This morning I am saying goodbye, finishing my weaving, and then catching the Lady Express back to Fields Point where I left my rental car. I just read the Holden Prayer of Farewell again - "Lord God, you have called your servants to ventures of which we cannot see the ending, by paths as yet untrodden, through perils unknown. Give us faith to go out with good courage, not knowing where we go, but only that your hand is leading us and your love supporting us. Through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen." After a spectacular ferry ride downlake I drove over to Chelan to pick up my smoked trout from Joe. He gave me a delicious sample. YUM! I followed the Presbyterian pastor's advice and drove Hwy 2 through the mountains toward Seattle. It was beautiful ... read more

What an amazing day I have had today! The Lord's Day began with breakfast conversation followed by a walk around the village and pictures of chalet hill. Morning prayer from the Gather hymnal was at 9am and it was absolutely wonderful. One of the scripture readings had the verse, "In God we live and move and have our being." That verse has stayed with me all day. After worship Mark and I hiked up to Hart Lake and brought snow shoes just in case. The sun and blue skies came out and the views all along the way were spectacular! We got there by noon and I quickly rigged up to fish. I used a couple of wooly buggers and did quite well. I think I caught close to 12 total. Most were 7-8 inches. I ... read more

Today I woke up at 6:40 am - 11 hrs of sleep. Wow. I guess I was tired. My backside is terribly sore from yesterday's 12 mile bike ride on dirt and gravel with a heavy backpack. Ouch. That's smarts. Our trout was served for breakfast and many people offered their thanks. Matins this morning was on "playing" and how we can be more present in the moment and get lost in the wonder of play time. The registrar's children, Sophie and Toby were used as examples and Jesus welcoming the children (Luke 18:15-17) was the scripture text. It inspired me to relax more and look for ways to be more child-like today. i look forward to experiencing the holy as I play. I spent 4+ hours in the craft cave weaving. It looks like it ... read more

My alarm sounded at 4:50 am and after loading up my fishing gear and checking our mountain bikes for air in the tires - John and I were out of the village before 6 and bicycling 12 miles down to Lucerne (where the ferry boat dropped me off on day 1). The early morning was breathtaking. The sun peaked over the northern ridge and blue sky created the canvass for the sharp peaked mountains to stand out. The bike trip was exhilarating and I took plenty of pictures up lake and the northern cascades. We left out mountain bikes in Lucerne and hiked 3 miles over to Domke Lake. A man named Sid (who looked just like Colonel Custard) rented us a row boat and was surprised to see a picture of my golden trout from ... read more

Day 3 at Holden - Today was supposed to be a lazy day, but ended up full of adventure and fun experiences. The kitchen cooked up my lake trout for breakfast and the village enjoyed a tasty bite. I wandered up to the old mine and took lots of pictures of the old equipment, a classic outhouse, and the beautiful mountains above Holden. I continued on to the end of the 3rd tier of copper tailings and took a picture of the village down below. I wanted to go down a different route so I tromped through the snow and discovered copper creek. I tried following the trail, but quickly lost it in the heavy piles of snow under the pine trees. I managed to traverse my way up high enough to see copper falls and ... read more

Day 1 - After 9 hours of sleep I awoke to a quiet house. I started to read about the history of Holden Village and wrote in my journal until it was time to enjoy some french toast and fresh fruit with two other guests staying at the Holden B&B. The 3 of us caught the Lady of the Lake ferry boat and enjoyed the 2 hour ride up Lake Chelan to Lucerne. The views were simply majestic. The mountains seemed to grow right out of the lake on both sides. I learned that the Cascade mountains and the deep lake were originally formed by a series of glacers and the highest peak down to the lowest point in Lake Chelan is the deepest gorge in North America - deeper than the Grand Canyon! After we ... read more

Janine here - I have no idea what all this means, but for you fisherman out there, this is how the fishing was for Pastor's first day of sabbatical: The bite for the Laketrout here on Lake Chelan has been "OFF" one day and "ON" the next day in the Lower basin..The Pressure fronts that are moving in have been challenging along with all The Driftwood that has invaded our lower basin from the Meadow Creek Mud Slide. Today the Bite was real Slow the first hour and half then the wind calmed and the Laketrout started biting. We found the 9 Laketrout that we caught today off Minneapolis Beach in water depths from 130 to 180ft. The Ace Hi-Fly by Silverhorde was the Top Bait today. It was my Pleasure to have Pastor Chris Webb ... read more

Driving along the Columbia River staring at the white-capped peaks of the Cascade mountains was a beautiful way to start the morning. I met Joe at the launch by 6:30 and we were fishing by 7. It was a slow start for the first 2 hours, but I enjoyed taking in the scenery, learning how Lake Chelan was formed, and hearing Joe's story. Nearly 2 hours into our trip, we finally got a bite and I landed what ended up being the biggest fish of the day - 7 1/2 lbs. We caught a total of 9 and kept 7. I gave one to Joe, packed up 4 to take with me to Holden, and Joe will smoke the other 2 and have them ready for me to pick up on Memorial Day. After the adrenaline ... read more
