Last day in Tassie and we drove up 30 minutes to Bonorong Wildlife Park. On entry, they gave us a bag of food to go hand-feed the kangaroos with. You walk around the corner and there, sprawled just about everywhere (with an amazing hilly backdrop) were every size of kangaroo imaginable. Some jumping around, others being fed and my favourites, the ones lying on their sides looking like they were missing a can of beer and tv. We fed them for a while and then joined a guided tour of the park. I make no secret of the fact that wombats are my absolute favourite Australian animal and today, I was privileged enough to meet the most amazing orphaned baby wombat. The woman keeper (Bianca) was brilliant and told us all about him, how he came ... read more

Today we rented a car (don't rent from Budget, they're awful) and firstly, drove it up Mount Wellington. I hadn't driven for over a year but I was surprised at how naturally it came back! So naturally in fact that I kept trying to change gear in an automatic! The views all the way up the mountain were amazing although admittedly, I only really saw them in my wing mirror. When we arrived at the top, we could see for absolute miles. The city, the water, the harbours, the roads, the beaches. Well, this was definitely worth it! We parked up, got out of the car and were nearly blown away! I'd never felt wind as strong as that before, it actually moved me! And it was freezing. We took a stroll up to the summit ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Tasmania » Port Arthur January 29th 2011

This afternoon, we were picked up for the long way round to Port Arthur - the site of an infamous prison, feared by convicts Australia wide. Our first stop en route was the historic town of Richmond. Normally I use the word 'historic' lightly in Australia but Tassie was the second place the Europeans settled after Sydney and genuinely does have some pretty cool history. We visited an old house which in its time has acted as a school, a doctor's surgery in addition to being a home. It was interesting to see how it would have looked back when the British first arrived and it also had a slight eeriness about it. We walked amongst the houses, shops and old pub to the river. With the old bridge (I think it may have been the ... read more

First stop Hobart. We arrived in the evening just before sunset and my verdict so far was that Tasmania was more than beautiful. I always think that if the drive from the airport is impressive then good things are likely to be ahead. We checked into our hostel and took a stroll down to the Salamanca area where everything was happening. This was clearly where Hobart came alive in the evenings. Tasmania is said by some to have the best food in Australia and we stopped at a little Vietnamese restaurant in Tasmania for dinner. Does that mean it's the best Vietnamese in Australia? Or just the only one in Tasmania? Anyway, it was good food and we managed to get there just before a queue around the entire restaurant formed. We discovered that Tasmania is ... read more

Sarah and I caught the luxurious Murray's coach to flashpack down to the nation's capital Canberra, for the weekend. The journey went quickly and before long Sarah had set me a 45 minute Canberra related pun challenge. Being a pun genius, this took all of three minutes and after five minutes, Sarah's cringes told me to stop. We arrived in Canberra and were met by Natassja, a friendly Canberra girl who I work with in Sydney. She kindly walked us around the err... bustling city centre, helped us with the buses and walked us to our hotel (yep, hotel!) Amazing! After the excitement of seeing a hotel room with only two beds in it (it was $10 more for a hotel room than the hostels in Canberra – crazy!) we went to brave Canberra's bus systems- ... read more

Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Kiama January 3rd 2011

Just 2 and a half hours on the train down from Sydney and you'll reach the coastal town of Kiama. I hopped of the train and immediately headed towards the famous... blow hole to discover that today, on this very rare occasion, it had decided it didn't want to blow. Well that was pretty much the reason I'd gone down to Kiama so what next? I walked around the town which is fairly old by Australian standards and looked at the old and interesting architecture. The post office and the church were my favourites but that may have just been because they were pink and yellow (respectively.) I then decided tha tit was time to see a bit more coast and it really was impressive even with the dark grey sky staring down upon it. I ... read more

Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Newcastle November 27th 2010

High ho, high ho, it's off to Newcastle I go... Newcastle, New South Wales that is, the one with the sunshine and beaches. Just a 2 and a half hour train journey from Sydney and you arrive in what feels like another world. Little Newcastle with its laid-back atmosphere, beautiful beaches and quirky cafés and shops. Why don't more people come here? Sarah and I had decided to make the journey north to do some Beckham spotting as he was in town to play against the Newcastle Jets. The place seemed pretty empty apart from the small crowd of surfers and BMXers on the beach. Sarah and I walked along the beach for a while and waited for the red lantern night market to start. The market as quite small but filled with lots of little ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Western Australia » Margaret River November 8th 2010

First stop today was Cape Leewin where the proud, tallest mainland lighthouse keeps watch over the meeting point of the Southern and Indian Oceans. After watching the dolphins splash around, we began the journey back to Perth with many stops along the way. From Cape Leewin and on to the Margaret River region, packed to the brim with what have to be some of the world's most beautiful, bright beaches and of course, the Margaret River. Whilst here, we were taken to one of the many group of caves in in the area, given hard hats and head lamps and sent into the caves. I actually went in and it was huge in there! The formations were amazing and looked like melting rock frozen in time. We ventured into one area of the cave, turned our ... read more

This morning, Brendo took us to a secret beach with no name. Sorry I can't be more specific but if you fancy a visit... it's somewhere near the Gap (not the shop.) We took a walk over to the Blowhole (where the sea shoots up between the rocks) but it wasn't blowing today. Just tricking us by making incredibly loud noises just like it would make if it was blowing. A little while later and we were at the Gap. Where Antarctica broke away from Australia. We kind of just stood there for a while watching the ocean before it was time to move on again. Westward we went onto William Bay National Park. Where we were greeted by by my old friend the rain and his friend, cold wind. So the idea to swim in ... read more

I awoke to find a girl in my all-boy dorm. “Excuse me... where am I?” “Old Swan Barracks” (unfortunately for all of us). “Thanks. Any idea how I got here?” Why yes! I had an idea. She came in with Luke and passed out on his bed. He didn't remember either and woke up saying “who the hell are you and what are you doing in my bed?” I explained and left, wishing them the best of luck. I was picked up outside my hostel and my journey south west began. The first stop was the beautiful Stirling Ranges. Another beautiful mountain range that rivals the blue mountains but is much less well-known and quieter. Hiking in the middle of the day wasn't exactly the best idea in the Australian heat but that is exactly what ... read more
