The main attraction of the coastal town of Mui Ne is the sand dunes. White ones and red ones. We arrived here Sunday afternoon and found a great little hotel with a pool. Very welcome after a long bus journey. The hotel was right on the beach front but the beach or sea wasn't very inviting at all. Probably been to too many beautiful islands recently! We took a short walk along the one road that makes up the town to check out the bars and restaurants so we knew where to go for dinner later that night then spent the rest of the afternoon by the pool. On Monday we joined up with two American girls and hired the hotel's jeep and driver to take us to the sand dunes about 25 kms away. First ... read more

We've been in Saigon for 4 days now, it's an amazing place and a complete contrast to the laid back islands we were on recently. We had a lot of 'jobs' to do here, sort out a bus ticket to take us north, internet (again) much needed laundry and shopping to replenish toileteries that are running low. It's a great place to do all these things, in between sightseeing and just 'hanging out' in street bars. We've managed to get a fast internet so I've added lots of photos instead of me rambling on I'll let the photos do it. The traffic here is completly crazy, but you do get used to the constant beeping from all around you and learn to ignore it. Crossing the road is an art, basically you just walk and they ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » Southeast » Ho Chi Minh City » Cu Chi March 1st 2012

We took the hour and a half bus ride to the Cu Chi Tunnels, they're located 30 kms from Ho Chi Minh City. It is an area where the Viet Cong lived. They dug tunnels to live in to protect themselves during the 1960s/ 70's war with America. The tunnels stretch for for over 200 kms as far as the Cambodian border. The Viet cong set many traps to stop the American soldiers and thus the Americans were unable to flush them out so they turned their artillery and bombers on the area, transforming it to a moonscape. Some of the tunnels have been preserved and visitors are able to get into the narrow openings, the tunnels are accessed by trapdoors hidden on the jungle floor. They were an ingenious system that included living quarters, hospitals ... read more

We arrived in Saigon mid afternoon on Tuesday after our first class flight. We were travelling with Air Asia, a low cost carrier similar to Ryan Air. The difference is that they are much more relaxed about the rules. When we checked in we omitted to ask for seats together. Didn’t think it was necessary as we were early for checking in. When we looked later Stan was on seat 9F and I was on 23F. Not too big a deal as we’re seasoned travellers. While we waited at the gate to board I noticed an official at a computer but not really doing anything (a common occurrence in Asia) I showed him our seat numbers and asked if there was any chance they could be changed, not really expecting to get anywhere. He looked and ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Wilayah Persekutuan » Kuala Lumpur » China Town February 27th 2012

Kuala Lumpur is becoming as familiar to us as Bangkok. The great thing about familiarity is that it's easy getting around on public transport. Kuala Lumpur has some of the best transport systems we've come across so far, the mono rail and the light rapid transport train take you around the city without the need for roads and thus traffic. It's also the best place for cheap Air Asia flights to other parts on S. E. Asia. This is the reason we're back here again. Tomorrow we fly to Ho Chi Ming City in Vietnam for our next adventure. After a 7 hour frustrating bus ride we finally arrived here. The journey was supposed to take 5 hours but they omitted to tell us that there would be a 50 kilometre detour to drop a group ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Penang » George Town February 25th 2012

The island of Penang is just off the west coast of Malaysia, although it’s an island it can be reached by the one of the longest bridges in Asia. At 13.5 kilometres it spans the Straits of Melaka. We arrived here after a 4-hour bus journey; a lot of the time was taken up by queuing up at immigration on the border between Thailand and Malaysia. Our mini bus, for once, was not overloaded. We, well Stan mostly, spent most of the 4 hours chatting to a Canadian fellow traveller; he was a frequent visitor to Penang and knew of a clean cheap safe guesthouse. He’d reserved a room but luckily for us they had another vacant room so we were sorted without having to tramp around. It’s always good to follow someone’s recommendation. Looking ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Lipe February 16th 2012

Next stop: The island of Ko Lipe; it’s more or less the most southerly island before the Malaysian border. We left the island of Ko Ngai on Friday and headed to Satun, we’d been told that it was possible to go to the Tamalang Pier there and get our Thai visa renewed so we figured once that was done we could go off to Ko Lipe but I was sceptical. The boat to Ko Lipe left at 12.30 so in case of any hitches we arrived at the pier soon after 8am on Saturday morning. I was right things weren’t that simple, the only way to renew the visas was to get stamped out of Thailand, go to a destination in Malaysia, then come back and get stamped into Thailand again. The problem here was that ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand February 10th 2012

Feb 9th “The pretty island of Ko Ngai has a squeaky white sand beach that stretches along the Eastern coast and virtually the whole island is ringed by coral and sparkling clear water.” That was the description of this island in our Lonely Planet 2004 guide. Sounded idyllic so we decided to make it our next destination. We left the island of Ko Jum early morning and after several modes of transport over land and on the sea and an overnight stop at Pak Meng we have arrived on the island of Ko Ngai. Pak Meng, the little town from where we got the ferry had a beautiful view from the coastline of several tall lime karsts rising up from out of the sea. We were hoping the island would ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Jam February 5th 2012

This island and it’s laid back way of life is really beginning to grow on us. Alan, an American we met at our resort, was renting the tree house there so of course we just had to climb up and see it. It’s right at the front overlooking the beach. From his veranda there was an amazing view of the many neighbouring islands. A perfect spot to watch sunset. I don’t think I could take the ladder on a regular basis though especially as there is no bathroom so after ‘ lights out’ it could be tricky. I don’t suppose Tarzan had that worry, mind you he wouldn’t have been sat in a bar drinking Chang beer until 10pm! Today we made the crazy decision to swim to the closest island, it didn’t look too ... read more

Back to Nature I am sitting typing this blog on the veranda of our wooden hut, but it will be a few days before you get to read it. Why? There is no electricity on the island. . The only noise I can hear are the cicadas humming in the trees, birds chirping and the gentle sound of the sea lapping the shore 50 metres away. An occasional long-tail can be hear purring and of course the friendly geckos. Our bungalow has a 4-poster bed, adorned by a highly prictical mosquito net, a set of three wooden shelves and a fan. A cold-water shower and a toilet with no flush make up the bathroom. Our bungalow operators have a generator they switch on from 6pm to 10.30pm. It’s then a mad rush to get the I ... read more
