I got a case of the traveler stomach this day. YIKES! I had hoped to do many cool things in Nazca on the first day, but instead I spent it mostly sleeping. I caught a bus from Lima to Nazca at 430am, arriving at 1130am. I checked into my lodging and fell asleep. I stayed close to the facilities! and slept on and off until 7pm. At long last I was able to move and had some matte de coca. Basically, matte de coca is something that is prescribed here to help with any and every ailment. And, it actually has seemed to fix altitude sickness and now travelers stomach. Impressive. It is a tea made from the coca leaves, the same leaves that when processed and condensed make cocaine. But, at a leaf and tea ... read more

My first night in the Amazon was on June 20th and the sounds of things splashing in the river woke me oh, so many times. Where they sounds of things coming out of the water or going in? I had images of navy seals coming out of the water and bombarding my bungalo...or kapibari, which are HUGE, crazy looking rats! Yes, they are the largest member of the rodent family in the world & a big ol family of them lived on the river right in front of my bungalo. I arrived in Puerto Maldonado at noonish on the 20th and we boarded a boat down the river to the lodge. There were a handful of us in all...a couple girls from Quebec and three older folks from the Netherlands. There was already a big ole ... read more

Well, I am out of the rainforest...BEAUTIFUL. I have some great pics but they will have to wait until I get to a computer I can use for more than a couple minutes. I must get truckin to the airport to fly back to Lima and then head down to see the Nasca Lines. Hopefully I will have some time in Lima to properly post photos. Until then, here is one to get started...... read more

Day 2 at Machu Picchu Day 2 started when I woke up in a lovely hotel, fresh and clean from a true hot water shower. I got a great deal on a hotel that I never could have afforded. Well, wanted to pay for. I showed up at the end of the evening and they wanted to fill their rooms. So, I got a 175 dollar per night room for 40. NICE! Everything in Machu Picchu is expensive because it is for tourists, so finding even a dorm room for under 50 is unreal. I lucked out! I´d intended to get up at the crack of dawn today and see the sunrise over Machu Picchu, but I was so completely exhausted from yesterday that I just couldn´t get my legs moving. I wound up sleeping until ... read more

Day 1 in Machu Picchu So today began with my much anticipated trip to Machu Picchu, one of the most seculded Incan cities. I awoke at 430am to get ready, eat, pack up my bag and get to the train station for a 6am train. The train was way more confortable than i thought it would be. I actually met a pretty cool professor from Ft. Lauderdale. She and her hubbie run tours for pharamacology students living doing medicinal studies in the amazon. very interesting stuff. I arrived at Machu Picchu at about 9am and was just struck dumb by the views. It is completely unreal that people built this place with their hands. The pictures speak for themselves. I will be heading back tomorrow to tour the ruins some more and just relax and take ... read more

so, my mama has addressed my lack of punctuation and capitalization in my entries and scolded the teacher for setting a poor example. the cool reply is i´m a member of the texting generation we don´t need no stinkin capitals or punctuations. the real answer is the keyboards here are different and it is a super pain in the butt to capitalize things and the punctuations are all in different places. so, periods and commas are all you get.... read more

so, started 2day early with a trip back to the airport. the hostal i stayed at in lima was fantastic and arranged for my transport getting me a good deal on the taxi. i had booked a room in a girls dorm with shared back but i was the only person in that dorm so i had the place all to myself. met a couple other girls from canada that were having traveling woes. all in all, the transport, accomodation and breakfast cost me less than 20 dollars. no too shabby. this am, i had a bit of a scare, hence the title of this entry. tried to use my atm at a machine in the airport and it said that my bank didn´t recognize my number. what does that mean! yikes! stayed calm and didn´t ... read more

So, i did catch my plane on june 15th, which is actually a sunday. i, unfortuantely, had been thinking that the 15th was a monday and did not realize i was mistaken until late friday afternoon. talk about a rush trying to get everything packed and ready before leaving. i bought some new sneakers but when i took them out of the box, the lady at the store had put the wrong sneakers in the bag. that was late saturday so there was no time to exchange. they´re actually pretty great sneakers so it probably worked out well. my 1st flight when from tampa to ft. lauderdale where i had a 5 and a half hour layover before my flight to lima. i kept trying to decide if i should stick it out in the airport ... read more

So, what do I do to prepare for this trip??? 1. Buy a camera - yes, shockingly, I do not own a camera. Never had the need. Don't actually like pictures. But, I truly can't imagine NOT having pictures of the city of Machu Picchu. 2. Get a yellow fever vaccination shot. Must have one before they'll let you go into the Amazon. Which leads to the question...Where do you get one? Well, I've spoken with 4 Dr's offices & none of them have yellow fever vaccines. Finally the last one told me that I can get one at the health department. 3. Pack - yikes...I'm gonna push that one down to #20 4. Buy a head lamp. Yes, a head lamp...you know one of those lights that you strap to your head. Gonna need it ... read more
