After a lot of walking yesterday we decided to spend today having a bit of a picnic in Central Park. Got up and went down for breakfast - which was not as busy as on Saturday. After breakfast we walked over to the supermarket we had gone past on our way home the night before and bought enough stuff for a picnic. Walked up to the Metro and the guy let us on as he thought we'd not used our tube tickets which was rather nice of him! Got out at Columbus and walked into the park. Hot is not quite the word for it @ 93 or 94 F - with high humidity. We went to the water park and Matthew/Eleanor were in! I dipped my head under the water just to cool down. We ... read more

Got up had the complimentary breakfast which was really good! Then walked down to Battery park along the river via the Clinton Castle (not that Clinton). Hot Hot Hot - no hotter! Then onto the Staten Island Ferry and back again... very good great pictures of the Manhattan skyline and the Statue of Liberty. After the Statue of Liberty we went up town to Rockerfeller Plaza and Saks on 5th avenue and then a lovely little Deli called Toasties. As it ws so hot we went to a bookshop called "The Strand" - 18 miles of books.. still hot even with the air conditioning on. We then went back to the hotel and the Managers reception - which afte the heat was very welcoming. 3 or 4 Amber bocks later we decided rather than doing the ... read more

23rd July 2010 - Socks are the only things that are any good in this packet! And then 8 hours later the got off the plane. This was the total comments of the man who sat next to Catherine on the plane! Everything went to plan. Taxi at homewas 15 minutes early ... which was OK better late than never. Arrived at the airport sailed through check-in and security... though they did take my bag apart but nothing new there! Then as we had lounge passes we went to the lounge where the kids seemed to get through vast numbers of small cans of Pepsi and I had 1 or 2 (Ok 3) beers! Went down for plane and it was a bit delayed (Friday Evening so no real surprise). Flight time of 7 hours ... read more

Europe » Italy July 30th 2009

Got up went in for a swim and then headed to Punto Sabbioni for the boat to Venice - took about 20 minutes to drive to. Arrived at about 12:30 and it was absolutely baked - well into the 30s... Wandered around the historic route in Venice, did the Rialto, St.Marks - stopped in a little Coffee shop for a welcome breather and then continued out into the heat! Rested a while in St. Marks and watched the tours going past - then went back towards the boat. Found a restaurant just of the beaten track that was still expensive but at least not quite as expensive as some of the places we looked at. Pizzas were lovely - though Mafs couldn't have the Cip and Ciop - as it was a bit more upmarket. Supposed ... read more

Up up and over today - went through 2 passes - one at 7400 ft and the St. Gothard at about 7000 before we arrived in Lugano. Loads of great pictures - the kids playing in the snow, mountain ranges higher than Pilatus which we went up yesterday. The Range Rover absolutely purred up and down the mountains - it was like it was a place it wanted to be! Seeing as we drove it up and dwon 2 passes both higher than Mt. Pilatus it did really well. Stayed in Lugano overnight - briefly crossed into Italy and then back into Switzerland - Eleanor and Matthew went swimming in the lake - Eleanor after falling in after paddling... Lugano very nice - but strange Swiss/Italian cross so I'm not sure it nows what it wants ... read more

Today we went up Mount Pilatus - it was an excellent day to go because the sky was blue and there was very little cloud. After another lovely breakfast we walked to the station - a total of about 3 minutes. There was a surprisingly large queue when compared to the other days but it was a Sunday and the weather was superb. The trip is about 40 minutes upward to @7000 feet. I last did it in 1966 with my father when he was the same age I am now. Excellent pictures on the way up - at times the railway hits 48 degrees the steepest cogwheel railway in the world. At the top more stunning pictures. After a few hours we came down and had a bite to eat. Then back to the hotel ... read more

Saturday 25th July Now that was a good sleep! Went to sleep reasonably early particularly for me! Slept right through apart from when Catherine had shut the window and I woke up feeling like I'd been boiled in a bag! Eventually woke the kids up and went down for breakfast which was very good, breads, jams, cold meats, cereals, yogurts, fruit and proper coffee. Our outing today is going to be into Luzern and we have to decide whether to take the boat in and train back or the boat both ways- excellent thats the highligh of my decisions for the day! As the weather was quite good we decided to take the boat both ways.and boarded about 10:15 - this boat stopped at numerous places on Lake Luzern and arrived in Luzern itself around 12:00. ... read more

Europe » France July 24th 2009

So the adventure begins! Left work a little early @ 16:30 but as we had a ferry to catch from Dover at 21:00 I needed to get home, change get in the car and go. Kids and Catherine had done a marvellous job completing all the tasks set them so all I needed to do was turn up, change and exit stage left. Said goodbye to the cat - Stef is coming in to feed it and do the litter tray and we've got one of those great automatic feeders to give it dry food in small portions 3 times a day. Left home at about 18:00 and arrived at Dover @ 20:00 - sorted out the Mastercard which needed unlocking at a NatWest terminal - what a palava - as it had to be done ... read more

Nearly time for the 2009 expedition - after last year in Cornwall with the rather varied weather and dislocated shoulder! we have decided to head into Europe - the tank (Range Rover is ready) and we have booked the ferry but that's about it! We cross on the 24th of July - then 3 weeks away. Intend on being in Switzerland by the end of the first day. Nothing booked yet apart from the ferry - should be a real adventure.... read more
