Oceania » New Zealand » South Island » Nelson Region February 27th 2011

Nelson is about an hour away from the top of the south island of New Zealand. It is on the coast and there is a a big shipping port there. It is a beautiful place with lots of clear crystal rivers running through it and lots of green parks. Just north of Nelson is a little place called Happy Valley where you can go and do more adventurous things. Happy Valley also has the biggest flying fox in the world that goes for 3 kilometers above a great big valley. As it was my cousins birthday we decided to go and try this. To get to the flying fox that is at the very top of the mountain we had to ride big quad bikes up the mountain. Before we got on them they made us ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Taupo February 18th 2011

New Zealand is full of things to do if you want to be mad. Things a bit like bungee jumping and Jet Boat riding. Mum would not let me do a bungee jump ( I was too small and too young). When we got to Taupo she said that one of the best things that we could do would be to go on a jet boat. A jet boat is a speed boat that is able to go in shallow water because the engine does not dangle down off the back of the boat but is mostly inside and sucks the water into the boat and pushes it out really hard. This makes the boat glide along the top of the water and it can do circle turns and go very very fast. We decided to ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Bay of Islands » Paihia February 16th 2011

I was really excited when mum told me that we were going to try and swim with the dolphins. The Bay of islands is in the very north of the North Island in NewZealand and is famous for the dolphins that live there. There are over 400 named dolphins that live just in the bays off Paihai and Russell. We were going to go and try and swim with them and then take a speed boat out to a place called the hole in the wall. There are lots of rules about how and when you can swim with the dolphins. For example it is illegal to swim with dolphins if there are baby dolphins or Juvenile dolphins in the pod. Also we can only swim with them if it looks like they want to play ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island February 14th 2011

Mum had decided that the best way for us to see the North Island of New Zealand was to hire a campervan. This meant that we could drive wherever we wanted and not have to worry about finding hotels or anything. I think mum was a little nervous about driving Jenny when we saw her as she was really big. She was 7 meters long and 3 meters high. At least they drive on the same side of the road in New Zealand as we do here in the UK. We drove from Auckland right up to Whangarei for our first nights camping and checked into a campsite. There is lots to do for kids in campsites in NZ. Nearly all of them have kids playgrounds and there were always other kids around to play with. ... read more

Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Sydney » Darling Harbour February 12th 2011

In Darling harbour is the famous National Maritime Museum. As we had passed this many times we decided to go and visit. We were able to get onto a submarine and a destroyer ship and look around. The submarine was called HMAS Onslow. It is an Oberon class submarine made in 1968. To get into the submarine you had to be very bendy and go through lots of hatches and holes that kept it watertight when it was underwater. It was a long way down the ladder and the size of the beds that they men had to sleep on reminded me of a play house they looked so small. The man told us that the men could be under the sea for weeks without coming up for air and that there would be 3 men ... read more

Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Sydney » Bondi Beach February 11th 2011

We visited both Manly and Bondi beach in Sydney. Both are really famous. Manly beach is really busy and pretty. You have to get the ferry for a 20 minutes out of Circular Quay and mum got really sunburned. It is a nice place and there were lots of kids on the beach. There were lots of nets to make sure that you were safe if you went swimming and to stop the sharks coming through. It was a nice day but the beach was kind of small. Bondi beach is much bigger than Manly beach. To get to Bondi beach you have to first get a train to Bondi Junction and then get a bus to Bondi Beach. There is a great cliff top walk where you get to see the huge beach and the ... read more

Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Sydney » Darling Harbour February 10th 2011

While we were in Sydney it was Australia day. Australians celebrate this a bit like we do for Burns day. It is a national holiday and everybody has BBQs and celebrates what it means to be Australian. Me and mum went to Darling Harbour for the day. All round the harbour there were lots of stalls selling Australian flags and tattoos and all sorts of stuff Australian. We got a flag and I got a tattoo on my cheek. There was also a big floating stage in the middle of the harbour and there were live bands playing music. Just before it got dark there were all sorts of important people on the stage, including the premier of New South Wales. They had an awards ceremony for people who had been brave or enterprising. The Premier ... read more

Our best day by far was going to Toronga Zoo in Sydney. We organised to go to the Roar and Snore sleepover in the Zoo. This meant that we got to sleep in a little tent in the actual Zoo. When we arrived the zoo was closed. There were about 20 people on the sleepover. The zoo was very quiet and we went off to see the Koalas. The first amazing thing that we saw was the Koalas were all awake and they were jumping from tree to tree. Our guide said that it was very unusual that they did this when people were watching, especially as they sleep for over 20 hours a day. The next thing that we saw was the Chimps sleeping. We got up really close and got to see them sleeping ... read more

After leaving Cairns we took a flight to Brisbane which was about 2 hours. It was really funny beacause there was a time difference of an hour between there and Cairns. Brisbane is also in Queensland but much more southern than Cairns. On the first day we went to Australia Zoo which is the home of Steve Irwin. He is the dad of Bindi who is on television. Steve died when a stingray stung him a few years ago. He was really famous for his crocodile hunting, mad personality and conservation. Australia Zoo is about an hours train ride away from Brisbane. Then a bus picks you up for a short ride to the Zoo. The Zoo is really big with lots of animals big and small. The most famous animals in the Zoo are Crocodiles. ... read more

When we realised that we would be in Cairns when Cyclone Yasi was due to pass over we tried really hard to get out. Mum tried to get flights but they were so expensive that it was not possible and we were told that if we drove, because the cyclone was 400kms wide, we could end up driving right into it. The only option was to stay put and hope that there would be a safe place for us to hide from the storm. On the morning that they cyclone was due everybody was getting really worried because they had upgraded the category of the cyclone to a force 5. This meant that this would be one of only about 18 force 5 cyclones to hit land ever. We were told that we had to go ... read more
