This is our first visit ever to New Orleans. We came armed with tons of advice, our AAA Tour Book, four or five maps, walking shoes, summer clothes and the SONY digital camera. Water bottles, sunglasses, sunscreen, a sweater, coin change (recommended for the trolley) and a back pack are options worth considering. We headed for Cafe du Mond where I got powdered sugar all over my black pants from the still hot beignets (not complaining they were delish)! Then a three hour Gray Line Tour. This included one of the famous cemeteries, Katrina devastation (still) and evidences of recovery, the Garden District, City Park with a wonderful sculpture garden which we saw and an art museum (saved for next trip), Magazine St., the business district, and virtually the whole city. It was in an A/C ... read more

Bellingrath Gardens, fishing camp turned into gracious estate of Coca Cola mogul, Walter Bellingrath, located along the Fowl River in Theodore, Alabama, is just another reason to listen to people you meet in a bar! A casual conversation on the “top Deck” at the Pelican Reef on Dauphin Island led us here. Let the photos speak! Azaleas, cherry blossoms, and paper whites are in bloom; while gardeners scurry about planting Easter lilies and blue hydrangeas from Bellingrath’s own vast nursery, in time for the Easter egg roll on the great lawn. The garden tour was $11 each; we declined the boat cruise and house tour in the interest of time. Wide paths, unobtrusive (but functional) handrails, and alternate routes (when stairs are involved) show a great deal of thought in planning access for everyone. You exit ... read more

The Ride from Top Sail throutgh Pensacola to the Dolphin Island Ferry took us past places we had been to before and held a few nice surprises; namely that an area that had been so devasted by Katrina that a 12 mile stretch of road along the beaches had finally re-opened, and the seemingly underpromoted but well developed resort communities along Alabama's Gulf Coast! I keep forgetting to mention SHOPPING; mostly because we don’t shop much when on vaca. However, just about every brand in the USA has an outlet between Route 30A and Destin. There is definietly something for mama to do while papa is playing golf or fishing and the kiddies are at a waterslide park or playing mini golf. We didn’t stop in Destin this time; previous blogs have information on the waterside ... read more

We're so excited about Dauphin Island in Alabama and getting to New Orleans with enough time to see the sights; that we're leaving Top Sail early. This park is so gracious and didn't penalize us for the cancelled part of the reservation. We didn't get to the Red Bar at Grayton Beach; we missed stopping in at Sally's Back Side, a fun and funky club behind a convenience store on 30 A. Catch them next year. But before leaving, we had a great day for NOT getting sunburned on Top Sail Beach and a wonderful dinner at Tango Cafe. ... read more

The Schooner had her first ferry boat crossing across Mobile Bay from Fort Morgan to get to Dauphin Island where we thought we would laze for a day or so resting up for the Big Easy! Dauphin has some great attractions. It was the site, at Fort Gaines, of the Civil War Battle of Mobile. This is where Admiral Farragut is quoted as saying, "Damn the Torpedoes - full speed ahead!" as he went on to capture the Fort and the Confederate fleet. The campgrounds are convenient from the ferry slip and within walking distance to the Estuarium, a fascinating educational attraction with a great collection of live and preserved specie that inhabit the Mobile Bay Estuary. We had the pleasure of observing two volunteer docents interacting with school children who were so engaged you could ... read more

Heading out of St, George Island on our way to Top Sail RV Park, Santa Rosa Beach, scores of oystermen, their small boats brimming with oysters, come into view as we cross the bay. Heading west on Route 98, we skipped the sweet town of Apalachicola - been there and loved it and rolled on to Port St. Joe and a brief stop near the Marina. We had once stayed at a State Park on St. Joe Peninsula and loved its untamed beauty. We have often passed the intriguing looking Toucan’s at Mexico Beach but the timing is never right for a meal stop - too early for lunch and too late for breakfast. Some things have to be saved for next tiem! Passing through Panama City we are reminded that it’s a popular “spring break ... read more

This part of the trip is all about sand dunes and oysters and meeting up with Dave & Barb who are coming from where we are heading - New Orleans, Nashville, and points homeward! Leaving (Carrabelle) town, our timing wasn’t right for lunch at “The Fisherman’s Wife’s” cute little red lunch cart or at funky and delish Two Al’s. We posted previous blogs on Carrabelle’s WW II museum and reference to how infantry was trained here for the Normandy Landing and how POW’s from Germany were incarcerated in a work camp/ prison here. Interesting history! We made a provision stop at the Carrabelle IGA where they sell fishing poles and tackle along with milk, eggs and Tide. We made our way along Route 98 to Eastpoint which surely has seen better days. A handsome arched bridge ... read more

We have a very cool itinerary to bring us home from our 2009-2010 winter RV trip. Our direct flight from Albany to Tampa was uneventful. Our drive up I75 to Ocala wet. We "dry camped" in the wet weather and woke up to a sunny day with a half dozen horses staring into the RV. On The Road We've learned to love those dotted lines on AAA maps. They indicate scenic byways, and Route 27 from Ocala to Williston is just that! The drive is beautiful. It’s spring and shrubs like "red buds" are in bloom as part of the landscaping of lovely horse farms all along the way. Going beyond Williston (neat and orderly) the scene becomes “USA at its rural, sincere best.” Ranching, logging, fishing, oystering and shrimping are the rugged industries. There are ... read more

Our eight-day trip to Ireland with Kevin McKrell and the Donnybrook Fair band never got "blogged." So, here, from the archive for your St. Paddy's Day enjoyment, is a brief description of that trip and a few of the pictures we took. We were with Barb and Dave. It was Barb and my first trip to Europe. And, a great start it was! Here is an archived story and pics from that Fall 2003 trip. The notes are itinerary notes from our tour leader, Kevin McKrell! Yes, that Kevin McKrell. We were traveling with the "band" with "sessions" every night! Kevin's notes: When we land in Shannon we head first for Killarney. Killarney has a bit of everything. We are situated in the town centre which makes quick walking to the shops, pubs and music sessions. The first ... read more

A Long Island Surprise - Joanne DeVoe, June 23-24, 2004 This is one from the "archives." Before we started the travel blog. We have heard about how nice “The End” of Long Island is, but never took it seriously. Misconceptions regarding traffic, rude people, over commercialization, and the like have lingered like a lead balloon. “Misconceptions” is the operative word. We wound our way back home to Ballston Lake from Long Island by first heading for Montauk and eventually the Ferry from Green Port to New London, CT. Fortunately, we missed the turn for the old Montauk Highway, the scenic, ocean road. Fortunate because, if we had taken the scenic road, we might have pulled in at Gurney’s or one of the other lovely established resorts along that stretch and missed our delightful stay east of ... read more
