Montepulciano is well known for producing Vino Nobile wine and is built on a sloping ridge. In dull, cold and showery weather we left the camperstop to visit the town. Fortunately, there turned out to be two lifts which deposited us on the ridge and then, on the advice of the tourist office, we used a little orange shuttle bus which took us up the steep narrow streets to Piazza Grande the top of the town. A climb up the tower of Palazzo Comunale didn’t bring us the expected views due to the weather so we warmed up with a pasta lunch, walked back down the sloping streets and enjoyed ourselves getting lost in one of the underground passages where the wine is stored in huge barrels.

We then drove 30k across the border from Tuscany into Umbria and stopped at Camping Kursall which is attached to a hotel on the shore of Lake Trasimino in the outskirts of the town of Passignano.
