South America » Ecuador » South » Cuenca June 8th 2009

This blog is more for pictures of Cuenca! The bus arrived late into the middle class town of Cuenca on Saturday at about 9.30. From the bus terminal, we went straight to the hostel to drop off our bags and to hit the streets to see what we could find to eat. It was Saturday night, so the town was popping with young Ecuadorian cats lined up outside this club to go get there groove on. This town and the way the people are dressed reminded me a lot of back home. The instyle clothes, the tangerine street lights, and the advertisements. The next day we hoofed it around for about 4 hours to check out the town and highlights. It was Sunday so many of the shops were closed excepted for the open air markets, ... read more

South America » Ecuador » South » Machala June 6th 2009

Time for another, to go forwards or backwards. I´ll go backwards through time bc the events of yesterday are notable. Yesterday was our last morning in Mancora and what laid ahead was a 2 hour ride to the border of Ecuador. I spent the morning getting packed and reading on the balcony over looking the beach with the soft breeze dancing off the pages of 3 men and a raft. I needed the relaxation before we hit the border. The tour guide was not sure what time our bus left from the border of Ecuador to get to Cuenca, but he thought it was at 2. Issue number one was that the hoopdie of a van didn´t arrive until 12.30. And on the way to the border we made a few stops so the passenger could ... read more

South America » Peru » Piura » Máncora June 5th 2009

Mancora was a place that provoked thought. One night after returning from dinner and listening to the waves break on the beach I wrote this... The relics of time passed through the glimmer of a Star, glistening softly off the currents of time. An ocean is all the same as the tide comes in and retreats to safer grounds. In Mancora, can life continue to be this simple? The sand perfectly lines the feet from a soccer game played through a sunset. Passer-byers lend a foot as stray balls make there way to the ocean. What is a two week pay check? What is living off of mommies and daddies bank accounts? The night bus strikes pot holes consistently as it rumbles to a halt along a town only described in books. Need a taxi is ... read more

South America » Peru » Arequipa » Colca Canyon May 31st 2009

I only posted about M.P. a couple days ago but it has been over a week since I was there. That is my way of saying I am behind in keeping up with this blog. The great news is that I am about 98% healthy with only a runny nose. Feeling almost a hundred percent makes the trip so much more enjoyable and pleasurable. Leave Cusco, we took a plane flight to Arequipa which was beyond turbulant. I would almost consider it a rollercoaster ride due to the amount of times I lost my stomach. Listening to the structure of the plane crackel was a bit unnerving, but I am living to write this so all ended well. Arequipa , the second largest won in Peru, was mainstream and set toward tourism. The people were nice ... read more

South America » Peru » Cusco » Inca Trail May 23rd 2009

Sunday afternoon I hopped on a bus from Cusco to Ollantaytambo, the last town before the beginning of the Inca Trail. I sat outside with some of the group to enjoy the scenary and soaring lush mountains from the valley below. Before we arrived, we got to the town we stopped at this little shanty that produced corn beer. I didn´t care for it much, but I am sure it is an acquired taste since I´ve never had anything like it. We also played this game known as Toad, in english of course, where the object was to throw these larger than coin like objects into the toads mouth or surrounding holes. Needless to say, the two top scores where by females. After we finished the beer and games, we headed into town. The town is ... read more

Where to start...the bus rides, boat rides, steep mountain inclines leading to wide open valleys, inclining streets that need an escalator. So much has happened since the last post that it´s more of an overview than an indepth description of towns, the people, and personal feelings. Hopefully the pictures will pick up where I left things out. If you want to know, email me and I´ll try to be more indepth. I didn´t share all the pictures bc there was so many and this computer is dark tinted so I can´t really tell which pictures I chose. From La Paz, I took a 5-6 hour bus ride to Puno, Peru through glorious mountain ranges with crops dispersed throughout and Bolivians hard at work tending their crops. Their homes are nowhere in sight, so who knows how ... read more

South America » Bolivia » La Paz Department » La Paz May 11th 2009

Wake up! Stand Up! Hold on it´s all in Spanish. I have some down time before I meet the group I´ll be spending the next 5 weeks with. How much to say and how much is important for you the reader? Let´s start off with La Paz, it is in a giant bowl. When you arrive you start at the top (El Alto) then travel down into La Paz resting at 13,000 ft. I couldn´t have arrived at a better time, the sun was rising over the Andres Mtns and glistening off the tangerine structures (the majority of the houses on the hillside are a tangerine color and once down in the bowl you have your standard gray dull stone). The temp was close to freezing but it didn´t hinder the street vendors from putting out ... read more

What will time have on special over the next 5 weeks? The adventure is happening; it is finally coming to fruition. The emotions are bouncing from the extremely thrilled side to the worry and the horrible ‘what-if’ scenarios. Ultimately it is an adventure and an experience that has been a long time coming. Throughout college I knew all I wanted to do was travel and see the world. Originally, Europe was beeping on my radar but, as time has elapsed, South America is the calling. Maybe it is the history and the historic culture it poses. This is enough for the first blog, lets wait in anticipation for the next one for it will take place somewhere far away from California and with a little luck even contain pictures!!! ... read more
