16 October 2018 Today we started the serious driving to take us home and travelled 450k mainly on motorways. Firstly northwards along attractive mountainous roads with the trees starting to show their autumn colours, then west along the boring plains of northern Italy, round Milan and finally north again back in the mountains to one of the Italian lakes, Lago Maggiore. We stayed in an excellent lakeside campsite in the village of Solcio on the western shore.... read more

15 October 2018 We drove 100k north, the final section along the western edge of the mountainous Parco Del Monte Cucco to the village of Scheggia where we had planned to spend the night. However, we didn’t fancy either the pace or the facilities so we went a further 10k to the town of Gubbio where 10 years ago we had witnessed the exciting youths’ version of the Corsa dei Seri ( blog link ). In the evening we went into the quiet town for a meal.... read more

14 October 2018 The festival activities came thick and fast today. We had to be back in town by 9.00 to see the start of a 37.5k Mountain Bike event with 1500m ascent which followed a route around the steep town streets and into the local hills. There were hundreds of competitors, both serious racers and fun bikers. Going on at the same time was an archery competition in the grounds of a 16th century villa. All the competitors were dressed in medieval clothes and moved around a series of different targets. The Palio dei Terzieri, the main event of the weekend, took place in the afternoon and we managed to get some tickets to sit amongst the locals and see the excitement. The Palio remembers the tenacity of the young men of Trevi who rebuilt ... read more

13 October 2018 We went back up the escalators for another stroll around Spoleto and had a go on the series of six moving underground pavements. Then we drove just outside town to visit the 13th century Chiesa di San Petro which was being refurbished during our last visit. After lunch we went north 20k to the hill top town of Trevi which had impressed us as we drove past it the previous day. The beautiful 5k drive through olive tree groves up to the camperstop gave us amazing but different views of the town as we navigated each hairpin. Wendy was not feeling well when we arrived, so I went into the historic centre and discovered that a weekend festival of various competitions was due to start later. The evening’s entertainment was a drum ... read more

12 October 2018 In 2008 we visited the large town of ( blog link ), but as there was a lot of refurbishment going on then, we decided to make another visit. As we were driving onto the dual carriageway out of Spello we got a stunning view of the town so we turned round and photographed it. When we eventually arrived at Spoleto we had some navigational difficulties, firstly finding a supermarket and then the camperstop, mainly because it was market day and one of the access roads was blocked. Since we were last there, the town has invested in a series of escalators and moving pavements to make travelling up the hill on which it is built much easier. Fortunately, the camperstop was located close to the bottom of a flight of six escalators ... read more

11 October 2018 When we were last in Umbria in 2018 we were at the end of an extended Italian trip and couldn’t visit as many of the attractive hill towns as we would have wished. We started to put this right today by driving to the camperstop in Spello. We got there soon after lunch but unfortunately soon afterwards a light rain started. Undeterred, we climbed up through the narrow streets to a view point at the top of the town but due to the weather couldn’t properly see the surrounding countryside. On the way down at one of the bars we thoroughly enjoyed olive oil soaked bruschetta accompanying a glass of the local wine.... read more

Spello is famous for the residents decorating their properties with displays of summer flowers. They were past their best, but this shows what it must have been like

09 October 2018 Perugia, the capital of Umbria, is only about 40k east of Passignano and linked by a regular train service which we used today. The historic centre is 1.5k uphill from the railway station and the two are linked by a sort of cross between a lift and tram called the Mini Metro which we also utilised. At the centre of Perugia is busy Piazza IV November with 14th century Palazzo dei Proiri to one side, 16th century Cattederale di San Lorenzo on the other, 13th century Fontana Maggiori in the middle and the wide pedestrianised Corsa Vannucci running away from it. We saw them all. Prior to its medieval past Perugia was founded by the Etruscans in the 3rd century BC and we visited a huge city gate and an impressive well from ... read more

08 October 2018 Camping Kursall is on Lake Trasimeno, but not all pitches are directly adjacent to the water. The morning after we arrived we asked to be moved to a lakeside pitch if one was available and finished up on a delightful south facing spot on a small promontory, so we could look right along the lake. This morning we awoke at 7.30, opened the blinds and were faced with the breath-taking view of the blazing sun rising shining through a mist which lay over the distant ridges and being reflected on the lake. The evening, easily seen from our pitch, was equally impressive. Two bands of cloud lay over the western hills and the sun effectively set three times as it passed through them turning the clouds around the whole perimeter of the lake ... read more

07 October 2018 Lake Trasimeno is surrounded by hills, at 128 sq km it is the fourth largest in Italy and has three islands, one of which, Isola Maggiore, is inhabited. We walked into Passignano and as we went past the town pier, a ferry to Isola Maggiore was about to leave. So we boarded it and had a very pleasant couple of hours visiting the island which is reputed to be a favourite of St Francis. When back to the mainland, we had a climb up to Passignano’s old town and finished the day with an excellent meal at the campsite’s restaurant.... read more
