We left Scaglieri, dove into Portoferraio, the main port and capital of the island, booked our tickets for an afternoon ferry and then enjoyed a very pleasant and varied walk around the sights of the old town. We went around the harbour, climbed the stepped Via Garibaldi to Villa del Mulini where Napoleon lived when he was exiled to Elba in 1814 and finished with a wonderful exploration of the ramparts, tunnels and steps of Fort Falcone which took us back down to water level.

After a delicious fish lunch at Osteria Libertaria, we caught the boat back to Piombino on the mainland and drove 50k inland to a camperstop at the hill town of Massa Marittima.
