When I checked internet access earlier today it was still available so going to try and get the entry for yesterday and this morning written and posted. We docked in Kristiansund (not Kristiansand) yesterday morning but our tour wasn’t until 12:30 so we had a late breakfast and then Mom, Erin, and Dennis went out to do some shopping while I uploaded pictures. We met for lunch about 11:30 and then all four of us headed down for our Averoy and Atlantic Road tour. The elevators were running slowly and the gangway was steps not a ramp so took a while for Erin to get down. By then someone else had taken the front seat so she ended up in the Tour Guides seats and the rest of us were in 3 rows behind each other. ... read more

Europe » Norway » Western Norway » Bergen July 21st 2009

Well today we were in Bergen and the weather was supposed to clear up but it was cloudy most of the day with a few sprinkles but no real showers. Dennis and I took the 8 hr Queen of the Fjords tour which we both enjoyed as we had a fantastic guide. It started with a tour around Bergen which has a lot of historical houses and buildings. We then headed out to the country including a ferry crossing, stop at an old church, and on to Hardinger Fjord where we stopped at a hotel for a very nice buffet lunch. We’d all be a bit concerned since it was supposed to be a traditional lunch but there was plenty of variety and it was all very good. We then headed over to a waterfall and ... read more

Sorry Mom kept me out late so didn’t have a chance to post last night and only have a few minutes now since I have an early excursion. Yesterday was another sea day so looks like our routine is going to be mass at 8 followed by breakfast in the Dining Room on sea days with the other Sharon. The priest was a bit late (the crew member who helps had to call him and he said he was taking a leisurely bath). He’s very nice however and the 5 of us at the daily mass are enjoying it. We then checked out the laundry area just down the hall from our cabin so Mom could do some laundry while I went up to what was supposed to be a lecture on tundra. However, they were ... read more

Europe » Norway July 19th 2009

Today we were in Oslo our first stop in Norway. Mom and I had been here in 2001 on the Baltic trip but it was a new port for Erin and Dennis. Last trip Mom, Dad, Jim, and I went to the Olympic Ski Jump (the one featured in the old Wide World Of Sports where the skier falls from it), the Norske Outdoor Folke Museum (where they have old houses and buildings from all over Norway), and the Resistance Museum. This trip we had scheduled the Hadeland Glass Factory and Viking Boat Museum. So we had an early breakfast in the Lido then headed to the Queen’s Lounge just before 9 to get our blue stickers. There was only one bus for this tour and it wasn’t quite full. Our guide’s name was Jane and ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom July 18th 2009

Today was our first sea day and we kept very busy. Mom and I went to the Dining Room for breakfast after mass with a woman (another Sharon) that we met there. Don’t think I’ll try their blueberry pancakes again. I’ve always thought blueberries were sweet but these were kind of sour. We then headed up to hear the end of the lecture on Oslo before heading up to the Crows Nest for the Cruise Critic Meet and Greet. Probably only 10 of us there but it was funny to find that one couple was from our dinner table since it hadn’t come up at dinner last night. We had a nice talk with everyone then headed down to see if Erin and Dennis were at Trivia but they weren’t. But we were able to find ... read more

Well finally live from the Prinsendam. Both Mom and I got a few hours sleep then were wide awake at midnight for a few hours while it was raining quite hard with some thunder. Even tried playing Rhythm Heaven but scores on that a 1 am were not good. We finally got back to sleep and work up just in time for our 6 am wake-up call since we had to have the luggage out by 7. The hotel had a nice breakfast buffet (though seeing a big bowl of baked beans seemed strange to me). We were on the 2nd shuttle to the ship which loaded up about 10 and arrived in Dover about 12:30. Check-in was pretty easy with the only real wait being for the XRay machine. It was very windy when we ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Greater London » London City July 16th 2009

Our flight from Cincinnati to London went very well and we arrived a bit early in London Gatwick. It was a long walk to Immigration but only a 1/2 hr wait when we got there and no wait for luggage or customs. The Driver arranged by HAL was waiting for us with a sign and our names so he grabbed our bags and loaded us in his cab for the 1 1/2 hr trip to London. The traffice was a bit slow but not horrible since it was about 10 when we left the airport. We arrived at the Crowne Plaza St. James about 11:30 but our room wasn't ready until 1. We waited in the courtyard for a while and then the lobby trying to stay awake. so once we got to our room it ... read more

Well it's time to set up my blog for the Top of the World trip since I leave in just a few days. My mother (Shirley) should be at the airport hotel in Portland for her flight to Cincinnati today. I'll be picking her up this evening so she'll have a few days to adjust to part of the time change before we fly to London on Wed night. We'll have Thursday to recover from that before boarding the Prinsendam in Dover on Friday afternoon. We should meet up with my sister Erin and her husband Dennis on the ship since they'll be flying out from Colorado on Thu night. The itinerary for the cruise is below and then we'll spend two more nights in Amsterdam before heading back to Ohio. Hopefully when we get back ... read more

South America » Chile » Valparaíso Region » Valparaíso February 24th 2008

Well it's been a week since they kicked us off the ship kicking and screaming. I've added photos and videos to the previous entries (it works better from home with the faster link!). Our last sea day was busy as usual but we weren't ready to leave so hung onto every moment we could. After our final dinner most of our table stopped by the Explorers lounge for a last drink (ok so Hugh and I did check out the chocolates too!). Just after 11 decided I really did need to go down and finish packing and that took me till after midnight but I got the bags out before the 1 am deadline. I did a bit of shopping on the ship that last day including buying a Lapis necklace with some of the credit ... read more

South America » Chile » Los Lagos » Puerto Montt February 15th 2008

Fri 2/15/08 I can’t believe this trip is all but over. It’s been as good if not better than I expected and though I originally thought it would be a once-in-a-lifetime trip I’m pretty sure I’ll be back if I’m able to in a few years. There’s just so much worth seeing again and lots of things I didn’t have time for in one trip. Antarctica was of course spectacular and my main reason for the trip but South America was much more of a surprise. Chile, Argentina, and Uruguay are not the third world countries most of us expected and in fact have worked their ways to fairly stable economies and most of the areas we visited were safe, friendly, and beautiful. Definitely worth taking a further look at in future trips. Wednesday was another ... read more
