Suzanne here... On the bus journey from Puno to Copacabana we finally started to get some idea of the scale of Lake Titicaca. The trip was about four and a half hours long, and still we followed the lakeshore. The border crossing was easy. Stamp out of Peru, short walk, stamp into Bolivia. There was a slightly dodgy moment when we were asked for a two boliviano or soles fee to enter the city. We'd used up all our soles and didn't yet have bolivianos. The fact they gave up easily when we told them this makes me wonder how official the fee is. Copacabana gave us a much more favorable first impression than Puno. Lake Titicaca looked stunning. This is what we'd expected in Puno, but there we'd been disapointed. Here was just what we'd ... read more

David here... The bus journey from Arequipa was around 6.5 hours and was comfortable enough. We got a light lunch of a chicken sandwich and a cake on the bus plus a drink of tea. It was mid-afternoon when we arrived at Puno, our final destination in Peru. On the shores of Lake Titicaca, it seemed such an evocative place. We'd booked 4 nights, thinking we would find some great hikes, views and space. Our first impressions of Puno were not great as we passed through on the coach. It looked dusty, drab and like any typical border town. The 15 minute walk to the hotel did nothing to dispel our fears. What had we done? 4 nights here when we might have been better using a couple in the Sacred Valley or Colca regions. We ... read more

Suzanne here... More lovely scenery made the five hour journey from Cabanaconde pass quickly, and we saw loads of wild vicunas (much like llamas). However as we neared Ariquipa the landscape changed. Suddenly everything was more built-up and industrial. I could quite easily have fled back to Colca. We arrived at Terminal Terrestre, inconveniently out of town. But at least it meant we could buy our onward bus tickets to Puno. Once this was achieved we agreed a price of 10 soles with a taxi driver (the colectivos all looked rammed) and despite the terrible traffic we were soon at our hotel. Hotel Bubamara was a plain, locked door with a small sign to indicate we were in the right place. We rang the bell and were welcomed inside. It was actually much roomier than we ... read more

South America » Peru » Arequipa » Cabanaconde March 28th 2017

David here... First of all, I must apologise for the amount of photos and panoramas in this blog. It's not my fault. The Colca Canyon area around Cabanaconde is just so beautiful. The photos don't even do the area justice. Of all the beautiful places we've been in our travels; Switzerland, Austria, Middlesborough, Peru is up there as one of the most stunning places we've ever been, if not the most beautiful. The trip from Yanque to Cabanaconde wasn't as easy as we thought. We had read, and were told, that buses pass through the main plaza all day. Well, the 09:30 bus we expected never turned up and after 45 minutes of waiting we asked in a local shop. We were told that the next bus was at 15:00 ish. As we were debating what ... read more

Suzanne here... The colectivo from Chivay dropped us off in Yanque's Plaza de Armes at about 10am. It was a bit early to check into our B&B. Yanque is tiny, but luckily we found one cafe, Coca, near the church. It was a nice place so we stayed for a couple of cappuccino's each. By the time we'd finished it was a more reasonable check in time and we got to Miskiwasi B&B at 11.30am. First impressions were good - a lovely garden and nice resturant area. Our room wasn't quite ready but after a bit of rushing around we were shown inside. We'd been given the family room, which had a massive bed on the ground floor as well as a second level with two more double beds. Not much use to us, but nice ... read more

South America » Peru » Arequipa » Chivay March 23rd 2017

David here... Our next stop in Peru was Chivay. When we looked at places we wanted to go, Colca Canyon was high on the list, next after the Sacred Valley. On a map it looked a straightforward onward journey south from Cusco. However our research showed that the route was not 'normal' in Peru, most people going the other way round or going via Arequipa, which would mean back tracking. We found one tour company - 4M Express - that offered the Cusco to Chivay route on a Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday (with the Chivay to Cusco journey going on Monday, Wednesday and Friday). We booked the journey with 4M about a month in advance at a cost of $60 each, so quite expensive. But this was a tour and not direct transport so you got ... read more

South America » Peru » Cusco » Cusco March 21st 2017

David here... We arrived back into Cusco around 12:30 at a bus station a 10 minute walk away from Net House B&B. It took us a while to find it as the doorway only had a little card on it and it was shared with another B&B. Once inside we found a clean, small, friendly and pleasant place, with a nice room and access to a shared kitchen. We had plans for the afternoon so dumped our bags and headed out. Our first stop was the Qorikancha site, which was small but pretty good. Some interesting Inca and pre-Inca artifacts on display including skulls that had been purposely deformed from infancy to show status, and others with trepanation holes. This, and all the sights and museums we would be visiting while in Cusco, were included on ... read more

Suzanne here... Not many people stay in Cusco, and Ollantaytambo, and Aguas Caliente and Urubamba. They're all close together so there is no real need to stay at them all. But we had a couple of spare days, and were keen to see as much of the Sacred Valley as we could. Plus we'd figured (wrongly as it turned out) that the accommodation in Olly and Aguas might be a bit shonky and we'd need a treat. In fact both hotels were fine, which left me feeling a bit guilty that I'd spent three times more than usual on a B&B in the middle of nowhere. The collectivo from Ollantaytambo dropped us off ten minutes walk from Lizzy Wasi. It was slightly early but we headed straight there on the off chance, and luckily they let ... read more

Suzanne here... Originally we'd planned to do the Inca Trail hike to Machu Picchu. But the more we looked into it, the more we went off the idea. It seemed like hard work, and very basic accommodation. Yes, we had the same thing on the Inle trek in Burma. But there the trek itself was the whole point. Whereas here, visiting Machu Picchu was the main event. In the end we decided that a visit to MP after a decent nights sleep in a hotel sounded nicer than visiting after a three day trek. The train journey from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes was stunning. Expensive though, at £85 each for a 60k round trip (our last journey of a similar distance had cost £2.50). We'd read that the Vistadome train was worth the extra money, but ... read more

David here... The flight was about an hour, with ample leg room in the emergency aisle seat, more than making up for the last flight. Despite Avianca being a budget airline you still get snacks and a drink and they will try and sit you together unlike another airline we've recently flown with (*cough* Viva *cough* Colombia). We landed at Cusco airport, disembarked and picked up our backpacks in around 30 minutes and were soon leaving the airport to face the taxi scrum. We'd read online a couple of tricks, like avoiding the baggage area 'official' taxi that will charge you 50 soles (£12.50) for the quick journey into town and walking past the next row of taxis at arrivals as while cheaper, will still charge you between 25 and 35 soles depending on what they ... read more
