After leaving Knysna we headed to Wilderness. This was our last beach stop before heading to Cape Town and the last chance for sun as overcast weather was forecast for Cape Town. The Beach was again amazing - stunning white sand with massive waves but the strong current made swimming dangerous, plus there were plenty of blue bottles so I was hesitant as vivid memories of being stung as a child are permanently etched in my memory. But we only live once and Trish and I went for a swim on Thursday morning before we left for Cape Town and we have both survived, unscathed, to tell the tale. The drive to Cape Town brought us closer to the cloudy weather. It was a bit of a shock to go from hot sunny days to overcast ... read more

After two short and painless flights I arrived in Port Elizabeth and was met by Trish, Charet and Sammy. Sammy is a delightful 3 year old who ran across the airport and gave me the biggest hug. I thought this was very cool considering the last time I saw him was over two years ago and he couldn't even walk or talk. After getting all my luggage we hit the road for Jeffreys Bay. Jeffreys Bay is a surfing hot spot around July when it hosts a huge Billabong surfing competition. The population explodes for the month and then again in December for annual summer vacations. It is beautiful. Golden beaches, great waves and alot of sun...Perfect combo! The plan for South Africa was to stay with Sam and Charet for a few days then meet ... read more

Zim or Zam?

After doing a bit of research I decided that I wanted to see the Falls from both the Zim and Zam side so I could get both perspectives. I really glad I did because they are sooooo different. I decided on Zam first because there has been alot of rain since I got here. Funny that? It happens alot to me : ) The extra rain has meant a larger volume of water flowing making for a very impressive sight. Viewing from the Zam side meant walking through the Zim and Zam border controls and across the Vic Falls Bridge, a journey that takes about 30 mins. There are heaps of taxis if you're feeling lazy. Whilst seeing the Falls I meet my first friend, Jody, who is an AIDS counsellor volunteer from Canada. It was ... read more

As all good things must come to an end so did my stay in Moshi. On the 20th I said good bye to my new friends and bordered a bus with Catherine destined for Nairobi. Now I have learnt not to stress about time so much anymore, something that my lecturers will probably not appreciate once uni starts back. But to give you an idea of my journey.... The bus was due to arrive at 10:30am. It arrived just after 11am and it took 20 mins to then leave. But we only got as far as the town centre. Where we sat until midday. Well we were supposed to be there until midday but again it was about 20 past when we left. We arrived in Arusha just after 2pm where we had to change buses. ... read more

Day 1 - We headed off from our hotel in Moshi early and arrived at the Marangu gate, which happens to be higher than Mt. Kosciuszko in Australia. After all signing in we set off into the rain forrest towards the Mandara huts (2700m) where would spend our first night. The rain forrest was beautiful and we got to see some monkeys in the evening when we arrived - very cool. We went on a short walk to the crater of a smaller volcano which is supposed to help with acclimitisation. I just liked the view : ) Day 2 - After an interesting nights sleep - the monkeys tend to be rather vocal at night - we were fed and started on the way to Horombo (3720m). The change in the vegetation was amazing. The ... read more

I've managed to find an interent cafe to upload some pictures. I may have went a little overboard but I hope you enjoy them. Make sure to check the previous blog as I have added more pics there too. Our homestay was wonderful as I already mentioned. We were made to feel so welcome into Sara's home. She insisted that we called her Mama. She even gave Ashleigh and I PJs to wear to bed. Ben and Ryan were staying at her sisters place but we all ate dinner and breakfast together. Teaching the next day was absolute chaos. Naomi and I had planned a lesson for 1 hour for a year 3 or 4 class that we were going to repeat for 3 different class. It turned out that we had one class of 65 ... read more

A short flight from London landed me in Zurich airport where I was due to get a connecting flight to Nairobi. Now with true Swiss efficiency I was unable to board the plane when I arrived at the gate because they had found "something" on the x-ray they took of my bag. Now I was baffled. I'd flown through airports in Australia, America and England but it was only now I was having any trouble. It turned out to be a packed of sparklers. You know the kind that you light on birthdays and other celebrations. So after a little talk about what is allowed to be carried, I was allowed to board the plane. Nairobi airport was interesting. So different to any other airport that I've been to. The passport control man ask me how ... read more

After having lived in London for almost 4 years, there wasn't alot of sightseeing that I needed to do. So during my stay with Rach, we did the other type of sight-seeing....or as some would say...the only type of sight-seeing! But first I had to buy a camera. I did a bit more research about cameras on the internet including a price comparison between various online places in Oz and the UK so when it came time to hand over my credit card I felt slightly better about making an informed purchase. I am now camera equipped once more with a better camera - I just have to keep telling myself that!! Plus we haggled the guy so I got a camera, spare battery, 2GB memory card and case for a decent price in the end. ... read more

Happy New Year!!! Side-trip destination: Edinburgh, Scotland Just because it's close and just because I could, I got a flight to Edinburgh to spend New Years Eve. I figured why not! Unfortunately due to terrible weather (40 mile/hour winds causing rain to fall horizontally) the Hogmanay celebrations including fireworks were cancelled. But I didn't mind because Alex had organised to go to his friend John's place, so we hung out there. Amazingly the wind died down for the hour around midnight allowing fireworks to be set off, though only for a few minutes - nothing like the display we saw had happened in Sydney. So with bubbles, strawberries, fireworks and good company, 2007 has begun. Meanwhile back in London, camera shopping is on the agenda. Now this is where it's really difficult not to convert back ... read more

Unfortunately I will not be able to post any photo's from LA because I have somehow managed to misplace my camera. I was really hoping I'd left in it Marcus' car but alas, I did not. So in the mindset of a true optimist, if it's ever a good time to lose a camera it's at the start of the holiday rather than the end and lose all your photo's and what better time of year than when the after Christmas sales are on : ) Second stop: London It is so strange to be back in London. Although it's just over 2 years since I was last here, it seriously feels like it was just a couple of months ago. The first thing that I really noticed was how expensive things are. My 1-6 zone ... read more
