06 October 2018 Montepulciano is well known for producing Vino Nobile wine and is built on a sloping ridge. In dull, cold and showery weather we left the camperstop to visit the town. Fortunately, there turned out to be two lifts which deposited us on the ridge and then, on the advice of the tourist office, we used a little orange shuttle bus which took us up the steep narrow streets to Piazza Grande the top of the town. A climb up the tower of Palazzo Comunale didn’t bring us the expected views due to the weather so we warmed up with a pasta lunch, walked back down the sloping streets and enjoyed ourselves getting lost in one of the underground passages where the wine is stored in huge barrels. We then drove 30k across ... read more

05 October 2018 The camperstops we use during our travels are not campsites. They are sites developed by local communities or private organisations for motorhomes or campervans to stay overnight. They are sometimes dedicated areas and on other occasions sections of carparks. Facilities to empty waste water, take on fresh water and dispose of rubbish are usually, but not always, provided. They are often free, but sometimes a charge is made. They are listed in dedicated guide books, an excellent one we use is Camperstop Europe, in English, but published by a Dutch organisation. For us they have one big bonus, they take us to places we might not have visited which turn out to be far more attractive than we had anticipated. Such was the case today, we chose to stay at the free Massa ... read more

04 October 2018 We left Scaglieri, dove into Portoferraio, the main port and capital of the island, booked our tickets for an afternoon ferry and then enjoyed a very pleasant and varied walk around the sights of the old town. We went around the harbour, climbed the stepped Via Garibaldi to Villa del Mulini where Napoleon lived when he was exiled to Elba in 1814 and finished with a wonderful exploration of the ramparts, tunnels and steps of Fort Falcone which took us back down to water level. After a delicious fish lunch at Osteria Libertaria, we caught the boat back to Piombino on the mainland and drove 50k inland to a camperstop at the hill town of Massa Marittima.... read more

03 October 2018 For our last full day on the island we explored the two peninsulas in the east of Elba. The winding coastal and mountain driving was always challenging, particularly when we found ourselves on a gravel road. But the stunning views from high above the sea made it worthwhile. A swim in the bay below our campsite was an excellent end to the day.... read more

This delightful view was a prefect picnic site. The beach at the bottom of the winding road was the only one we saw in Elba that wasn’t commercialised

02 October 2018 Today we took an enjoyable coastal walk from Scaglieri where we are staying to the next resort, Procchio. The route went along the local beaches, paths through woods which stretched down to the cliffs and across a couple of delightful inlets. We were able to enjoy the waves left over from yesterday’s wind crashing on the shore. Unfortunately, a low level path back to Scaglieri we would have liked to have used was closed due to the rough sea.... read more

01 October 2018 October has arrived! Elba is 28k long and 19k wide but has a wildly indented coastline 147k long. Today we took a ride up the ancient basket cable way to the summit of the highest point, Monte Capanne (1081). We scrambled up to the summit and then Wendy rode down while I walked. We then drove along the exciting road around the wild western coast which looked its best in the late afternoon sun.... read more

30 September 2018 In continued beautiful sunny weather, the morning was used for catching up on our chores. The afternoon was spent having a swim at the local sandy beach and then a short walk round to the next cove. We are halfway through our time on this trip. It’s come quickly but we have achieved a fair amount.... read more

29 September 2018 We toured Sardinia and Corsica in 2011 ( blog link ) and passed by the island of Elba where Napoleon was exiled. On this trip we decided to visit Elba. We drove the 120k southwards to the port of Piombino where we caught the ferry for the hour long crossing to Portoferraio on the island. For our stay on Elba we have chosen the terraced campsite in the small village of Scaglieri on the north coast.... read more

28 September 2018 In 2004, during a camping holiday in Tuscany, we cycled along the top of Lucca’s 16th and 17th Century encircling Renaissance walls. Today we had an enjoyable walk around the 4.2k circuit. This was followed by a visit to the very attractive Romanesque cathedral; a pizza lunch; climbs up the cathedral’s bell tower and the Guinigi Tower which surprisingly has trees growing at the top; a look at oval Piazza Anfiteatro built on the site of a Roman amphitheatre; and a visit to the 17th century Palazzo Pfanner and its baroque-styled garden. After a rest back the van, we went back into town for an Italian meal at a very lively backstreet restaurant. An excellent day was brought to a great close by the music of a s... read more

27 September 2018 We woke up to find single digit temperatures so for the fist time put on the heating in the van! After some early morning shopping in several of Torriglier’s very friendly and helpful establishments, we set off on the 185k journey to the walled town of Lucca. The drive was not without its difficulties! Coming out of Torrigler, I missed a turning and the satnav led me along a narrow and tortuous 30k mountain road which took well over an hour to complete. On this trip we are trying to use motorways as little as possible, but today the last 70k was almost entirely in built up areas which we crawled through whilst watching the traffic speed by on the nearby autostrada. The only saving grace was seeing the huge blocks of marble ... read more
