Today I got to Xian in the morning, first I had a wonder around and found an area called the muslim quater it has many market type stalls selling a wide range of goods from food to fake clothes and Rolex's. There is also a wall around the city which you can go up onto it gives you quite a good view of some parts of the city and it is a good walk...I also rented a bike and rode the 14km around the walls twice.... read more

Asia » China » Beijing » Forbidden City November 18th 2008

Today was the first full day in Beijing, it is a really great city defiantly near the top of the list although I’ve still not seen enough to say which cities it is better than. First off I had agreed to meet someone from the train and we would look around the Forbidden City together. I first went to Tiananmen Square, it is very large and is flanked on each side by 2 impressive buildings ‘The Great Hall of the People’ and ‘the National Museum’ in the north is the Forbidden City and in the south is Mao Mausoleum. While waiting for my friend outside the Forbidden City, I was approached by 2 groups of Chinese who wanted to take their picture with me. Which was kind of strange but I guess it’s a Novelty to ... read more

Well today is the last day on the train, We had afew hours last night crossing the border and changing the trains wheels (Russia has smaller tracks than China, this also had to be done at the other end in Belarus...China uses same as Europe) But the border crossing was better as they gave us vouchers for a free breakfast and lunch in the dining car...also everyone was very happy to be at China and finally out of Mongolia/Russia. Passing though China We got a glimpse of the Great wall and saw some nice scenery a lot of the railway is new and looks beautifully engineered there are also a lot of new roads and factories which all look very nice as they are new and fresh looking. Once I got to Beijing I went to ... read more

Asia » Mongolia » Ulaanbaatar November 16th 2008

Today we are travelling across Mongolia. The border crossing between Russia and Mongolia was quite hard it was at night and took many hours so it was quite tiring, you get lots of forms to fill in some of which have no English on…I had to get help from the Chinese girls who knew alittle Mongolian and then let the other English people know. The scenery of Mongolia seems very different from that of Russia, it is much more barren with very few trees there are some nice hills and you get to see quite afew farmers herding cows or sheep along the route. My French Roommate got off at Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia’s Capital where she is planning to stay for 3 months. Also a lot more people got onto the train at Ulaanbaatar and most of ... read more

On the train I am in a Cabin with 4 beds there is just me and a French girl in there, she is living in French Guiana (South America) working as a social worker although she is originally from Paris. In my Wagon there is me, my French roommate, 1 American, 2 French, 2 Swedish, 1 from Norway and 8 Chinese Girls. The train is not very full and most people have space in their cabins this is probably due to the time of the year….alot of people in Moscow and on my way there said it was crazy to do this trip in the winter. Every few hours the train stops and people can get off and buy things from the station, there are small shops on the platform or sometimes there are local people ... read more
