People have asked me over and over again "Why are you doing this documentary Loretta?" After all, you already have a non profit that does this work and you're about to start your masters degree, you're coaching clients and have a little startup. Is it really worth it?! How is this documentary really going to impact in the world? After being here in India I can tell you exactly why we are doing this and why it's so important. If you haven't seen it yet (in the past couple posts from this trip) we are uncovering some beautiful gems who are going to be the fortune we need for a brighter future. They are girls and young women who are strong and making a change in the world. They are young women who are ready to ... read more

We've now been in Bangalore for 6 days and already I know I'm leaving a piece of my heart here with the girls in Vivek Nagar slum that are connected with Global Concerns Leadership India . Alot of international workers will say "Once you've seen one slum, you seen them all." I've heard that many times since starting international humanitarian work in 2008. I bet though they have not been here or met Brinda Adige. Here in Vivek Nagar slum, imparticular the area where Brinda created the Global Concerns India office (a small 10x20 sqft room with a metal garbage pull down door), the energy and the people are a little different. Groups of women meet each month and share their concerns about their community, their health, their wellness, and that of their children, especially their ... read more

After two 9.5 hour flights and an 6 hour layover that turned into 8 hours we finally arrived in Mumbai. We were greeted by crowds of travelers and a sea of traffic upon exiting the airport. In 2007, I stayed with the Sohoni family and when they found out I was coming back to India they were kind enough to welcome us in their home once again. With the time change we only had 3 days in Mumbai to get in the interviews needed before leaving to work with the younger girls in Banaglore. India has always been a bit of a magical place for me and a place of contrast contradiction. It's overwhelming yet peaceful, it's beautiful yet dirty, modern and yet ancient; so I was excited to come back again. This time with a ... read more

Well we are off again but this time with two new INCREDIBLE team members and a suitcase of stellar Lunapads. It's country # 4 of 12 for Global Sorority . Over the next 17 days Tia, Robyn, Reem, and I will be traveling to India to connect with over 25 girls and young women for our documentary. We will be learning about their lives, providing them with leadership tools, all school aged girls will receive a Lunapads Pads4Girls kit, and we'll be asking them about how they see the world, what they would like their future to look like, what might stop them from achieving it, and what they might need to get there. We will be starting off in Mumbai interviewing a young woman involved with Point of View... read more

Well Part One of Global Sorority has come to an end in Tipperary County. As of tomorrow would have taken nine flights, six very long car drives, 2 botabota's at night, one of which we were stopped by police at a road block, and a few long walks across dirt roads and farmlands in 21 days. Tia and I have finished our trip on her family’s organic farm. The weather has been a bit chilly with beautiful sun and sporadic clouds and showers. It’s such a great experience being on a farm and I wish I was able to experience a little more but it’s time to go home. At first it seemed a little odd for me to come this far not to experience all of Ireland or at least a little more but what ... read more

This week of our trip was much different than the first. From rural Uganda to one of the most beautiful towns in Piemonte, in northern Italy. We have been taking in the lanscape of Venaus, a small town just outside of Susa. It’s a writers or artists paradise, with old buildings, cobble stone streets surrounded by unbelievably beautiful mountains. Venaus, has around 2,000 people, almost all of whom were born here. Sometimes going back more than 4 generations. Very few people come to visit, so we were a bit of the subject around town. When Tia and I went to dinner two nights ago, we were greeted with blank faces and stares. The guys who ran the joint must have called their friend, because by the time we left there were about 10 men ranging 20-50 years ... read more

In the last seven days we have had the privilege of being invited in the lives of so many amazing people, young and old to assist us in our journey of our documentary. From playing with small children to providing leadership tools to girls and young women, and hearing the trials and triumphs of women and their views about the future. Tia and I have had endless conversations in the last week about our experiences, at times so overwhelming. We have traveled thousands of kms, taken various flights, been in a number of cars, and walked on a few dirt paths, been on a couple scary evening motorcycle rides, and had quite a few unbelievable conversations that have moved us. Almost everyone we have met (both rich and poor) has lost at least one family member ... read more

So much to do such little time

There is no question that I knew that running this journey on such a tight schedule would be challenging both personally and professionally. In the last few days not only has my body been adjusting to time change and diet change (yup we’ve pretty much been eating the same food -eggs and stale toast for breakfast, beans, rice, and greens for lunch and dinner) but we are also working within a system that is much different than our own. Trying to gain answers to questions that do not belong to a system or neighbour’s advice is challenging enough but add a language barrier and we are having to get pretty creative in putting all the information together. At same time the laughter, smiles and community are so beautiful. Each place we go in the world will be ... read more

We’ve made it! After a 9 hour flight from Vancouver and San Diego Tia and I met in London for our seven hour lay over to Entebbe. Plenty of time to catch up and check in about our journey. Even with a seven hour lay over we ended up having to run to make our flight (to add a little excitement) We arrived at 745am on Wednesday morning in Entebbe and were met by Dan our coordinator for this part of the trip thanks to Jane from Stratosphere International. Jane mentioned to me a few months ago there would be some girls from York House in Vancouver going to Ibanda, where Dan was born, to assist the school/children in building a library. Since I know what often happens when people do volunteer initiatives overseas (foreigners giving ... read more

Well it's been a while since my last trip but now the adventures and journey continue... with a bit of an exciting spin. My amazing and beautiful friend, Tia Kelly, of San Diego and I are about to embark on an unreal journey to three countries, in three weeks, into three communities to capture the stories of young women and their visions, dreams, and aspirations. From rural Uganda to meto Italy to countryside Ireland. We will provide coaching tools for leadership, engage them from a place of passion, and listen to their stories. In order for us to make this go really well we need your support. AND NOW! We are asking our community to support us by clicking on this link and making a pledge to support our journey. Every pledge matters. If we don't ... read more
