Last night was a hilarious adventure trying to get to the bus terminal in Cartagena to catch our 11 hour overnight bus to Medellin. I was determined to take a regular bus since we managed to take the bus coming into the center and a taxi was 10 times more expensive. I don´t like taking taxis...I want to travel around the city like the locals travel around the city. So we packed our packs up and walked to where all the local buses were loading people up and began looking for the white Metrocar bus. However, none were passing by and we were running late so we decided to get on another bus that said it was going to the terminal. Of course we were the only two white girls on this crowded rickety school bus ... read more

I had very low expectations for Cartagena because many people told us that the costeños try to rip you off and there isn´t much to do, however, when we arrived Sunday night with a bunch of guys from our last hostel, I was very pleasantly surprised. The city´s colonial architecture and beautiful lighting was so enchanting. I just couldn´t get enough of the 15 ft. wooden doors and the intricately designed balconies and terraces. We ended up staying at Hostel de la Pirata in the historic center with the group of guys we came with for the first night, and Sim was definitely not happy with the place. Needless to say, it was less than comfortable with stiff beds, one bathroom for the entire hostel and 3 huge dogs growling at you from the top of ... read more

Last night I slept like a rock in my hamaca--I think I´ve officially mastered the art of sleeping one for a full night without waking up. After such an epic week to the Lost City and then more trekking through the jungle just to get to our camp site in Parque Tayrona, all I wanted to do was bask in the sun and relax. So this morning we took the 5 minute walk to the beach searching for fruit for breakfast. However, once we got to the beach it was absolutely desolate- the perfect, untouched beach juxtaposed with the lush green of the jungle was pretty much postcard worthy. Walking along the beach we passed a lone donkey just hanging out and then saw a little sign for a Panaderìa (bakery). As we reached the sign ... read more

South America » Colombia » Santa Marta » Ciudad Perdida June 20th 2010

Before I recount my daily journal entries from the past 6 days, I just want to establish the this was the hardest yet most beautiful and rewarding hiking trek I have even been on. I never thought I would actually be caught in the rain in the rainforest, see exotic butterflies with the number 89 perfectly painted on their wings by nature, or meet people who used to work in the coca fields making cocaine. Literally a once in a lifetime experience. So let the trek begin.... Day 1: 50 degree inclines....The journey began this morning at 9 am when we piled our group of 7: Dan & Brianne (Canada), Janica (Miami), George (Switzerland), David (Belgium), Sim and I, into an antique jeep with a broken speedometer. The first 45 minutes were a smooth ride past ... read more

South America » Colombia » Santa Marta June 13th 2010

Prelude: I started writing this entry the day after, but didn´t have time to finish before leaving for Ciudad Perdida so for lack of time, so I appologize for quoting Simonne´s blog for the rest of the night.... Last night we flew out of Bogotà at around 8pm thinking we were going go arrive at the hostel late and crash right away. Little did we know we were going to befriend Pillao Rodriguez, the famous vallenato singer, on the plane to Santa Marta. He seemed nice and invited us to his concert in the Bahìa de Santa Marta square, but we were cautious and declined his offers of a taxi and flagged down our own taxi. ¨He gave us one of his promotional CDs (http://www.pillaorodriguez.com/) and I thought OK maybe he is for real. He again ... read more

South America » Colombia » Bogota June 11th 2010

Oh one week in and where to begin. First of all, let's reflect on the fact that I am not kidnapped and my parents have not received a phone call for ransom. Bogotá is not as dangerous as it used to be. Yes, there are still plenty of muggings that go on and I have already experienced an aggressive beggar that I had to run from, but I haven't felt unsafe at all yet. First impressions: 1) lot's of construction. It seems that Bogota has made the decision to overhaul the entire city and improve everything at once, which will probably be better in the long run, but right now it's a bit chaotic. And since the city is built over a swamp, reconstruction of the roads is going to be incessant. 2) surprisingly clean and ... read more

North America January 17th 2010

So I returned to the States from London the night of the 4th at about 11pm so that I could quickly unpack my winter gear and re-pack my summer gear to go straight back to Newark airport about 6 hours later to catch our flight to San Juan, Puerto Rico at 9am. Insanity. Nonetheless we made it to San Juan safely, packed up the car and made our way to our first destination: Ponce. We only spent one night here, but we got to see La Cruz and the beginning of the Tres Reyes Celebration. We then packed up the car again and headed all the way west to Boqueron, which is where most of the locals go for their vacations. This was nice, but not as nice as I expected it to be. The sand ... read more

Apologies for the extreme tardiness in posting the next couple of entries--once finals started at uni in London and then I was back at Rutgers, there were no spare moments. However, now that I officially have my B.S. degree, I can update you on the past 6 months to prep you for my next adventure to South America this summer! ... read more
