South America » Peru » Cusco » Ollantaytambo July 20th 2010

Day 1--Journey to Huchuy Cosqo: We woke up at 6am to meet Jonathan in front of our hostel at 6:30. After meeting him, we drove to Ollantaytambo to pick up the family of 3: Bob, Trudy, and Zack, who would be joining us on the trek to Huchuy Cosqo. After this we drove another hour and a half to Patabamba where we began the trek. Patabamba was a small town with basic homes made of mud bricks--one of the porters let me use his bathroom in town, which ended up just being a hole in the ground with 2 foot prints to place your feet--hadn´t done that one in a while... The views of the Andes were instantly breathtaking and absolutely indescribable. The path was so remote that it wasn´t even a path at times. Every ... read more

South America » Peru » Cusco » Cusco July 19th 2010

We arrived in Cuzo on Wednesday the 14th in the afternoon after an 18 hour bus ride from Ica, and loaded up on mate de coca. Both Sim and I didn´t sleep very well on the bus because the road was so curvy and the full camas were a bit smaller than our first 1st class bus ride. However, after our coca tea, we ventured out into the city in search of lunch...We found a place near our hostel when Sim tried sopa criolla (noodles and egg) and ajì de gallina, which is a nice chicken dish. I wanted to try ajì de gallina, but not get the same thing as Sim so I got the vegetable soup and pollo de curry--bad decision to order non-peruvian food at a peruvian place. However, with food in our ... read more

South America » Peru » Ica » Huacachina July 14th 2010

We arrived into Ica at around midnight on Monday night... way later than we wanted and we were exhausted from the bus ride, which ended up being a lot longer than anticipated. Ica is famous for being the capital of the Peruvian wine region and an important industrial center. About 5km from Ica is a small desert town called Huacachina, which is famous for its relaxed atmosphere and sandboarding. After some groggy decision making we decided to go straight to Huacachina because the hostels there are more backpacker friendly (ie cheap). Huacachina is tiny! Basically a couple buildings, restaurants, and hostels around a small lake (called the oasis). It is so small that most buildings do not have an address so it was a bit hard to find the hostel we wanted to stay in. In ... read more

South America » Peru » Lima » Lima » Miraflores July 11th 2010

So I apologize now for my delayed updates...adventuring has impeded my blogging opportunities. In order to catch up I am quoting some of Sim´s blog so you know what we did--the pictures really speak for themselves... We arrived in Lima at around noon on Saturday the 10th. We tried to call our couch surfing host but didn´t have much success (realized later that we wrote the number down wrong). We decided to wait in the lounge and watched some of the world cup game. In the end, we decided to go to a hostel because we were frustrated with waiting and wanted to be independent. We hopped in a taxi and checked into the Friends House hostel in Miraflores (the nicest neighborhood in Lima). We walked around Miraflores for the afternoon. It is a really nice ... read more

South America » Peru » Piura » Máncora July 9th 2010

We arrived in Mancora on morning of the 6th (Tues) and now that we're at the beach, I feel like we're on a vacation from our vacation. The Loki hostel is like a resort right next to the beach with a pool, bar, ping pong table, and loads of daily activities for less than $9 a night! I've definitely decided that I want to open a hostel somewhere abroad when I retire...I've been keeping tabs on what is good and what is bad. Since traveling is one of my biggest passions, it's pretty much perfect for me hehe Mancora is gorgeous and the people are super friendly, however it is more touristy that the cities we've been to with more gringos, especially at the Loki... The highlights: We watched the 2 semifinal soccer matches with everyone ... read more

South America » Ecuador » South » Cuenca July 7th 2010

We are definitely speeding through Ecuador...one week is definitely not enough but after our bad experiences we just need to get out of here... So we got to Cuenca on Sunday the 4th of July and met Brigette and Elisa in the bus terminal with perfect timing. Then I gave Jaime a call and he came to get us since his place is about 40 minutes out of the city center. I was a bit nervous initially to couchsurf for the first time, but since we were a group of 4 and Brigette and Elisa are avid couchsurfers, I was put at ease. The ride to his pueblo was quite a ride out of town, but I absolutely loved it after being in so many cities. I thought his place was great because the cabana was ... read more

South America » Ecuador » Centre » Baños July 5th 2010

We arrived in Baños Friday night with Brigette and Elisa and got some dinner at a little pizzeria. Little did I know that the personlized pizza and salad doused in too much dressing was going to give me Montezuma´s revenge...We went to the thermal baths at other side of town and they packed! We were expecting calm natural pools of hot springs, but just got a building next to a huge waterfall with different pools of varied temperatures and kids running around all over the place. However, that night (July 3rd) was the town´s celebration to its Holy Water Saint and there were loads of fireworks going off next to us while we were it the baths, which was really cool. That was our 4th of July celebration, just one night early... The next day I ... read more

South America » Ecuador » North » Quito July 4th 2010

When we arrived in Quito´s north terminal at like 6pm, Sim wanted to take a taxi to the hostel but they were asking for $10! I wanted to take public transport and luckily Brigetter and Elisa were taking the trolleys, so I guess that made Sim more comfortable even though we were going in different directions than them because they were couchsurfing with someone in Quito. So in the end we only paid 25 cents on a really impressive trolley system. Sim hauled ass when we got off at our stop at Plaza Santo Domingo because it was dark at that point and everyone tells us not to walk at night. Nonetheless, we made it Hostel Residencia Sucre next to Plaza San Francisco safely in like 5 minutes. When we got into the hostel we found ... read more

South America » Ecuador » North » Otavalo June 30th 2010

So we finally made it out of Colombia after 3 weeks! On the bus we met these two awesome girls; Brigette from Las Vegas & Elisa from Italy and found we were pretty much traveling the same route so after easily crossing the border via bus and walking, we arrived in the cute town of Otavalo in the afternoon. We went to get some lunch at a restaurant called Otavalito and paid $5 for a 4 course meal of sopa de mote, crepe de atun, lomo asado con verduras y papas (grilled beef w veggies and potatoes), and helado de mango...mmm super rico! After filling our bellies with Ecuadorian deliciousess, made camp at a cheap hostel called Takia Makia. We ended up squeezing 4 of us in a 3 bed room, so it was a little ... read more

South America » Colombia » Cali June 30th 2010

So Friday we left Medellin and took another bus to Cali to continue on Mission Good Salsa. The ride was only about 8.5 hours so we arrived in Cali at about 6 am, took a taxi to Kaffee Erde hostal, where we were greeted by an adorable older woman in an empty hostal that looked like a house. She served us coffee, but we were so tired that we went back to sleep. When we woke up we met her daughter, Diana, and they drove us over to Chipichape, which is a huge mall at the end of Avenida Sexta, which is where are the restaurants and nightlife exists. We walked back to get our bearings and stopped to get arepas rellenos for lunch, which is a fried arepa filled with rice, chicken, and egg. Yummy! ... read more
