Nordinary Moments

Welcome to my blog! I will be flying to Mexico on December 1, then trekking down and around Belize, where I will hopefully start my Espanol lessons. Early January 2009 will find me Honduras bound, with adventures continuing to Nicaragua and Costa Rica where I intend on becoming a hammock inspector. Once I get fired for sleeping on the job, I will head up to dip my toes into the Pacific Ocean with Danielle in Mexico. That’s the plan anyway……unless I find that perfect beach, buy a hut, and spend the rest of my life braiding hair, applying henna tattoos, and just generally living off the Caribbean. The possibilities are endless!!!!!

Finally the beach! And a great beach it is that I was on before 4 pm the day of arrival. The sand is very fine and dark and gets everywhere, but oh so awesome after the heat and lack of beach of Granada. Ursina and I were in heaven as we are total beach girls! The first night found us watching the sunset while having a couple of Tonas at a beachside bar/restaurant. Later that night, San Juan had a power outage so out came the candles which only adds to the magic of the moment! The end of the evening found us at the Iguana Club, right on the beach and on the second floor which is perfect for catching the ocean breeze. We stopped at a dance club on the way home for a ... read more

We three Amigos decided to take the 12:30 bus out of Granada after saying our goodbyes to Roberto, Ruban and Himie who made me feel very much like family during my stay at the Colonial Room as they were very helpful, kind, accommodating and knowledgeable about Granada and the surrounding area. They are great guys! For anyone looking for a place, this is the place to stay. Huge rooms, clean, 3 blocks from Central Park, and of course, the hammock in the open courtyard was my fav spot! (thanks for the bike loan Himie). Once at the bus station, which is basically a parking lot where the buses leave from, we starting playing musical chicken bus! Simon and me amigos' bags were put on the top of the bus, and we got on to sit there ... read more

Lonely Planet says that Granada is the sort of place where you can while away a lot of time, and I have been bewitched by it for 10 days (initially was supposed to be 5). Sina and I tried to escape yesterday once we had mailed our packages home, but nothing was working in our favour, so it wasn´t meant to be! The power to the whole city went off for most of the day. No power means no internet to retrieve a mailing address for my package, no phone to call home for the address, and the post office couldn´t weigh our boxes anyway. And so it is!! The worst part of no power is no water...ahhh!!!....Sina and I ended up buying a gallon of water, which Mike poked holes in, we hung it on ... read more

Awaken by the sounds of church bells, walk out of your huge colonial room to the courtyard outside your door to laze in your white crochet-like hammock. Watch the sun peek into the open courtyard while the hummingbirds feast on flowers around you, and the traffic is a dull roar that comes through your tall wooden front door, coupled with a wrought iron outer door (your portion $12.50 US) The idea to climb the Iglesia de La Merced 1 block away to capture the sunrise on film tugs you to quickly dress, hence finding a huge cockroach (Free $US) at the bottom of your colonial armoire. Your angel of a roommate Sena (Priceless $Swiss Francs) dispenses with the unwanted guest in a Warrior Sister Goddess fashion. You make it to the unlocked tower to see the ... read more

My initial plan was to take the boat from Placencia to Puerto Cortes (Honduras) which leaves on Fridays, and then take the bus to San Pedro Sula. However, I had a nightmare about the boat trip the week prior to leaving so decided to take a plane instead. How strange the way things work out, but so right at the same time! I got to the Placencia Airport to take my 8 30 am flight after taking my first pics of the Placencia sunrise on the day that I was leaving. Now that is sad!!! The airport is quite small, and I am told not to go far as the plane is coming from Belize City to pick me up. Hmmm....now where would I disappear to, as there isn´t a building in site, except for Tropic ... read more

It poured the previous night in San Ignacio and didn't let up so I wasn't going to be spending my last day here lazing around the pool. I quickly decided to check out and head to Dangriga for the night (and the beach) in order to shorten the next day's travel to Placencia. I enjoy changing plans, and after meeting Les on the bus I decided to go to Hopkins Village instead. Les is from Alberta (go figure), and is down here in Belize working on damming projects for Ducks Unlimited. Hopkins is a tiny village just south of Dangriga and once Les negotiated a cab fare, we were off to Seagull's Nest. Not much to The Nest.....a tiny place with a shared kitchen, a veranda out front & 4 rooms. I went for a walk ... read more

My prior plan to hire a taxi to take me to Xunantunich fell by the wayside as Erminia's (waitress at Uguanda) finance offered to be my guide. Elton thought it quite silly that I was prepared to pay $30US, even though that is the going rate. Elton & I had an early start (7:30 am), took the local bus and then the hand cranked ferry across the river. An uphill and extremely humid 1 mile walk got us to Xunantunich. Small by comparison to Tikal, but fabulous in its own right. Since we got there so early, we had Xunan all to ourselves!!! It doesn't take long to explore the site, and El Castillo is the tallest. Once I had filled my eyes of the scenery, I asked Elton to walk down first so that he ... read more

Tikal boasts the highest ruins in Central America and I had envisioned myself there for months prior. Today was the day that I was to experience the steep temples that tower above the jungle's canopy, and it didn't disappoint! The trek to Tikal via a/c'ed minivan was long and bumpy from San Ignacio, Belize (perhaps aided by my impatience to get there). Elias picked Mandy, Adelin & myself up at the Aguada Hotel at 7:30 am. Normally I don't eat breakfast (don't tell my Mom) but I choose to that day and it was a saving grace that I did! Tikal is located in Guatamela, so we had to maneuver the border crossing which consisted of switching vehicles, walking across the border, paying the $17.75 US Belizean departure tax (wait, but I am coming back that ... read more

After a water taxi from Caye Caulker, jaunt to the Belize City bus station, and a chicken bus that broke down enroute, I checked into The Aguada Hotel (4 hours later), located in Santa Elena (sister city to San Ignacio). The Aguada is a great hotel, with a palapa restaurant, pond - it has A/C and a swimming pool - I feel I am living the life of luxury! The grounds are beautifully kept, and include plantain, cactus, coconut, black orchids, palms, Bird of Paradise, ginger flowers, and so many more that I can’t name. Wildlife include bullfrogs, turtles, pigeons, toucans, fish, many birds, and I am told big iguanas (eek! I am trying to stay away from the big trees). I booked Barton Creek Cave for the next day, and Mandy, Adelin & I were ... read more
