Waiting for the Ferry
Waiting for the Ferry So the adventure begins!
Left work a little early @ 16:30 but as we had a ferry to catch from Dover at 21:00 I needed to get home, change get in the car and go.
Kids and Catherine had done a marvellous job completing all the tasks set them so all I needed to do was turn up, change and exit stage left. Said goodbye to the cat - Stef is coming in to feed it and do the litter tray and we've got one of those great automatic feeders to give it dry food in small portions 3 times a day.
Left home at about 18:00 and arrived at Dover @ 20:00 - sorted out the Mastercard which needed unlocking at a NatWest terminal - what a palava - as it had to be done at a Nat West ATM - which involved driving around Dover until we found one - spoke to a Fireman and he pointed us in the right direction "Barclay Square" - figures.. Ferry crossing was a little delayed but the Pride of Dover was smooth and fast - brought back memories of my own childhood - crossing in the dark. We arrived
in France about midnight French time and Catherine did the first bit of driving - only 540 miles to our destination at this point! The SatNav seemed a bit special and took us into Belgium, Luxebourg then back into France but it was a good route. Catherine stopped after 150 miles or so and we filled up with Diesel (which at about 1 Euro is 86p a litre so cheeaper than the UK) and I took over and drove until about 5.30 in the morning at which time the Sun was up and we were down to 180 miles to our first destination - just outside Luzern. Stopped at an Aire and got a couple of hours sleep in a bivvy bag.
Started going again at about 9.30 and stopped for some traditional French breakfast- croissants and cake - and we took them away - should have sat outside and had a large coffee! Arrived at the place we are staying outside Luzern (Appchanstad or something like that) about 13:30. Hotel which we found on the internet is clean and far from basic having loads of additions that the family appreicate - including the outdoor pool. Kids went in
for a swim - I had some sleep. Then we did a quick tour of the local area - looked at the lake and Mountain Pilatus mountain railway - both within a couple of minutes of the hotel.
As we've travelled so far we are going to take it easy tonight and eat in the hotel. Tomorrow if the weather is good we will possibly go up Mount Pilatus.
Eleanor says - I'd just like to point out how special Dad looked in his giant bin bag lying in the middle of some random piece of grass. He was also able to carry on sleeping while three lorries drove past. We were considering starting the engine and driving off to see if he would notice.
