Now all our plans were in place it was time for some chillout time. We jumped on a bemo (small bus) and headed to Pintu Kotu a small bay about half an hours drive from the city. After waiting for an hour at in the bemo station gradually waiting for the bemo to fill up with locals and their shopping - namely huge washing up bowls filled with wet fish, produce and other evil smelling stuff we set off. There was barely an inch of spare space. Ten minutes into the journey, the driver who was chain smoking, pulled over and loaded two huge platic containers of petrol into the open bus doorway, petrol was leaking from the caps and hot ash was dropping onto it from the cigarette precariously balanced on his bottom lip as ... read more

We've reached the halfway mark of our travels and it's time for the difficult bit. We will need to speak Indonesian as much as possible and expect to get stared at a lot as very few Europeans venture as far as Maluku where the Banda Islands are. We flew to Makassar, Sulawesi on 3rd January, the hope had been to get the Pelni Ferry to our final destination the Bandas. It had been impossible to get a schedule before hand so we had to just hope we wouldn't have to wait too long. Unfortunately when we arrived in Makkasar it turned out that a ferry had left just 3 days ago and the next one was probably on the 22nd but no guarantees. Makassar was not a place to hang about, a very noisy, dirty city ... read more

After the heat of the city we needed to get away for a while. We took the train to the Forestry research of Malaysia, 16 kilometres out of the city centre. All went well until we got of the train and needed a taxi to take us the last few kilometres, no taxis to be seen. Eventually we thumbed a lift and got one within a few minutes by a nice English speaking lady. She was very helpful and took us right to the gate. It turned out she had a daughter attending Nottingham University. It's a small world. The trek through the forest was hard and sweaty but interesting, unfortunately the canopy walkway was closed due to maintenance work. Leaving the forest we had similar taxi problems and the sky turned a deep grey colour, ... read more

Happy New Year! We are now in Kuala Lumpur and are looking forward to the celebrations here tonight. We had a mammoth few days of travel to get here. As we were told the weather has been bad here, we saw quite a lot of flooded fields as we travelled down, we spent 2 days on the island of Langawi, Malaysia to break the journey but it rained all the time. So we certainly did the right thing staying where we were for Christmas. New Year update. Just a quick update to show you the fireworks, it was a crazy affair with millions of people at the Petronis Towers. ... read more

CHANGE OF PLAN. After speaking to someone who'd left the area further south where we'd planned to go we changed our plans. It's been raining there for weeks now and it seems there's no let up. The island we are on is beautiful and so we thought 'why leave? the weather is good here.' As someone said 'why go in search of paradise when you've already found it?' We changed accommodation as ours had been booked by someone for Christmas. I was a bit up set for a while but fortunately we found an even better one, large, with various items of furniture (most unusual here) and for less than ten pounds a day. It's right on a beautiful quiet stretch of the beach. We have lots of friendly people for neighbours mostly from Europe. The ... read more

we have travelled south down the peninsular of Thailand and we're now on a small island off the West Andaman coast. This island is simply gorgeous, white sand crescent shaped bay with a scattering of bungalows but otherwise undeveloped. Everywhere you look butterflies flutter about. Hornbill birds sqwark from the treetops and crickets sing you to sleep. The only roads are just a metre wide meaning the only transport are mopeds. We've rented a superb bungalow up on the hillside overlooking the bay. We've had a few visitors namely a nine inch gecko, a frog who loves our toilet, and a homing snail who comes back every time I sweep it off the verandah! We've hired a moped for the duration, th and visited the next bay last night where we bumped into Avalina from Finland ... read more

We have just spent 6 days on the island of Ko Chang, a 5 hour bus ride from Bangkok. We jumped off the ferry and straight into a 'taxi' to the south of the island. We ended up in a room on stilts straight off the pier , we could see the sea through the floor boards! We spent a couple of days on the beach nearby but the sea seemed dirty so moved to a smaller island - Ko Wai. This would have been the perfect tropical island paradise but due to an exeptionally high tide there was virtually no beach, the sea was much clearer and we managed to go snorkelling at last. We spent one night in a VERY basic hut then, after a morning on the beach and in the sea we ... read more

We delayed going to Ko Chang until tomorrow as we were told it was the King's 83rd birthday so big celebrations here. Fireworks were let off over the river and roads were closed as thousands of lanterns were set off in his honour. I have never seen so many people in one place, think every single Thai person was here! Mostly wearing pink shirts for some reason. Men and women alike. Enjoy the photos we really are off to a beach tomorrow!... read more

I've lost count of how many times we've been to Bangkok, but it still holds a kind of exotic excitement. We used to think it was crazy here but as we've just returned from Hanoi it seems positivly civillised here. The weather is hot hot hot! (sorry you people back in the UK in the snow) We are taking advantage of fast internet but hope to go to an island soon for some beach time so the blogs may dry up for a while. Still love to hear from you all back home, keeps me in touch!... read more

We have quite a few family and friends getting married soon so this blog is dedicated to them. Seems like we hit on wedding fever in Hanoi . We came across several weddings all taking place around the lake. Brides everywhere you looked were having their hair and make up done at the side of the lake. All seemed very grand affairs so thought I'd add a few photos. ... read more
