South America » Peru » Ica » Pisco March 5th 2010

Sand. A lot of it. Pretty much everywhere, including all over my teeth. Today, I went sandboarding just outside Pisco. And it was amazing! I caught a buggy with my group out to the sand dunes and then across them. Better than the best rollercoster I have ever been on! And I screamed a little bit too much on the really steep ones. It got a bit scary sometimes. When we stopped at the first big dune, they got out the boards which were so small! I´m so used to seeing massive surf boards, that I was not expecting such to see such tiny things. They told me that the first slope was the smallest and if I were to do any, I should give this one a go. So after everyone had had a go, ... read more

South America » Ecuador » Centre » Baños March 1st 2010

The day started off badly by having to wake up at 5am to catch the bus and there being no one in reception for me to pay my bill to. I managed to wake up the owner who although is lovely, wasn't exactly impressed. I then had to walk to the bus station with my big rucksack on because the taxis were hiding out pretty much all at the bus station. Got to the station at 5.50am and at 6.20am, my 6am bus still had not arrived and wasn't going to either. I had to jump on a bus to Riobamba which I had to stand up on all the way and then jump onto another bus very quickly to Guayaquil with my evening flight time flashing mentally at the back of my mind. Not sure ... read more

So after our long bumpy journey to Baños, Merlyn and I jumped in a taxi to a hostel that Merlyn and booked us for the one night. We stepped out of the taxi and I was instantly in love with Baños. The air is so clean and clear with no humidity and behind us was a beautiful waterfall flowing down one of the many green hills surrounding the town. The hostel was great but I somehow managed to lock myself in the bathroom for a while. Couldn´t wait to get to sleep after the very long day we´d had. Woke up quite early and the first thing I had to do was take every piece of clothing I own (except for what I was wearing of course) to the laundry. You don´t realise that when you´re ... read more

6am wake up call! And it was still dark. And raining. Half an hour to get out of bed, brush my teeth, put in my contacts, find my bikini and then put it on. 6.30am - catch the dinghy out into the middle of the sea in the pouring rain but at least it´s light now. I didn´t quite believe Kike when he jumped in and said that the water was warm but it actually was! I jumped off of dinghy and straight onto a big fat jellyfish (I´m just assuming it was big and fat, I actually didn´t even see it) and managed to get myself stung a few times on my arm, foot and leg. Me being me however, didn´t actually realise that I´d been stung for another 15 mins or so when Kike ... read more

South America » Ecuador » Galápagos » Santa Cruz Island February 23rd 2010

Last day in the Galapagos and it has totally exceeded all my expectations! If I hear anyone say that it´s overrated, I will happily hit them. We woke up really early to have a dry landing in Santa Cruz and took a bus to the Charles Darwin Research Centre. There were baby turtles, big male turtles, females - tonnes! They´re so gracious but have a bit of a sad story. If they´re in the wild, they likely to be eaten by rats but in captivity they´re likely to go blind. Damn rats. It was really quite sad to see the blind turtles. Kike said goodbye at the centre which was also really sad - he was really an amazing guide. And we continued onto the airport. No upgrade for us this time though. Got to Guayaquil ... read more

South America » Ecuador » Galápagos » Española Island February 21st 2010

Gardener Bay, Española Island - without a doubt the most beautiful beach I have ever seen. White sand and at least four different shades of blue in the sea. I can totally understand why the sea lions chose this beach to do their sun bathing on. Unfortunately though, Merlyn was really ill this morning which meant she missed out - such a shame. But she felt better by the afternoon so didn´t miss the whole island. This time, it was a wet landing so I had to make tough decision on whether or not to take my camera. I didn´t take it in the end but regretted it as the wet landing was actually that wet at all. But if it had had been destroyed, I would have been totally gutted. Didn´t really do much on ... read more

South America » Ecuador » Galápagos » San Cristóbal Island February 20th 2010

Nice early wake up to be take to the interpretive centre which is a cool little museum that gives you an interesting geological and historical background on the Islands. I think a place becomes much more interesting once you know a little bit about how it became what it is today. After the centre, we had some free time. To shop! Or roam around San Cristobal. It´s a real modern looking, clean place but I have to admit that I did spend almost all of my time there looking in the shops (and yes I can hear the ´such a girl´comments being hurled at me right now.) On the way to the island we passed tonnes of boats all just sitting there, mostly acting as sun loungers for sea lions. They had been apprehended by the ... read more

In the Galapagos -wow! This place must be the most incredible/beautiful place I have ever/will ever see. It started off pretty well for Merlyn and I on the way out as they bumped us up to first class on the plane despite us both looking like trampy gringas who hadn´t washed in a while (sorry Merlyn). We didn´t get the same privilege on the way back however. We landed, caught a bus to a dinghy which took us to our boat: Anahi (Journey 1). And what a boat it is! Beautiful living and dining areas; great clean rooms; bar; tasty food; great crew; and it came with a great guide too - Kike. After our welcome, we were told to put on our geek shoes - we were off to explore. We dry ñanded on Isla ... read more

South America February 16th 2010

It´s carnival in Montañita and it´s been crazy! The prices go up and the number of people arriving in Montañita increases by the minute. They get a four day weekend so everyone from everywhere in Ecuador heads to the coast to party. I managed to go out Friday, Saturday and Sunday but lost it yesterday and went to bed early like a loser. I´m marking Sunday as my favourite carnival day though. It started to rain on "cocktail alley" (a long street where they sell cocktails for $2.00) and where at home, we would all run inside at the sight of a drop of rain, everyone here stays out and enjoys it. They take their shoes of, dance in the mud, drink and forget all their worries. Think it had to be the first time I´ve ... read more

So about 36 hours after I left London with an extremely short snooze in Lima, I arrived in Montanita! It's a small hippie surf town on the coast and I love it! I started my Spanish lessons about 3 weeks ago and at first I was just learning the alphabet so I thought Spanish was going to be easy. What a mistake that was! I think it's going to be of those things I may have to let beat me although I'm refusing to give up! Everyone where I'm staying speaks English too I'm not exactly forced to learn Spanish. Although I do seem to picking up a lot of Swedish (well I understood one sentence) thanks to the high concentration of beautiful Swedish people running around here. I'm sort of becoming accustomed to the local ... read more
