Perugia, the capital of Umbria, is only about 40k east of Passignano and linked by a regular train service which we used today. The historic centre is 1.5k uphill from the railway station and the two are linked by a sort of cross between a lift and tram called the Mini Metro which we also utilised.
At the centre of Perugia is busy Piazza IV November with 14
th century Palazzo dei Proiri to one side, 16
th century Cattederale di San Lorenzo on the other, 13
th century Fontana Maggiori in the middle and the wide pedestrianised Corsa Vannucci running away from it. We saw them all. Prior to its medieval past Perugia was founded by the Etruscans in the 3
rd century BC and we visited a huge city gate and an impressive well from that period. A lovely lunch of Umbrian food sitting amongst the locals at a restaurant recommended by the campsite was another highlight of the day.
