...should be my new title! I went out with my 3B students after class on Monday night. We went out so I could try makolli- a traditional Korean rice wine that you drink out of a bowl. It looks like milk but tastes nothing like it- not altogether unpleasant though! After noraebang (My Sharona is becoming my signature song!) everyone was petering off home. But it was only 2am! I've been trained at Sandinista, I thought to myself, I don't stop til 5am and then some! So off I toddled into the night looking for mischief... Happened across this group of [View Full Entry]

So not last Saturday but the Saturday beforeI went to the above named parade (I ain't spelling that again!) with two on my students- Jini and Sunny. It was at Yongdoosan park which is really close to ESS, my school. I was as hungover as hell (must stop drinking soju) and the prospect of a parade of people banging drums didn't exactly thrill but when I got there it as loads of fun! Jo-seon-tong-shin-sa was a Korean cultural delegation a long long time ago, when Japan really wanted Korea to deliver some cultural things and technics to Japan. (In the days [View Full Entry]

Taejondae... Asia » South Korea » Busan
So I finally got my camera working! I mentionned that last week Will, Joy and I went to Taejondae. Taejondae is on the coast and is full of cliffs and interesting rocky outcrops that really give it it's beauty. It kind of reminded me of the scenery in Corfu- mountains jutting into the sea scattered with dark green foliage and trees. It was so wonderful to be out of the city- I hadn't seen green for 3 weeks so to be by the sea with fresh air and good company was really the tonic I was looking for. The best thing [View Full Entry]

Quintessentially English.... Asia » South Korea » Busan
Not only am I learning loads about Korean culture but also, from hanging around with English speakers from other countries, I'm also finding out what it is that makes me English. I went umbrella shopping the other day (honestly, Korea has cornered the market in funky umbrellas- they're so cute!). I picked out my umbrella and the guy, casually as you like, went to open it. Inside my head there came an unexpected 'nooooo bad luck!' so loud I thought I might have said it. I mean come on, I don't really believe opening umbrellas indoors brings bad luck- do I!? .....but at least they still get me there in the end! I really feel like I'm starting to settle in now, the initail anxiety has gone and I'm actually beginning to feel rather at home. Last weekend was really fab, got appropriately leathered on Friday night, lost my wallet and broke my English phone but a good time was still had. Over here they're crazy about 'noraebang' which are like karaoke singing rooms. You go in with your mates, get shown to a room, drink as much as you like and try not to shatter the glass with your ear piercing [View Full Entry]

Trouble sleeping..... Asia » South Korea » Busan
So far this has been a really topsy turvy week, when it's been low it's been scraping the bottom of the barrel of low and when it's been high I could almost imagine I was a whole foot taller (well almost!). I think the trouble is the lack of sleep. I like sleeping; me and sleeping get on well. In the UK 8 hours sleep a night was normal and kept me my happy jovial little self- here I'm lucky if I scrape 5 hours and it's always broken. The hours of this job are so different to what I'm used [View Full Entry]

Bloggity blog blog Asia » South Korea » Busan
So I decided I'd keep a blog. After much ummming and ahhhing I thought it would be a good way to let you know all my goings on, emailing was getting pretty repetitive! I'll still be gracing your inboxes with emails though probably of a more personal nature (ooo er!). This weekend just gone I went for lunch with one of my students for a Korean bbq. I can't tell you how good this stuff is! They bring raw seasoned meat to your table and you cook it over hot coals inlaid into the table. I ate so much I nearly [View Full Entry]
