So tomorrow morning I am going to give a sad good bye to this beautiful and bizarre island where there is nothing else to do but scuba, snorkel, do karaoke on friday nights and relax in the sun.... oh and get eaten ALIVE by sand flies. Seriously I thought I couldnt stand less than mosquitoes but no... I STRONGLY dislike those little black man eaters more! I did however accomplished my goal of barely doing any work overcoming a fear of being in the open water, a fear of going under the open water at depth, and a fear of doing karaoke. Yes you read that right, I did my first karaoke night in a little bar on the water at Bay Island College Diving where every Friday night people come together for a belt-your-heart-out, sing-a-long ... read more

My trip from Houston to Utila was an adventure as usual. I arrived at the Houston airport at 3am waiting for my 440am flight to San Salvador. I had the "privilege" of sitting next to young man covered in tattoos (including the infamous teardrop on his cheek bone) who was overly anxious about flying and who disclosed he just got out of high security imprisonment on Jan 7th after 4 years in and this was his first flight in 7 years. Lucky me. He was adamant about talking and sharing his story while trying to get as much as he could out of me. As most of you know I've worked with immates/ ex-inmates and its never really bothered me but there was something about his anxious-energy that I wasn't all that comfortable with so I ... read more

So the journey has begun and of course with some little hitches along the way. Firstly, I have to say that I'm a big fan of the Quick Coach bus line from Vancouver to Seattle. It's got WiFi and was suppose to be 4 hours but it got me to downtown Seattle within 3.25. No lineups at the border, no paying for parking, no hassles other than getting myself to the bus in the pouring rain and having to spurge on a taxi because my pack was starting to soak. Even met an interesting guy who works in gold mining and had an inspiring discussion about life transitions. Go figure! I had a couple hours to wait for Tia since I was early and thanks to D. at the front desk of the Best Western I ... read more

Well the first Bavubuka Passion Project although completed is really just the beginning of many new and exciting things... This last week in Kampala really revealed the most to me; both in mind and spirit. After three weeks of go go go there was a day or two of much needed reflection, some problem solving, and an overview of results and future endeavours This last week I did some final training with a few of the young women of Bavubuka and some youth, did some yoga workshops thanks to our friends at YYOGA Highgate in Vancouver, BC, trained 25 single refugee mothers, visited an orphanage who is doing some amazing work with over 200 children, and planted a mango tree on the Bavubuka property as a sign of gratitude from the Passion team and a reminder ... read more

Well folks is official Maughan has sold me a to a boda driver (motorcycle taxi driver) for $20,000 USD and a small plot on the Nile. I tried to barter in a few goats and a giraffe but he wasnt havent it. I dont know his name because he didnt think that was important but he has graciously taken us twice on his bike without making us pay a mazungo (white person's) prices.... Although this is very true he didnt realize that I had no intention of living in Kampala to be his not first but second wife so he opted for the opportunity to ask me if I would take his first born daughter to Canada to get her a better education... all expenses on me of course.. ha ha Another week another journey… Overwhelmed ... read more

Well we are back in Kampala after a very intense filled few days!!! What would have taken 7 or 8 hours took us 5.5 to drive thanks to a driver who was aiming for record transit time. Everyone napped on the ride up north but I on the other hand forced myself to stay awake. Partly because I was sitting in a middle seat with no head rest and partly because I didn’t want to miss anything When we left Kampala were we told that it was about 5C hotter in Gulu as we made our journey we could feel the temperature rising and our bottled water becoming hotter and hotter. Although Kampala is considered modern it is still lined with dusty roads bodas (motorcycle taxis) cars trucks and people. As we moved out of the ... read more

Well I have arrived safe and sound! After an amazing evening on the town of London walking the streets, having some sit down time and getting on the Eye of London with Ms. Sarah we had a quick sleep and I boarded a bus and the tube to Heathrow early in the AM where I made my flight 20 mins before departing (that's a record !) So after 18 hours of flight and 2 days in journey I arrived at Entebbe airport at 11p last night where I was shuttled in a line of travellers (wearing a turtleneck as I was going from -4C in London to 24C in Entebbe yuck!), paid $50 for my visa, and was greeted by Maughan and her friend Twiggy. Maughan rented us a guest house room in Kampala where the ... read more

Well here we go.. An hour delayed at first department allowing me enough time to quickly write a little introduction to this journey. I firstly want to say thank you for all the support and interest in this journey. There are over 200 people registered with my travel blog so far and the support is breath taking! This journey is not just about giving back to the world but reconnecting with what I first experienced in Africa the first time; community and being in the present moment. My life has always been about "What next?" this journey is about "What is now" and "What can I do to continue this movement I started on two years ago?" I will be in London for a day, for the first time, connecting with a lovely friend I have ... read more

Sasa, Hi Everyone Well my journey in Kenya is over for this year. It has been an unbelievable experience that has truly changed my life. On sunday night there was a major blackout that lasted about 8 hours across all of Kenya. It reminded me of the black out that happened when I was in Toronto 6 years ago except for the fact that blackouts happen all the time. It was sad to leave my new work team at AYT on Monday. They presented me with a beautiful statue of a Maasai woman warrior. They told me that Maasai warriors are only men in their culture but when they saw it it reminded them of me and my fight to provide for others. As you can imagine there were tears but so many amazing words. Over ... read more

Over the last week I have continued developing workshops for Africa Youth Trust and the young women who work here, attended an HIV/AIDS project launch, and meet more people that inspired me. On Thursday I had the privilege of going into Kibera slum with Faith, a dedicated youth empowerment worker where she showed me a recycling and composting program that the Soweto (slum region) youth group started. From the pictures you'll just get a glance of what its really like. The air is filled in some parts with the smell of a sewer as the only way for residents to dump their waste is in small plastic bags in a little stream that flows around their dirt homes. It wasnt the smell that got to me so much as the kids playing in and around it. ... read more
