Wed Feb 13 Well yesterday was another busy sea day but a good one. The ship was really rocking and rolling yesterday morning and it woke me up a bit early. I was going to update the blog but it was moving a bit too much to chance something falling onto the computer (the remote few down and hit me at one point). The waves were only 15-20 feet but they were longer than those from last week so it was pretty rough. There weren’t too many of us at the 10:00 lecture on Shakelton. It was very interesting though. One of the speakers (Bernard) actually met many of the survivors when he was invited to join the Antarctica club after his first expedition in 1947. During the lecture the captain came on to update us ... read more

Mon 2/11/08 Well we got back earlier than I thought from Torres del Paines (Blue Towers) so I did some laundry and will try to get a post in before dinner. The show last night was better than we thought so we didn’t have to walk out. It was almost hard to believe it was the same man but he was at least watchable this time. The singer was as good as the first time. The group of entertainer’s we’ve had were all leaving the ship today and we’re supposed to get a new bunch so we’ll see. We had a nice leisurely dinner since the show was beforehand. Our waiter was not there on Fri night because they said he had a headache but the real story was his roommate was sick and quarantined for ... read more

Sun 2/10/08 Well whoever said that Sea Days are lazy or restful hasn’t been on this cruise! Yesterday continued our busy schedule as we headed out of Antarctica into the Drake Passage and onto Cape Horn. We started the day with a lecture on Ushuaia and Bingo and after a quick lunch it was time for a lecture on Punta Arenas and then Capt Pat’s talk on where we actually did go in Antarctica. He reviewed Plan A again and then said we actually did Plan H and had probably seen more things not on plan A than were on Plan A. It will be interesting to compare the map when I get my copy. Because of cruising the Cape our shows were at 4:30 and 6:45 so my tablemates and I decided to go to ... read more

I’ll check it later and add in anything I may have missed. It was a wonderful 4 days in Antarctica but not sure there’s any way to really describe it and I’m sure the pictures won’t do it justice. I’ll try to summarize each day below but will need to update some of the actual places after the Ice Captains presentation this afternoon when he’ll go over where we actually did go vs the plan. It... read more

Tue Feb 5 Well we've still got access this morning so will post another short note. We're just 5 hours out from Elephant Island and should be seeing our first icebergs in a couple of hours. Have seen some dolphins this morning from the Lido and they've just seen a whale to the other end of the Explorers Lounge where I'm sitting. The Explorations Cafe is totally full and I couldn't find a chair there. The seas are much calmer today and almost everyone is out and about. We just had a lecture on Globalization and have another Antarctica briefing after lunch. No luck at Bingo again today. Last night I had dinner in the Pinacle with several people from the cc board and it was very nice. There was only 1 other group in there ... read more

Antarctica » Antarctica February 4th 2008

Mon Feb 4 Well this may be a quick post since I decided not to bring my laptop upstairs. Unfortunately the weatherman was right and the conditions in Pt. Stanly were not good so we did not get to stop there today. I was pretty sure we wouldn't when I woke up and saw the waves out my window. I headed up to the Lounge at 7:15 but didn't bother to bring my stuff. The captain came on shortly after and said they'd have to cancel. Wish they'd have done it earlier but they didnt' want to wake up those on later tours I guess. The seas were at high (20-27 feet) at that point and 50 gale winds. The seas after that and thru lunch were at very hight (27-42 feet) so it's been an ... read more

South America » Falkland Islands February 3rd 2008

Sun 2/3/08 Well I’m up another $10 from a short time in the casino last night. Hopefully that will continue later today. We had another nice dinner and one of the ships officers joined us. Turned out he had spent a year in the same area of New Hampshire as my tablemates so they had lots to discuss. After that we went to the show which was just the singers from the cast singing older songs but very good. We gained an hour last night so I’m up a bit early but will head up to mass in a few minutes. Today is another educational day with 3 more lectures including the first one from the Ice Captain. I’ll add more to this later today. The first lecture today was from the woman on the Antartica ... read more

I think I finally got some of the photos uploaded to webshots so hopefully this link will work. a href="http://travel.webshots.com/album/562274827nGgAiS"img src="http://thumb3.webshots.net/t/62/562/0/63/26/2491063260081391383FhunSd_th.jpg" alt="Image hosted by Webshots.com"/abrby a href=http://community.webshots.com/user/SharonNee SharonNee/a Sat Afternoon Feb 1 Well have a bit of time before I need to get ready for dinner (our 2nd formal night) so thought I’d post a few details on some of the lectures we’ve had (3 today so I’m feeling very educated right now). Earlier this week we had presentations by the same naturalist we had on our Alaska trip last year. On this trip he’s giving port overviews that include history of the area etc. He also does commentary on the decks as we leave port. Warren Salinger is the lecturer on board. He first sailed HAL at the ... read more

Sat Feb 1 Can’t believe it’s Saturday already but that’s what the rug in the elevator says (they change them everyday). It’s been a busy few days in ports but we are now at sea for 2 days heading towards the Falkland Islands. I think I left off on Wed afternoon so will try to remember the rest of that day. It was another day of lectures on Montevideo and Brazil that were interesting and then another small turnout for Bingo. However, I did win the first game and $52 so that was a good start. I also won $30 on a slot machine that night. Because of the early tours the next day the show was before dinner so I met Anne and Hugh (the couple from New Hampshire) in the lounge. It was ... read more

South America » Brazil January 30th 2008

Wed Jan 30 Well I never did get a chance to post yesterday. Busy Sea Day and the one time I checked the link was down. So I’ll try to catch up this morning. After we sailed on Monday we had a nice dinner and then I went to the show with one of my tablemates (Thersa from Cincinnati). It was a Cast show about various eras as if they were on the radio. Typical show but pretty good. The leads are very good singers and we have no idea how the dancers were able to dance the way the ship was moving but they held on pretty good. Yesterday was our first sea day and everyone was ready for a day to catch up from flights and long tours in Rio. I know I slept ... read more
