horse. We arrived into Ambato after an hour and bought tickets to Cuenca on the 12:00 bus, getting seats together, which is why we wanted to take this route over trying to stop a bus on the highway. The tickets cost $9 each. We had a 2 hour wait so got coffee. Suzanne asked for ... read more

Suzanne here... It was a long flight to Quito. Mainly because the cheapest flight involved flying right over Ecuador and all the way to Panama. Doubly annoying as we've wanted to go to Panama for ages, but there was no time to leave the airport. We did however get a glimpse of Panama City and the Panama Canal from the air. About 12 hours after setting off, we finally landed at 9pm. Usually we are really stubborn about getting the bus. But even we realised that was a bit daft landing in a brand new county, with a bit of a reputation, in the dark, after many hours of travelling. Our B&B offered to pick us up for $10. I tell you, landing at night to see a smiling face and a board with your name ... read more

South America » Chile » Santiago Region » Santiago July 18th 2017

David here... We sadly left our wonderfully comfortable room in Valpo. There was an issue with the card payment connection, and most hotels wouldn't let you leave until you found another way to pay. At Puerta Escondido however our host just said she'd ring it through later on and let us know if there were any issues. This highlights just how relaxed and laidback the place is. We walked down the hill to the nearby plaza and jumped onto a Trolebus that took us to within a couple of blocks of the bus station. We spotted a Pulman bus waiting in a bay that was due to leave for Santiago in 5 minutes. Within 2 we had bought tickets, managing to get seats together, and stowed our luggage. The bus left on time and about 1.5 ... read more

Suzanne here... Every Tur bus we've seen has been new and fancy looking, so I was looking forward to our journey. Disappointingly our Tur Bus was old and dirty. Bah. Still not the the worst bus we saw though. About halfway into our journey we passed the blackened shell of an Expresso Norte bus. A fireman was still hosing down the smoldering luggage compartment. Looks like the poor passengers lost everything. Our only issue was the kid behind us. Bored out of his brain, he would not sit still. He phoned his mum twice just for something to do (I imagine she was thrilled). Towards the end he began to 'sing'. Or more accurately drone on in a toneless monotonous voice. We thought he'd soon lose interest, but no. His dad put in his headphones and ... read more

South America » Chile » Coquimbo Region » Vicuna July 8th 2017

David here... The journey to Vicuna only took about an hour. It was earlier than we'd said we would arrive, giving us time for lunch before checking in. In the main plaza we spotted a vegetarian restaurant called Govinda offering a meal and drink for C$2500 (about £3). Wanting something a little more healthy, we decided to give it a go. We both went for pakoras. The meal came with salad and rice. It was very tasty, especially enhanced with the hot sauce I'm still carrying. It was tasty home cooked food at a good price. By this time we could check in to our hostel, Las Delicias, about 5 minutes from the main square. We were greeted by a friendly gentleman (who spoke no English) and his even friendlier dog. It turned out to be ... read more

South America » Chile » Coquimbo Region » La Serena July 5th 2017

Suzanne here... The bus arrived in La Serena 1.5 hours late. Not usually a big deal, but we'd booked an apartment and given an arrival time of 2pm, and it was that already. There were no taxi's (perhaps as the Confederations Cup Final between Chile and Germany was on). Nor could I find free wi-fi anywhere to let them know. We found the bus stop and after a bit of a wait a bus came along and took us to within 10 minutes walk of the apartment. We were just under an hour late. The security chap had to phone the guy (who had given up waiting for us) to come back. All rather embarrassing. Still, the apartment was fabulous. Modern and with a great sea view. We quickly settled in and then went out to ... read more

David here... As Suzanne has mentioned, there was some 'excitement' on the the bus to Iquique. I couldn't believe that they put on 'I Spit on your Grave' for us to 'enjoy'. I thought it would at least be heavily edited. It wasn't. As it got worse and worse, I got more and more angry, until I couldn't just sit there. I stalked down the bus to find the attendant, unsuccessfully, then knocked loudly on the door to the drivers cab and told him in English what the film was about and to turn it off. He thought I was motioning to the air conditioning so lowered that, so I said 'the film, the film', again in English. He then got it, and turned it off. With hindsight, looking up the phrases I needed in Spanish ... read more

Suzanne here... The journey to San Pedro de Atacama was fine. As it got light we could appreciate the amazing scenery. The border crossing at Paso de Jama was closed when we arrived, which was a bit of a worry. But after a two hour wait they opened it up. Such a relief as we didn't fancy turning back. It took the best part of an hour to pass through both border controls, but in the end we were on our way. We arrived a couple of hours late, but we were just delighted it had all worked out. Because of the uncertainty we had not booked a hotel. Luckily the bus station had wi-fi so we did a bit of research and headed off to find our prefered option. It was a bit expensive at ... read more

South America » Argentina » Jujuy June 24th 2017

David here... First of all, I have to say this, there is nothing to do in San Salvador de Jujuy. 2 nights was far too long, even for us who like to take our time getting to know a place and just wander. We arrived at the new out of town bus terminal and bought onward tickets to Tilcara. We faced an hour walk into the centre of town. Then we spotted a line of bus stops and identified a location that appeared to be near our hotel. We jumped on one of the buses, asking the driver if he was going to 'el centro'. He said yes and I handed him 20 pesos and he used his own Sube card to pay for us. Within 10 minutes we were standing outside our hotel. Casa Flores ... read more
