Day 1 Our flight from Seoul to Beijing was delayed by 90 minutes, landing us close to rush hour. We found the shuttle buses into the city and without exactly knowing where our hotel was I told them Tiananmen Square as our destination. Just outside the airport the road was completely shut down. 45 minutes later we finally started rolling and ours was the last stop putting us out at the height of rush hour where every taxi was occupied. We waved off several offers of a private car for 50 yuan waiting for a metered cab. The second taxi we flagged down knew where the hotel was, the entire trip including taxi and bus was 50 yuan (around $7). What a deal! I was already liking China except for the traffic. It was late after ... read more

We had three full days in Seoul. I didn't really scour websites for an itinerary so I let dad pick the sites. We spent our first morning getting our ID's that let us off an on Post without having to check in every time making things much more flexible on coming and going. After picking up a couple subway cards we headed out for some site seeing. I was wanting to try some authentic Bibimbap (Korean wellness food) and the little hole in the wall we stopped at had some. I don't have much of a refined palette so I couldn't tell that much difference than what I've had at home, very tasty. Kelly had something fried, I thought mine was better. After waiting an hour for an English tour guide we visited Changdeok Palace, one ... read more

Arrival at Inchon airport around 9:45p, after immigrations we left with my Dad who came to pick us up around 11p straight to the Army Post. Dad was lucky enough to get us a 2nd bed so both of us would have a bed that night. Unknown to us a Typhoon had just come through the day before killing a few people and dropping many large trees on post which in turn caused issues with getting a bed delivered but dad came through and we had a place to sleep. In the morning we discovered a large tree which had fallen onto the roof of our bedroom which was removed before we departed for China.... read more

We were one of the first off the ship again using self-disembarkation since we travel with only one piece of luggage apiece. We decided to splurge and get a cab if we could to avoid the long walk to the bus, metro, switch, walk to hotel so after ignoring the first few taxi's starting at €30 we settled for the €15 ride. The weather had changed since we left two week prior, a little cooler. We took the metro up the the National Archaeological Museum of Athens, it had just opened and crowds were non-existent and as a plus they allowed photography which was nice. It was impossible to read all the descriptions of every piece - I love history but that can put me to sleep - I would focus on the context signs where ... read more

Though I wished we could have spent a lot more time in Israel I was looking forward to seeing the Pyramids in Egypt. All six of us were off the boat before the buses left and had to walk out of the port over a bridge where the security detail - six or more trucks full of soldiers carrying machine guns) - to escort the tour buses to Cairo. Our passports were checked again as we left to meet our replacement tour guide Rasha and van driver (forget his name) and we left without any escort detail. Rasha does not drive and had no desire to, I see why, the lines painted on the roads were possibly for decoration as none of the drivers seem to heed them in any way: organized chaos. It was a ... read more

Middle East » Israel » Jerusalem District » Jerusalem October 13th 2009

We arrived early in the morning in the commercial Port city of Asdod, Israel. The Israeli's customs had already boarded the ship the day before to do face to face interviews (ours lasted 20 seconds I would guess) with each visitor and give us our visa (they didn't stamp our passport). They double checked our passport again as we left the ship, we were one of the first to disembark to meet our tour guide Gideon in his mini-van that barely fit the six of us. After a few wrong turns in the port area and through security again we were on our way to Jerusalem, about an hour drive to the east. "Welcome to the Land of Milk and Money" -- Gideon. Gideon dropped us off right at the entrance to the Temple Mount with ... read more

Middle East » Turkey » Aegean » Ephesus October 11th 2009

Ephesus, once a Greek port town on the Aegean sea now lies several kilometers inland so our tour started at the port city of Kusadasi (Bird Island). Kusadasi 25 years ago we were told was a small fishing village but with the number of tourist the city is much larger and busier. This was our second of two tours with the group of twenty. After another day at sea our tour guide Levent was originally scheduled to fly and meet us but due to a situation another guide and and his assistant met us for our tour, I can't remember his or her name. We seemed to have arrived before the other boat tours in Ephesus as we started our tour. They have multiple separated areas where tour guides can give an overview of the area ... read more

Middle East » Turkey » Marmara » Istanbul October 9th 2009

Istanbul is big, much bigger than I imagined. I should have figured a city that was once the eastern capital of the Roman Empire, a city that is in both Asia and Europe would be big but the part we toured was only the Old City where everything was surprisingly compact and if we had been on our own would have easily walked to all the places we went. On this trip (and the next, Ephesus) our group joined a group of fourteen for a total of twenty. Once named Constantinople the modern name of Istanbul was given to the city by Atatürk in the 1930's. The large tour buses were packed into the narrow dock just beyond where we got off the ship. We walked outside and beyond the customs to meet our tour guide ... read more
