This is a return trip to Fort Desoto - interestingly this destination has the highest stastitics on the blog by almost 3-1. We love the water front campsites, the great bird watching, the award-winning beach, and the proximity to restaurants and attractions. We made our requisite stop at Billy's Crab House in Tierra Verde, on the access road to Fort Desoto Pinnellas County Park, for stones crabs and scallops. Stone crabs have just come in to season. They take a little work; but are very good - especially when served hot with drawn butter. A birthday party of 40 something fun people joined us at the third floor open air bar for a drink ($1.99 Margaritas) and cool music by a guy our age named Jeff playing and singing songs from our era. The Gulf of ... read more

Our stop at Jekyll Island was unplanned. We had a little extra time before our reservation at Fort Desoto County Campground in the Tampa Bay area, took a look at the map, did a search for camping on Jekyll Island and headed toward the ocean. Lucky find for us! Blackbeard (the fierce pirate Edward Teach) is said to have buried his swag here and later it was a clubby winter retreat for JP Morgan and his pals, the Firestones until 1942. These guys knew their real estate. Tropical & beautiful! Jekyll is the smallest of Georgia's "Golden Isles." Its size makes it easy to cover on a loop road dotted with historic interpretive signage, we have to go back another time and take the time to absorb it well. We bought a self -conducted guided tour ... read more

We made a three day stop to visit the North Carolina DeVoes in Lake Norman in the Charlotte area. Lake Norman is lovely and our weather was great. We parked in Ray & Cindy’s driveway driveway for a few days. C&R and family are great hosts. Ray, Jr. made a wonderful welcoming dinner - Chicken Parm! C& R Took us to our first Trader Joe's in downtown Charlotte on our way to Elise's XC Meet. I can see why these no frills, compact Trader Joe's stores have caught on. Next day, C&R took us to scrounge for great suff at a wonderful old factory mill, which is now a 400 plus vendor antique center in Cornelius. We followed up with Asian fusion at Eez in a charming “life-style community” aka an updated version of an old ... read more

Our 2010-2011 "Trek South" has begun. Ballston Lake to Fancy Gap to Jekyll Island and eventually to south western Florida. We'll fly home for Holidays and return in February. Our first “stop” on the 2010-2011 trek south was Americana icon, Fancy Gap, VA. To re-cap, day one had us southbound on I-88 and through Pennsylvania, on day two we went through a tiny slice-of Maryland and a little chunk of West Virginia. The drive through Virginia was beautiful - next time, we might try Route 11, which parallels the interstate and might offer more "local color." Except for Fancy Gap we were doing “non stop,” long driving days. made more intense and tiring for Wes, the driver beautifully handling the 34’ motor home with a Jeep in tow. It was more of a breeze for me, ... read more

Grandchildren and grandparents LOVE Lake George RV Park! It's near the Rt 149 turn off from Northway (I87) Exit 20 on Route 9 near the outlets. With Beth and her family in Rutland, and Wes and I having Vivian visiting for her vacation while her parents were in Ireland, it was perfect. A free movie one night, a naturalist educator with live birds of prey, a snapping turtil, and a snake one morning, a snack bar with ice cream, a wonderful pool, game room, and a great playground were among the amenities we availed ourselves to! These cousins don't see each other a great deal; so it was a nice bonding time. I had lots of crafts and books stowed in the RV, and all of the attracions of Lake George, Great Escape, Outlet Shopping, tons ... read more

We feel so lucky when our travels take us to visit relatives. Two recent long island road trips (and photos from last year's Memorial Day Weekend trip when the Vermonters were with us) were no exception. The northshore, characterized "The Gold Coast" by Nelson DeMille in a novel of the same name, is really golden. Great little towns, harbors, beaches, independent restaurants and shops and, it's Vivian's home. Getting to Long Island, we mostly use the NYS Thruway, the Throgs Neck Bridge, the LIE and the Northern Turnpike; however, we have crossed back and forth to Port Jefferson from Bridgeport, CT via a ferry boat, and once even took the Orient Point Ferry to New London. On the Ferry to New London, we passed by another Nelson DeMille landmark "Plum Island." Who knows what goes on ... read more

We’re heading home and made a last minute adjustment to the itinerary. We're skipping Gettysburg this year and heading from Lexington to Cincinnati, Columbus, Cleveland and along Lake Erie toward Buffalo and New York's Finger Lakes wine region. We “dry camped” at a Flying J Truck Stop in Ashtabula, Ohio, along with close to a dozen other RVers, mostly "seasonal re-locators" (one new term for “snow birds”) heading back to Ontario, Quebec, New York and other points north. Decent takeout pizza from the Flying J! First stop is Cayuga Marina and Campground. Getting in with a hairpin turn and a sharp incline doesn’t make for a great arrival; so we drove on … until we were passed by a vehicle following us. The driver somehow had intuited that we were “goin’ to Gils,” and kindly offered ... read more

“Redbud Season” in Kentucky is like “Leaf Peeping Season” in Vermont. Special tours, designated routes, photo ops galore! This is our fourth time to stay at the RV Park at Kentucky Horse Park. Obviously, it suits us. The actual Horse Park will be the venue for the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games from Sept. 25- Oct. 10. Equestrians from around the world will compete in eight sports including jumping and a 100 mile cross country endurance ride. The horse park is worth a visit just for the exhibitry, which includes daily live appearances by New York Bred Derby and Preakness winner, Funny Cide, who was born at McMahon of Saratoga, making Joe & Anne McMahon the breeders of record . We had a surprise visit by our great niece and nephew, Madison and Aiden McMahon ... read more

It is a very early spring in Nashville with wisteria, forsythia, redbuds, and all manner of fruit trees in full bloom a little prematurely. We are at the Nashville KOA for three days. The sign calls it an "award-winning" RV Park and the honor seems deserved! There's even a little opera house here where KOA people can attend fun concerts FREE! The restaurant, Cock of the Roost, is next to the RV Park. Interesting place and the food great, home-style, southern cooking. I had a basket of catfish, shrimp and chicken with hushpuppies and tons of fried potatoes. The sides included a cast iron skillet bread that the server "flipped high in the air" at the table. We didn’t notice collard greens were on the menu; but a nearby table got them served in small black ... read more

New Orleans Day 3 and 4 "Laissez Le Bon Temps Rouler" New Orleans is indeed a city for good times AND ... great architecture, great music, great food, great history and attractions, and more. Every place has a story to tell, and New Orleans has many . The resilience and positive attitude of the local people is amazing... Bravo to the indomitable sprits of those who returned! On Saturday, we took a late afternoon shuttle to the French Quarter from Pontchartrain Landing RV Park. We had devised a rain plan to have dinner at Ralph & KaCoo’s on Toulouse St. across from where the 4pm shuttle leaves passengers off. Great meal; except they had run out of oysters! No biggie, the server couldn’t have extended herself more graciously to make up for the missing bivalves (free ... read more
